Hammered Bowls are ceramic bowls created with a specially designed machine and hammer. The object grows within the machine with each strike of the hammer. Once the object has been shaped, it is fired in the oven.nnThe growth rings that arise in the bowl are an imprint of the energy released on impact, so the object’s appearance is determined by the strength of its maker. Every bowl is unique because everyone’s hammer-blow is different and the clay absorbs each strike in a different place.nnThis project is a collaboration between Piet Hein Eek and Studio Floris Wubben. Winner of the Vimeo 'One Minute of Reflection' Weekend ProjectnnI noticed I hadn't been playing my piano much lately, and then I realised I had overlooked perhaps the most integral element of the instrument itself; the hammers. These are what create the actual sound by striking the wire, and yet, the shiny piano keys always get all the attention.nnThis is a little bit of improv, a few tentative chords and no sense of rhythm, shot with an EOS 550D with a Canon f/2.8 100mm Macro lens. I used a tripod to fix the camera in position, and my phone's LED as a key light. Less

Footwear designer Benjamin John Hall squeezed, sprayed and smashed his shoes to dye them during a live event at London College of Fashion.nnBenjamin John Hall's Design by Destruction project involved patterning custom-designed shoes using black dye embedded into or applied onto a set of three pairs of boots.nnModels were lead through plastic strips hung in a door frame and along a custom catwalk designed by London studio The Decorators, which was created to accommodate the activities planned for other events in the series.nnThe first pair of knee-high leather boots had white uppers and black legs, which pouches filled with ink positioned on both shins.nnHall squeezed these pouches so the ink spurted from them onto the white sections, spilling onto the catwalk and causing the audience the jump back slightly. The dye created splattered patterns across the front of the shoes.nnNext out was a pair of thigh-high leather boots with black uppers and platform heels, and white legs.nnHall sprayed each leg with dye from a bottle with a special nozzle, revealing horizontal strips that absorbed more dye that the rest of the material.nnFinally, he took a hammer to a pair of white leather ankle boots with porcelain beaks that had the dye encased within them.nnA wedge was placed beneath the curved sections before Hall hit them with a hammer to crack them without breaking off the protruding sections. The dye sept out of the cracked porcelain to colour the tips of the shoes.nnThe models then stood around a semi-circular platform so attendees could examine the end result close up and to give the dye a chance to dry.nnThe live display was the first in a series of 13 events curated for the relaunch of London College of Fashion's Fashion Space Gallery, which took place at the venue just off Oxford Street. Visual exercise for BA Film course.nBrief:nYou are to identify a location to visit. This can be indoors or outdoors.nIf you are unsure of a suitable location, you may do this by choosing a place perhaps a mile or two away from your home and walk to it, exploring and stopping along the way.nLook past the obvious. Edinburgh has a diverse urban scape (it's not all World Heritage and sand stone).nnWhen a particular spot takes your interest, sit for 15 minutes or so.nwait, observe, listen, think.nDocument your findings. Don’t be too literal. Attempt to communicate something of the nature of your chosen space.nWhat did you notice?nHow did the space make you feel?nWhat were you drawn to?nWhat did you hear?nWhat is the direction quality and angle of light?nHow can you best communicate this space through visuals?nMake an edit of 5 photographic images or a video sequence of no more than 5 shots, that you feel best encapsulate your findings. Add your work to your blog as described in Exercise 1. For clarification, this project must consist of five shots. Any less or more will not be accepted as a submission.nBe creative and imaginative in your interpretation of this brief. Refer to the examples that have been shown in lectures, especially in consideration to the range of approaches to the shots (wide shots, close ups etc.) as well as how they are sequenced in the final edit for creative purposes.nFilm students may work in pairs. The first installment of the Human Spirit Project, "Strength of a Woman" shows a day in the life of quarantine for 12-year-old Thembi Jakiwe, who has been diagnosed with MDR-TB in Cape Town, South Africa. Despite her age, she is a leader among her peers, as well as her medical team (including us). nnThe Human Spirit Project is a collaboration between Visual Epidemiology, the Stop TB Partnership, TB PROOF, and the World Health Organization. Find out more at: http://humanspirit.epidemictoemotion.orgnnETHICS NOTE ON THIS FILM: We take ethics in filming very seriously. As she is only 12 years old with a severe illness, we considered her a vulnerable subject and took special care and sensitivity when interviewing her, as well as when editing her interview. As with all our subjects, Thembi and her family provided full written and verbal consent and approved not only the interview, but also the final edit shown here. She and her family are fully aware of this distribution and are in full support - actually proponents - of it being shown globally, including online. Less
