They come from dysfunctional families, they are desperately seeking acceptance, they let their emotions get the best of them, and the list goes on. But a similarity that seems to especially stand out is a sense of isolation. Anderson's characters are adrift, looking for someone or something to connect with in their lonely worlds. This idea is expressed visually through the use of long/extreme long shots. We are often presented with characters lost within the frame, and therefore have trouble connecting with said characters--we become isolated ourselves. Paul Thomas Anderson has been my favorite filmmaker since I started watching films closely. I've always wanted to somehow pay tribute to the influence his stories have had on my life, and so I finally decided to string each of his feature films together in chronological order, beginning with There Will Be Blood, set in 1898, and eventually arriving at Punch-Drunk Love, which was set in the present day when it was shot in 2002.nnFrankly, this technique was mostly just an excuse to delve into some of PTA's more emotional themes, and draw connections between Freddie Quell, Daniel Plainview, Dirk Diggler and an entire entourage of colorful characters. Hopefully, lovers of PTA's style and technique will find this essay to be something of an ode to a true Master of filmmaking and his body of work.nnFor educational purposes only.
