So instead of just discussing the general increase in narcissism in our society I want to focus specifically on selfie culture & how it relates to narcissism. The earliest form of the selfie was when artists painted their self portraits. Many classical artists only painted a handful of self-portraits during their careers. It wasn't until the mid nineteenth century with the creation of mirrors and the advent of photography that people could worship their own form. Before that if you wanted to see an images of yourself you'd have to look at a reflection in water or be wealthy enough to afford an artist to paint a painting of you. Yes there were also mirrors in the ancient world but they were expensive and crude. Silver on glass in 1835 changed all of that and before that it was probably only the upper class and upper middle class people that could afford the technology to feed their narcissism by gazing at themselves. The mirror was a selfie that existed only when you stood in front of the mirror with light shining on you and it could only show you in real time.
