They are the French equivalent of the Oscars and Hollywood royalty was in Paris on Friday as Sean Penn collected an honorary prize at the 40th annual César awards. “Timbuktu” was the big winner, scooping seven gongs including Best Film and Best Director for Abderrahmane Sissako. Also nominated for an Oscar, Sissako’s picture dramatises the takeover of the Malian city of the same name in 2012 by a rebel group enforcing strict Islamic law. The Best Actress winner was Adèle Haenel, 26, for her role as a rebellious and impulsive young woman in the atypical romantic comedy “Les Combattants” or “Love at First Fight”. The Best Actor award was announced by Juliette Binoche and Kristen Stewart, 24, who went home with a Best Supporting Actress prize for “Sils Maria”, the first American actress ever to win a César. Best Actor was Pierre Niney, 25, who brings Yves Saint Laurent to the screen in “Yves Saint Laurent” – one of two nominated films about the late fashion designer. And a former TV talent show star, 18-year-old Louane Emera, was named best female newcomer for her role in the box office favourite “The Belier Family”, playing a rural teenager whose brother and parents are deaf but who hopes to conquer Paris with her singing voice. The world’s oldest surviving film festival is getting underway in Venice – the 72nd edition of what’s locally called La Mostra brings with it 11 days of red carpets, parties and premiers … Any unfavourable comparisons with its younger rival the Toronto International Film Festival which opens next week are firmly dismissed by Venice’s Artistic Director Alberto Barbera: “I’m doing a festival which is completely different from Toronto. They have 300 feature films, we have no more than 55 feature films so it is a different type of a festival. We do a very limited selection of films. I prefer quality instead of quantity.” As a prelude there were two real gems screened – Orson Welles’ Othello and what was believed lost, his Merchant of Venice. But the competition proper of 21 films vying for the golden Lion opens with Everest – a high altitude real life thriller. Highlights “Everest” starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Keira Knightley. “The Danish Girl” starring Oscar winner, Eddie Redmayne. “Equals” starring Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult. A ruined castle has won this year’s prestigious UK Stirling Prize following a stunning restoration. The annual British prize for excellence in architecture is organized and awarded by the Royal Institute of British Architects. And this year’s award goes to the Astley Castle which is located in Warwickshire. The building was derelict and neglected since it had been severely damaged by fire nearly 35 years ago. But architects renovated it into a groundbreaking modern holiday home, starting five years ago. The castle is now rich with modern elements inside, including furniture and utensils. Less

The latest revelation about the ever-widening US spying scandal: America's National Security Agency has stored the personal electronic data of British citizens under a secret deal with London. Files leaked by Edward Snowden and published by British media show UK officials agreed in 2007 that the NSA could retain and analyze Britons' phone, internet and email records. The leaks are the latest revelations of U-S spying on friendly countries. Snowden's leaks have caused anger around the world, with allegations that the NSA spied on foreign leaders -- including German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Less

You never know what you might find in waterways. In Britain, a man walking his dog in the County of Lincolnshire found loads of cold wet cash floating in a river. UK authorities fished the money out and gathered it up. When they counted it, it was about 100 thousand dollars. They are now trying to solve the great mystery about the owner and how the cash ended up in the water. Police say if you’re thinking of claiming it, you'd better show them a solid evidence that it is yours. Of course, if the man had decided to keep the cash for himself, that could have some significant drawbacks as well. Less

Around 1,000 cyclists staged a die-in in front of Transport for London's Blackfriars headquarters, Friday. The action was a demonstration against the lack of security for cyclists on the roads of the UK's capital. The protest blocked Blackfriars road in rush hour to demand that the Mayor's office respond to the call for safer streets. Protesters also blocked some roads outside the Transport for London's offices in Southwark. London's cyclists request more cycling infrastructure, at least two formal Board Members on the local body and "Amsterdam levels of money" spent on London's cycling safety. Donnacha Mccarthy, an activist of Stop the Killing of Cyclists organisation stated the demand for "real action from the London Mayor" and for Boris Johnson to "start spending real money on cyclists safety". The budget for cycling in London is currently £100 million (€121 million/$164 million), activists would like to see this increase to £600 (€723 million/$982 million) Six people have died whilst riding their bikes in November and a total of 14 over the year of 2013. Making this year more deadly than the last, where 13 cyclists died and several were injured in 2012. Two of the recent fatalities were killed on the cycle superhighways, which are advertised as safer and faster lanes. Less

Penguins in the Sea Life Sanctuary north of Scarborough were given anti-depressant medication on Friday to help them through the miserable British weather. A staff member at the centre inserted the drugs into fish, before directly feeding them to the penguins. The staff member said the penguins have not been enjoying the "really bad weather we've been having," pointing out the penguins "are normally from Chile and Peru" where they have "two different seasons, compared to us having four." He said the penguins have a "lot more to contend with here as we tend to have a lot more bad weather, especially with autumn and winter." It is believed the storms that have rocked the UK over recent months have made the penguins stressed, depressed and as a consequence they have developed stomach problems caused by an imbalance in internal bacteria. Here at Guavo HQ we love technology... and it doesn't get better than a robot story to get us excited! Now meet the CUBESTORMER 3 robot which very impressively uses ARM-powered processor technology to be able to solve a Rubik's Cube in the fastest time known to mankind. This weekend at the Big Bang Fair in Birmingham, the UK's biggest single celebration of science & engineering for young people robot history was made. The 3rd model of the CUBESTORMER kicked Rubik's Cube ass and managed to achieve an incredible solving time of 3.253 SECONDS... It is now officially the fastest-ever time set by a robot for the completion of a Rubik's cube and the result of 18 months of effort by co-inventors David Gilday and Mike Dobson who worked on the project in their spare time. David Gilday is a principle engineer at ARM, the world's leading processor design company based in Cambridge, and co-inventor Mike Dobson, a security systems engineer for Securi-Plex. He said: "We knew CUBESTORMER 3 had the potential to beat the existing record but with the robot perfoming physical operations quicker than the human eye can see there's always an element of risk," The new robot uses an ARM-powered Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone to act as the brain of the robot and analyse the cube and instruct four robotic hands to do the hard work physical manipulation. The robot device is also built with colourful Lego bricks from the toy company's Technic range which gives it a kind of friendlier appearance, as opposed to something scary from one of the Terminator movie franchises in Hollywood. The world record was officially adjudicated and verified on the day at the NEC in Birmingham by Craig Glenday, Editor-in-chief of the annual Guinness World Records Book. UK nationals fighting in Syria have called on Muslim Britons to join the ongoing conflict in the Arab country. In a video released by the terrorist group the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, a masked man speaking with a London accent encourages QUOTE his brothers and sisters to rush to Syria to fight the holy war. Another British national has also addressed UK Muslims-- urging them to ignore the government's travel warnings and join the growing ranks of foreign militants in Syria. Western intelligence agencies have warned that they pose a potential security threat when they return home. Hundreds of Britons are thought to be fighting in Syria along with militants from other European countries. Less

Eleven-year-old Russian camel Jeffrey spent part of his Friday in the Yorkshire town of Sutton-on-the-Forest much as he does many days: drinking beer with co-owner Simon Grant. Jeffrey, who was bought as a birthday present by Simon and Elizabeth Grant for their teenage son Tom seven years ago, isn't picky about the brand of beer that his owner adds to his selection of carrots. Grant says that for every pint Jeffrey has, he drinks one with him. Jeffrey, who originally came from Holland, is quite friendly with people, according to Grant. He adds that Jeffrey may be the UK's only true pet camel, as others are kept at zoos and tourist attractions. Police deployed horses and dogs to keep the rival groups apart however, the two groups clashed near the city's train station as nationalists and anti-fascists taunted each other from opposite sides of the street. A number of arrests were made on both sides. The March for England has taken place for the last six years in what organisers say is a celebration of national pride. CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (AP) — NASCAR driver Tony Stewart struck and killed a driver who was walking on a dirt track during a race in upstate New York, authorities said early Sunday. A video of the crash at Canandaigua Motorsports Park showed driver Kevin Ward Jr. stepping toward Stewart's car before being hit and hurtled 50 feet. The Ontario County Sheriff's Department would not identify the driver but said he was pronounced dead Saturday night at a hospital in Canandaigua. Sheriff Philip Povero said his office is not investigating the incident as a criminal matter. He said Stewart, 42, was "'fully cooperative" while being questioned and released. Calls to Stewart's representatives were not immediately returned. The three-time NASCAR champion is scheduled to race in NASCAR's event Sunday at Watkins Glen. Michael Messerly, a fan who witnessed the crash, said it appeared Stewart hit the driver as he was walking on the dimly lit track after they had collided on the previous lap. View gallery This image provided by Logan Messerly shows ambulances on the scene at Canandaigua Motorsports Park …He said the driver was wearing a dark racing suit as Stewart's car passed him. "I didn't see (the other driver) anymore," he said. "It just seemed like he was suddenly gone." Messerly said the crash appeared to be the result of "a number of bad decisions" and not "any intent on Tony Stewart's part." "Auto racing is a dangerous sport," he said. "I think it was just an unfortunate set of circumstances that created a tragic situation." The track, about 30 miles southeast of Rochester, canceled the remainder of the race within five minutes and later posted a message on its Facebook page encouraging fans to "pray for the entire racing community of fans, drivers, and families." The UK government is reportedly considering plans to temporarily prevent British-born ISIL militants from returning to the country. However, such UK nationals would still be allowed to keep their British citizenship. Prime Minister David Cameron is expected to lay out his plans to counter the rising threat of the Takfiri terrorists wreaking havoc in Syria and Iraq. The measures would also make it easier for law enforcement officials to seize the passports of would-be militants traveling abroad. There are at least five hundred Britons believed to have gone to fight in Syria. Meanwhile, a US lawmaker reveals that several hundred Americans are known to have links with ISIL militants. Mike Rogers says these US citizens have at least once traveled, participated and trained with the terrorists. Less

British Prime Minister David Cameron says the war against the ISIL militants may take years. Cameron made the comments during a debate at the House of Commons on whether the UK should join the US-led coalition against the ISIL in Iraq. Cameron urged British lawmakers to approve joining the fight. The British premier has said that the ISIL is posing a direct threat to Britain’s national interests and people because it has killed one Briton so far. Cameron, however, insisted that there will be no British troops on the ground and that the Iraqi and Kurdish forces will take the responsibility.
