A police officer in Michigan put a young mother into a restraining chair and hacked off her hair weave. Video shows an officer shoving Charda Gregory, restraining her, and then using scissors to cut out the artificial hair that was sewn into a braid on Gregory’s scalp. “I was confused. I didn’t know what happened and what was going on,” said Gregory. Warren police officials say they do ask prisoners to remove clipped-in long hair extensions, so they can’t be used as a weapon or to commit suicide. But a weave is different, and Police Commissioner Jere Green says what Officer Bernadette Najor did was not a proper use of force. “There’s a real simple thing: it’s called right and wrong. And to me this is something that I won’t tolerate, I don’t think the citizens of Warren will tolerate it,” said Green. Less

At least eight people have been killed in clashes with Chinese security forces in the far west restive region of Shin-jiang. According to Chinese media reports, the victims were shot dead after attacking a police station. This is the second deadly attack by security forces in the resource-rich region in less than a month. At least 14 people--including six women, were killed two weeks ago. Locals say they were all members of a family who were killed in a raid on their house near Kashghar. China's Shin-jiang region is home to nearly 10 million Muslim Wee-gers. The ethnic minority community has been complaining about Beijing's discrimination and cultural and religious repressions for decades. Israeli forces have stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in the East Jerusalem al-Quds to disperse Palestinian protesters there. This comes ahead of discussions in the Israeli parliament later today on a plan to annex the holy site. Some reports suggest that at least 20 Palestinians have been injured and three others arrested in the crackdown. The Al-Aqsa compound is Islam’s third-holiest site after Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia. In recent months, Israeli forces and settlers have stepped up their attacks on the mosque, leading to violent confrontations between the two sides. Back in 2000, a provocative visit to the site by former Israeli premier Ariel Sharon triggered a second Intifada or uprising during which thousands of Palestinians were killed and injured. Less

01 March 2014, Ukraine - Russian troops reportedly seized control over most of Crimean peninsula of Ukraine located on the northern coast of the Black Sea, including civil buildings, airports, and military bases. Russian military intervention in Ukraine allegedly began in the aftermath of the 2014 Ukrainian revolution. On 01 March, the Russian legislature approved the occupation of Crimea, while Russian officials continued to claim that their military forces in Crimea were not a breach of existing agreements between Russia and Ukraine. The Ukrainian response has been muted so far, with no military action on the part of Ukraine's government, which was installed in Kiev less than a week before the occupation. Many political leaders from the 'West' have voiced their concerns, and it is now widely known that President Putin and President Obama were on a ninety (90) minute telephone call. Putin has taken a firm stand with other political heads of Government, and the United Nations despite threats of sanctions and withdrawal from the forthcoming G8 summit. A rights group says Israeli troops who shot dead a Palestinian teenager in the West Bank last week, used live fire without warning. The group says Israeli forces had opened fire on innocent Palestinian youngsters who were out picking wild plants. The rights group said army commanders who approved the use of live rounds are primarily responsible for the death of the 15-year-old Palestinian. It added that mounting an armed ambush at teenagers harvesting plants is QUOTE - highly questionable. The Israeli army earlier claimed that they had warned the youngsters verbally and by shots in the air. Less

Military officials say that the number of suicides within the ranks of US special forces has hit record levels. The number of self-inflicted deaths is also high in Navy SEALs and Army Rangers. Experts believe the high amount of self-inflicted deaths is related to the effects of multiple years in combat. Suicide numbers have risen steadily but they have reached their highest levels over the past two years say politicians following the issue. Troubled troops also have difficulties adjusting to the change in demand of military services. With the US' shrinking troop levels, many soldiers roles may feel diminished especially if they tie their identity to being in the military. Experts believe that it may take more than a year to evaluate the effects of long-term combat on special operations units who run missions from assassinations to humanitarian aid. The Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps special operations commands make up about 59,000 people, according to the Pentagon. Less
