Last summer, while out doing karaoke (and singing Huey of course) I started thinking how great it would be to visit all the cities listed in the song. Why those places? What connected them to Huey Lewis? What rock & roll magic could be found in those disparate places?nnSo I set out on a journey to make a music video where I’d travel to all 14 cities listed in the song, not only as a tribute to Huey Lewis but to prove that the heart of rock & roll is indeed still alive and beating. See more architecture and design movies at dezeen.com/moviesnnSwiss artist Felice Varini has painted curved strips onto buildings and streets in a Belgian city to create a picture of overlapping rings when viewed from one vantage point.nnFelice Varini's Trois Ellipses Ouvertes en Désordre artwork covers several urban blocks in Hasselt's historic city centre.nnSections of white paint are located across rooftops, walls and road surfaces, seemingly random when seen from the streets.nnThe full effect only becomes clear when looked down upon from the rooftop lounge of the Radisson Blu Hotel, where the image of three ellipses is revealed.nn"The painted form achieves its coherence when the viewer stands at the vantage point," said Varini. "When he moves out of it, the work meets with space generating infinite vantage points on the form.nn"It is not therefore through this original vantage point that I see the work achieved; it takes place in the set of vantage points the viewer can have on it," added the artist.nnThe patterns fall across 99 buildings including the city's cathedral, as well as shops and houses lining the streets of Maastrichterstraat, Hemelrijk and Fruitmarkt.nnTo create the artwork, lights were shone from the hotel onto the city and the layout of the lines was projected as shadows.nnPainters used cherry pickers to reach the roofs and high sections of wall, filling in the outlines drawn in yellow with white paint over a 20-day period.nn"My field of action is architectural space and everything that constitutes such space," said Varini. "These spaces are and remain the original media for my painting. I work "on site" each time in a different space and my work develops itself in relation to the spaces I encounter."nnVarini has created similar installations in public spaces around the world, including the Granary Building at London arts institution Central Saint Martins and the ladies toilets at the city's V&A museum.   Less

SOTT 'Earth Changes' video summary of extreme weather events and environmental indicators of 'planetary upheaval' (seismic, volcanic, etc) in September 2015. nnNo matter the season or 'normal' climate, these days vehicles, homes and people are being washed away in deluges - the world over - on a regular basis. Forget "one month's average rainfall falling within hours" - last month, TWO MONTHS' average rainfall fell within a day and turned parts of southern Japan into inland seas. In the US, Utah experienced its worst ever flash-flooding, and the entire Eastern Seaboard was soaked with up to a foot of rain. This month, we also have clips of deluges in Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Norway, Thailand, Taiwan, China, Sierra Leone, and New Zealand.nnViolent volcanic eruptions in Japan, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Indonesia foreshadowed a massive 8.3 magnitude earthquake off Chile, which sent a 4.5 meter tsunami crashing into the coast and causing widespread damage. Hailstones the size of footballs fell in Naples, Italy. Brisbane, Australia, was buried in up to 4 inches (8cm) of hail, while a gigantic hole opened up on a nearby beach and swallowed a campsite. The rate of meteor fireball sightings continues to increase; in September there were spectacular sightings over Bangkok and Los Angeles.nnWildfires continue burning up much of California, which last month saw its 'third-largest' wildfire in history as whole towns were consumed and tens of thousands of residents were forced to flee. The other major outbreak of wildfires on the planet in September occurred in Indonesia, from where a smoky haze enveloped much of southeast Asia for the second time in three years. 'Slash-and-burn' farming is being blamed, but the fires occur in peatlands that release lots of methane, leaving us wondering if the primary fuel source for these fires isn't coming up from below.nnExtreme weather also hit the Middle East, which was engulfed in an 'unprecedented' sandstorm that stretched from Iraq to Cyprus and south to Saudi Arabia.
