In a classic rags to riches story, 14-year-old Israeli from Holon with no prior modeling experience has been chosen to be the face of Dior, one of France’s top companies. At the modest home in the Tel Aviv suburb she shares with her mother and two younger siblings, Sofia Mechetner’s life seems far removed from the bright lights of the fashion world. Her mother works a series of odd jobs, including cleaning homes and offices, sewing and caring for elderly persons, and it’s often up to Sofia to care for her younger brother and sister once they all get home from school. Israel’s Channel 2 accompanied her for several days leading up to Paris Fashion Week and the job that would change her life. In a report aired Friday night, Sophia is seen cooking afternoon meals, cleaning and folding laundry for her family while her mother is away. She shares a bedroom with her siblings and has few friends over because she’s embarrassed, she says, of the modesty of their apartment. Her mother sleeps on the sofa in the living room. Mechetner stumbled into the modeling world by accident, according to the report, and it was series of coincidences that led her to be signed to Dior on her very first foray into modelling. The teen was discovered in Israel, based on a selfie she took, by the Roberto modeling agency, whose owner decided that so unique was her look, he would take a chance and aim for the big leagues in Paris. Roberto suggested Sophia to the small, exclusive Viva Agency in Paris, which works with just 70 models worldwide. The agency agreed and flew her out for a photo shoot and an audition. But upon her arrival, chaperoned by a representative from her Israeli agency, the owners of Viva were taken aback by Sophia’s youth and canceled the shoot. Disappointed, Mechetner and her escort wandered around Paris, when they walked past a Dior store and decided to go in. Her chaperone immediately recognized Dior’s head designer Raf Simons, who happened to be in the same store. Mechetner’s escort told Channel 2 that she excitedly approached Simons for a photo, seizing the opportunity to introduce the fresh-faced Sofia. She and Simons exchanged contact details, and the two Israelis left the store. Simons then called Dior’s casting director to tell him about the young Israeli model he had encountered. The casting director promptly called the Viva Agency, asking for Sofia. The Paris agents were stunned at the request for the young Israeli model, who had never even booked a single shoot or walked any runway, but with Dior calling, they raced to secure Sophia. Her own room Back in Israel, several weeks have passed and Sophia is slowly getting back into her routine, when her Israeli agent calls with an urgent summons to his office. He tells her she is to be the new face of Dior. In return, he says, she will be paid “close to a million shekels.” Sofia, so attuned to the hardships faced by her family, promptly calls her mother and tells her the news. “You can quit your job, mom,” she says, half crying, half laughing. Several days later, Sofia has had a crash course in how to walk a runway and is opening the Dior show — and a new chapter for her and her family. Asked what she’ll do with her million-shekel paycheck, Sofia says laughingly: “I expect we’ll move to an apartment where I will have my own room.” ---- ---- ---- ---- I guess she has the malnourished, poor, orphaned, underage look, that French clothes companies are interested in? Thank you!!nnEveryone had been saying the just out Sony A7s is a low light monster of a camera. There was only way to find out. To try it out!nnI had a think about what I could do that could show it off and blow people's socks off. After all if it could do what people were saying...nnTo be able to shoot at crazy high ISOs is not about just seeing in the dark, At times I am shooting "night for day" here and for the most part it's not something I would actually ever want do. I want night to be dark....but doing this here really does show just how much the sensor can see. nnThe biggest benefit for me with this camera's sensitivity will be shooting in low light situations where normally you are at the top of your camera's ISO before it gets hideous and also wide open at F1.4. This sort of shallow depth of field may look pretty but it's not much fun trying to keep moving people in focus! To have a camera that could shoot in these conditions, have a clean image AND have a nice depth of field to solve focus headaches? This could be a very valuable tool indeed. nnJames Miller and I went down to our favourite shooting haunt, Brighton with our matching A7s to see what we could get and try out different profiles. James shot mostly S-Log. I mostly shot various Cine gamma modes. nnPointing away from practical lights so I could push the ISO up to see just how far you could push it. Just how much can you see in the dark?nnBrighton Beach has no lights on it of course. There are lights on the promenade but there are a lot of people who sit out there in the dark that you can barely see with your eyes. This camera though? Well take a look!nnI shot most of the daylight stuff at ISO 100 in Cine Gamma 4 and S-Gamut colour. A very flat image, not quite S-Log but close. nnMy glass was: Canon 24-70 F2.8II, Canon 70-200mm F2.8 IS II, Sigma 35mm ART F1.4, SIgma 50mm ART F1.4nnI used the Small HD DP4 as a monitor/ viewfinder, additionally I had a Tiffen variable ND filter and my Really Right Stuff tripod with FH-350 head. To top if off I also had my new Special Edition Kessler Crane "Burl Wood" Pimipn' edition for the odd slider move!nnWith the shots where in goes from dark to light and vice versa, these dark parts are what I could see with my eyes. They were all shot with high ISOs and graded down to show you what I could see and what the camera could see if it was set to around 800-1600iso as opposed to what I actually was shooting at. At night between 6,400-80,000!nnIt was incredibly dark out there so even though I could see everything way better than my eyesight could some of the shots with dark area in them were just too noisy not to fix. I used the ever marvellous Neat Video to get these results. nnSo there is no cheating here by grading it dark. There was only way to find out. To try it out!nnI had a think about what I could do that could show it off and blow people's socks off. After all if it could do what people were saying...nnTo be able to shoot at crazy high ISOs is not about just seeing in the dark, At times I am shooting "night for day" here and for the most part it's not something I would actually ever want do. I want night to be dark....but doing this here really does show just how much the sensor can see. nnThe biggest benefit for me with this camera's sensitivity will be shooting in low light situations where normally you are at the top of your camera's ISO before it gets hideous and also wide open at F1.4. This sort of shallow depth of field may look pretty but it's not much fun trying to keep moving people in focus! To have a camera that could shoot in these conditions, have a clean image AND have a nice depth of field to solve focus headaches? This could be a very valuable tool indeed. nnJames Miller and I went down to our favourite shooting haunt, Brighton with our matching A7s to see what we could get and try out different profiles. James shot mostly S-Log. I mostly shot various Cine gamma modes. nnPointing away from practical lights so I could push the ISO up to see just how far you could push it. Just how much can you see in the dark?nnBrighton Beach has no lights on it of course. There are lights on the promenade but there are a lot of people who sit out there in the dark that you can barely see with your eyes. This camera though? Well take a look!nnI shot most of the daylight stuff at ISO 100 in Cine Gamma 4 and S-Gamut colour. A very flat image, not quite S-Log but close. nnMy glass was: Canon 24-70 F2.8II, Canon 70-200mm F2.8 IS II, Sigma 35mm ART F1.4, SIgma 50mm ART F1.4nnI used the Small HD DP4 as a monitor/ viewfinder, additionally I had a Tiffen variable ND filter and my Really Right Stuff tripod with FH-350 head. To top if off I also had my new Special Edition Kessler Crane "Burl Wood" Pimipn' edition for the odd slider move!nnWith the shots where in goes from dark to light and vice versa, these dark parts are what I could see with my eyes. They were all shot with high ISOs and graded down to show you what I could see and what the camera could see if it was set to around 800-1600iso as opposed to what I actually was shooting at. At night between 6,400-80,000!nnIt was incredibly dark out there so even though I could see everything way better than my eyesight could some of the shots with dark area in them were just too noisy not to fix. I used the ever marvellous Neat Video to get these results. nnSo there is no cheating here by grading it dark. So maybe those media outlets accusing Russia and her President of the downing of the MH-17 would like to stand up and apologize? To apologize, you need fiber, morals, substance, backbone and character. To sling accusations all you need is to be a foul-mouthed guttersnipe, all you need is looseness of morals, an absence of character and a general nastiness. To refuse to apologize after slinging the mud shows pure spinelessness, spitefulness and worthlessness. I could end the article here because after this, what else is there to say? To those who blamed Russia, to those who aired parents of children, in mourning, asking for "President Putin" to give back their children, there is much to say. For a start, the stance in this column has been from the beginning respect for the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in first place. In second place, respect for the families and loved ones of the victims. In third place, respect for the families and loved ones of the victims. And now for the rest. The following accusation was drawn up by others and by myself against NATO and was sent to the ICC. It did not even merit the courtesy of a reply, as predicted (See indictment of NATO). And now back to the report itself. OCSE monitor Michael Bociurkiw in an interview shortly after the incident on July 17 stated that there are two or three pieces of fuselage which show indications of heavy machine-gun fire and no evidence of missile damage. The same monitor declared later that certain pieces of the fuselage looked different a few days after he had first seen them. On July 22, he stated to the BBC that certain sections of the fuselage "do look different than when we first saw them". What about the eye-witness reports of two Ukrainian Air Force fighter jets trailing the plane at the time of the incident? How to explain the circular holes bend inwards at impact, when such holes are made by bullets from machine-gun fire? Shrapnel from a BUK missile system would have caused tears in the fuselage more of a triangular shape and would not have concentrated on and targeted the cockpit specifically. Furthermore, fuselage sections on another part of the aircraft have outward-bent impact marks, showing that the MH-17 was being fired at from two different directions. Why were Facebook accounts disproving the western theories closed down, why were blogsites disproving the western theories hacked, why did evidence disproving the western theories disappear from the Net? EXACTO’s specially designed ammunition and real-time optical guidance system help track and direct projectiles to their targets by compensating for weather, wind, target movement and other factors that could impede successful hits.”nnBut behind the dry description is a fascinating use of technology that the Pentagon has invested more than $25 million into since the program’s inception in 2008. nnWhile the exact technologies used remain classified, an automatic aiming rifle consists of two parts – a guidance system and the bullet. The first tracks the target, meaning that the sniper simply has to “see” it with a with a sophisticated optical sight, and send signals to the bullet. With a number of fins and an on-board computer, the bullet – which may also calculate air pressure – constantly re-adjusts its path to home in on the target. To make rapid fire even simpler, it may simply react to any heat or movement near the target area, in what is known as “fire-and-forget.” nnIn 2012 another government researcher, Sandia National Labs, tested its own guided bullet, and claimed similar accuracy and distance results for it, though it uses a laser beam for targeting – which could make it less useful in smoky or foggy weather conditions, as well as being easier to spot for the enemy.nnCurrently, US Army snipers are expected to hit a target 600 meters away, nine times out of ten. But after a certain point, about a kilometer away, accuracy falls off sharply, even in perfect conditions. Besides, current technology simply does not allow snipers to easily estimate the impact of humidity and cross-winds on the bullet trajectory, meaning that even the best will often have to fire several bullets before they even get close – ruining the surprise factor, and placing themselves in danger of return fire. Pakistan’s spy agency has provided the funding for a deadly 2009 suicide attack on a CIA base in Afghanistan that ranks as one of the deadliest days in the agency’s history, according to a newly declassified State Department cable. The heavily redacted cable, sent about two weeks after the attack on Dec. 30, 2009, reports on a meeting between operatives belonging to the Haqqani network, a highly capable al Qaeda-linked terror group, and unidentified officers with Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence. According to the cable, which was released Wednesday, the ISI was suspected of giving the Haqqani network $200,000 to “enable” the attack on Forward Operating Base Chapman in Afghanistan’s Khost province. The Chapman attack killed seven CIA officers and a Jordanian intelligence operative. It was carried out by a double agent, a Jordanian named Hammam Khalil Mohammed, who was invited onto the base to help the agency track down senior al Qaeda operatives. When he blew himself up during a meeting with senior CIA officials responsible for hunting al Qaeda, he greatly hindered Langley’s effort to dismantle the terror network. While Pakistan’s ISI has a well-known record of supporting Islamist militant groups, its funding of the Chapman attack remains unconfirmed. The cable notes that it is an “information report” and “not finally evaluated intelligence.” The CIA did not answer questions Wednesday about the report’s veracity, or whether stronger intelligence proves that the ISI funded the Chapman bombing. The National Security Archive at George Washington University published the cable, which was part of a trove of documents received under a Freedom of Information Act request. Another State Department cable, also published Wednesday, reported that leaders of the Haqqani network were suspected of meeting monthly with the ISI in Islamabad as of late December 2009 — around the time of the Chapman bombing. The ISI provided the Haqqani network during these meetings with an “unknown amount of funding” for “unspecified operations,” the cable reported. In December 2009, the ISI and Haqqani network met twice, according to thatcable. During the first meeting, they “discussed funding for operations” in Khost province. During the second, ISI provided “direction to the Haqqanis to expedite attack preparations and lethality in Afghanistan.” Other documents published by the National Security Archive give new insights into the Haqqani funding sources. The ISI has a long history of playing both sides in America’s long war against radical Islamist groups in the tribal areas of Afghanistan and Pakistan. Anticipating an eventual American withdrawal from Afghanistan, Islamabad has cultivated close ties with Afghan militants, providing them with funds and arms. Pakistani intelligence officials believe their relationship with Afghan militants, such as the Haqqani network and the Afghan Taliban, provides Islamabad with a decisive advantage in its contest with India, Pakistan’s historic enemy, for influence in Afghanistan.
