Set in an alternate version of the late 19th Century, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a unique story featuring an odd assortment of legendary fictional Victorian characters who join up to foil "The Fantom" who is trying to start a World War. The League consists of Allan Quatermaine (Sean Connery), Captain Nemo (Maseeruddin Shah), Mina Harker (Peta Wilson), Dorian Gray (Stuart Townsend), Tom Sawyer (Shane West), Dr Jekyll (Jason Flemyng) and Rodney Skinner AKA The Invisible Man (Tony Curran). This amazing adventure came from the creative mind of Alan Moore who is responsible for some of the renowned graphic novels of recent years including V For Vendetta, Watchmen and From Hell.nnAlthough the movie is star studded and was made on a very high budget, it seems to be Captain Nemo's immense car which captured the imagination of the cinema going public. The striking vehicle was used for a number of scenes and even featured on the poster.nnThe Nautilus Car was designed by Carol Spier and of course entirely custom made for the production. The basic starting point, the chassis, is from a Land Rover Fire Tender. A unique fibreglass body was then added and a steel sub frame then constructed in the engine bay to house the Rover V8 engine required to power it. 6 enormous wheels, measuring 28 inches (72 cm) in diameter complete the basic car. The whole car also raises and lowers itself in spectacular style via a powerful hydraulic system.nnIt is the detail and finish on the car is what really sets it apart from any other vehicle ever seen on the silver screen. Captain Nemo, also known as Prince Dakkar, was created by Jules Verne in 1870. The classic Nemo was the son of the Raja of Bundelkund. Moore's comic book version suggests he might be a Sikh. The Hindu heritage is very prominent in the detailing and the accoutrements adorning the vehicle.nnTo the front, either side of a vast decorative radiator grille are two representations of Ganesha, the Hindu deity. The elephant motif is repeated on the door handles. Other panels and sections all over the car feature carvings of Gods and symbols. These spectacular flourishes are finished in a gold colour dressed down by the art department to look aged and weathered. The same level of attention continues within the cockpit area with intricate mouldings and decorations throughout. The upholstery is faux light brown leather with a Silver band running along the top. The back seat is curved.nnThe off white paint work is finished in a flat tone with a deliberately cracked and crazed finish. There are some minor repairs and changes in colour dotted around the bodywork, evidence of running repairs on-going during filming. The original hard top is no longer present. There were only 2 cars made for filming, this one is the only complete running version. The other had scaffolding permanently fixed around the seats to house the cameras for close ups on the actors.nnThis car is spectacular. It measures 22 feet long and 9 feet wide. It is not suitable or legal for road use but the car still runs beautifully and retains most of its original functionality. The car will, according to those who have driven it, reach 80 miles an hours and will corner superbly! Since filming completed the car has featured at motor shows in Essen Germany and in London. Online communication creates a situation where young artists, separated by geography but brought together through the web, can share the same obsessions and quickly develop remarkably similar aesthetics. The umbrella of music sometimes called witch house is perhaps the most obvious example of this in the last few years, since it combined musical concerns (moody synths, slow tempos, warped vocals, allusions to Southern rap) with a specific visual aesthetic (anonymous producers shielded by hoodies, Christian imagery, deep knowledge of the computer keyboard's symbol keys), and so many artists with these exact qualities appeared simultaneously. Unusually, the bulk of the movement could be traced to precisely one source, Salem, demonstrating how much sway that sometimes reviled outfit had over the minds of budding young producers who spend way too much time online.nOnce a scene or sound crystalizes, you can bet that the most interesting artists to emerge from it will quickly set off on their own and develop an individual voice. Balam Acab, the project of 20-year-old Pennsylvanian Alec Koone, was rightly slotted with witch house when he released his See Birds EP in 2010. He has the warped voices and the slow tempos, he was on the right label, and his IRL identity had a cultivated air of mystery. But the careful construction of See Birds hinted that his musical ear was a cut above, and now his excellent full-length debut, Wander / Wonder, confirms it. This is a personal and distinctive record with its share of current reference points that nonetheless doesn't need a scene to prop it up.nA few things set Balam Acab apart from the pack, first being the overall mood. The post-Salem "dark and creepy" crawl became a cliché in record time, but Wander / Wonder, despite the spectral voices that take the lead on every track, has no hints of nightmares or grim violence. Instead, its primary concern is simple aesthetic beauty, the way a small and specific combination of sounds, carefully arranged but given room to breathe, can have a deep emotional impact. It's pretty, in other words, but its prettiness never feels manipulative or overbearing. It's the sort of music that exists at the intersection between art and design, but it manages to avoid feeling sterile.nThere are eight tracks here in 37 minutes, the perfect length given the consistent mood. They have vague titles like "Apart" and "Now Time" and "Oh, Why" that serve as a light tint but don't really point to anything in particular. In fact, differentiating between the tracks seems sort of beside the point, since so many of the same motifs pop up over and over again: The album feels very much like one sustained thing. The basic elements are twinkly keyboards and and music-box chimes, dusty crackles floating on sounds of shifting liquid, and deep basslines bumping into the occasional drum machine clap. Floating above it all are the voices, pitched up to accentuate their delicacy and set loose in a cloud of echo. While the current vogue is for sampled vocals that allude to R&B, Balam Acab's mostly have a classical feel, sounding like they are pulled from recordings of ancient hymns and airs. Accentuating the "chamber dub" qualities are liberal samples of orchestral sections and nylon string guitar. But the most important instrument of all is silence, which frames every note and brings it to the foreground.nWhere the ghostly dubstep of Burial, an obvious antecedent, has a crucial connection to the urban street, Wander / Wonder is pastoral, more likely to bring to mind sunlight slanting through a window that overlooks a rural garden. And you can't have a garden without water. As anyone who has ever knocked over a cup next to a computer knows, water is the digital sphere's mortal enemy, the thing that can bring our precious electrical circuits down in an instant. In line with recent productions by Clams Casino and AraabMuzik, Wander / Wonder has has an obsession with the sound of the life force: Laced throughout are samples of lapping currents, slow drips, and light splashes. These accents reinforce both the bucolic feel and, with the complexity of the natural world that computers still envy, liberates the music from the computer grid. They also make Wander / Wonder an immersive experience, like something you lower yourself into, inch by inch. Magic! Mystery! Adventure! Lamentation that Vincent Price is dead so instead we have Smaug for our MCU Sorcerer Supreme! Doctor Strange is coming to the big screen next year, but Hasbro got the ball rolling early at San Diego Comic-Con with an exclusive Book of the Vishanti Marvel Legends action figure set. A coworker helpfully lent me his for this video, and in thanks I took possession of it and turned him into a frog and left him in Central Park. I'm sure that won't have any lasting consequences.nnThe box itself is a big cardboard Book of the Vishanti with a red molded inner sleeve for the figures. And it looks pretty cool, just as a box. A few cardboard pages on the inside show nice art of the five characters in the set, and various mystical words and symbols.nnThe set comes with a life-size all-seeing Eye of Agamotto, which is awesome on paper. Unfortunately, it's just a plastic shell with just the front painted gold. It's really light and can flip over easily, and the other side is a dull gray plastic. Still, it's the Eye of Agamotto and you can wear it, which is cool.nnThe set includes five figures: Doctor Strange in astral form, Brother Voodoo, Hela, Magik, and Dormammu. They're all in 6-inch Marvel Legends scale, and have plenty of posability if you want to take them out of the box. They also come with a bunch of accessories. Doctor Strange has magic effects that clip to his wrists and are a similar color to his astral form. Hela and Magik come with swords. Brother Voodoo comes with a sick green staff with ghosts coming out of it. And Dormammu comes with two translucent flaming skulls. And Dormammu looks just like he does in Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, which is neat.nnThe Book of the Vishanti set was an SDCC exclusive available at the convention for $105, so you might have a hard time finding it. (Almost like peeling, but leave enough flesh attached so that the skin does not curl).nnCut out mathematical symbols from the apple skins. I am going with a big Pi sign and the signs for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. From the "Embrya" albumrnrn.................rnrnBiography by Steve HueyrnrnAlong with fellow founders D'Angelo and Erykah Badu, Maxwell was enormously important in defining and shaping the neo-soul movement that rose to prominence over the latter half of the '90s. Drawing his greatest inspiration from the concept of the R&B auteur (looking to artists like Prince, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, etc.), Maxwell recorded some of the most ambitious R&B of his time, becoming wildly popular and often earning critical raves in the process. What was more, his recurring theme of romantic monogamy set him apart from the vast majority of his bump'n'grind lover-man contemporaries.rnrnMaxwell was born May 23, 1973, in Brooklyn, NY; he adopted his middle name as his stage moniker, keeping his real identity a closely guarded secret out of concern for his family's privacy. Born of Puerto Rican and black Caribbean stock, Maxwell suffered the loss of his father (in a plane crash) when he was just three years old. The experience made him a deeply religious child, and he first began singing in his Baptist church. Still, he didn't really get serious about music until age 17, when he began writing his own songs using a cheap Casio keyboard given to him by a friend. Initially influenced by early-'80s urban R&B, he progressed rapidly, and by 1991 he was performing on the New York club scene, despite ridicule from classmates who couldn't imagine the shy, awkward teenager doing anything of the sort. After making a name for himself, he signed a recording contract with Columbia in 1994.rnrnMaxwell recorded his debut album that year, working extensively with several collaborators: songwriter Leon Ware (who'd co-written much of the material on Marvin Gaye's I Want You album in 1976), guitarist Wah Wah Watson (who'd also worked with Gaye), and multi-instrumentalist Stuart Matthewman (a longtime cohort of Sade). Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite was a romantic concept album in the vein of Gaye's greatest '70s work, with a more modern flavor courtesy of Prince's influence; inspired by a brief but intense affair, the record's giddy celebration of committed monogamy could have come off as old-fashioned as its classic influences, given the marketplace dominance of hip-hop soul at the time. Partly for those fears, it wasn't released right away, although a series of shake-ups in Columbia's management played a bigger role in the delay. It wasn't until the spring of 1996 that Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite finally appeared. Sales were slow to take off at first, even though Maxwell scored some airplay with "...Til the Cops Come Knockin'." The gold-selling second single "Ascension (Never Wonder)" lit the fuse, however, and Urban Hang Suite went platinum before a year had passed, also earning a Grammy nomination.rnrnNow elevated to sex-symbol status, Maxwell capitalized on his breakthrough with the MTV Unplugged EP, taken from his live MTV performance. It attracted attention and acclaim outside the R&B community with the left-field cover choices "This Woman's Work" (by prog rocker Kate Bush) and "Closer" (the Nine Inch Nails hit). Additionally, the Unplugged version of "Whenever, Wherever, Whatever" earned him another Grammy nomination (for Best Male Pop Vocal). Anticipation for his second full-length album was high, and when Embrya was released in 1998, it entered the charts at number three. Reviews were more mixed this time around, with some critics charging that Maxwell's ambition had crossed the line into indulgence; still, the record duplicated its predecessor's platinum sales. In 1999, Maxwell scored his biggest hit to date with the single "Fortunate," an R. Kelly composition he recorded for the soundtrack of the film Life; it was a mammoth success, ranking as the number one R&B hit of the year in Billboard magazine.
