My Pound for Pound top 9 for September 2017nI am only looking at matches from between 9/1/2015 and 9/1/2017nI am considering level of competition and performance. nThese rankings do not take into account anything before 9/1/2015. This is not a career achievement list.nThis list dose not reflect my opinion of who I think will win future matchups.nLike any and all Top 10 Lists. It is subjective, but I fell that I have a set of rules to guide me.nn1.Terence Crawford. Picking Crawford is easy. You can’t expect that every championship opponent be a world beater, but there is a minimum. All of Crawford’s opponents at least meet the minimum. Viktor Postol & Julius Indongo are world beaters. Maybe (my highest compliment) Career Definers. He’s been more dominant and against better overall competition than anyone else. It’s not close. His 3rd round knockout of Julius Indongo raised the bar even higher.n2.Keith Thurman I keep flipping between Canelo Alvarez and Keith Thurman. I fell that both Shawn Porter & Danny Garcia are both top of the line boxers. I think Luis Collazo meets the minimum, but I’m on the fence with him. He beat and deserved the wins over Porter and Garcia, but not in the way that Crawford has been doing.n3. Canelo Alvarez I had Canelo at #5 in my past rankings, but after taking a closer look at who he fought and who those above him have fought. I have to move him up. 155 is a good weight for Miguel Cotto. It’s just one pound over the light middleweight limit where Cotto is at his best. Amir Khan is a very good boxer, but has well known chin issues. Khan did outbox and expose flaws Canleo for 5 rounds before the fight ended in the 6th round. Liam Smith was the defending champion. I think overall Julio Cesar Chavez Jr is underrated, but by the time they fought I think he is on the debatable side of meeting the minimum.n4. Andre Ward If You want to know why I have Ward at #4 and not #1? Alexander Brand.. That’s why. Alexander Brand should not have been in a fight with Andre Ward, or any other top boxer. He's the wort opponent of anyone on this list. Ward’s two wins over Sergey Kovalev. Although I personally think he should have won the first time by complete domination, and not by subjective it could have gone either way. His win over Sullivan Barreran Is looking better and better. It doesn't hurt That Vasyl Lomachenko fought Miguel Marriaga (Who yes is a better boxer than Alexander Brand) who was coming off a loss.n5. Vasyl Lomachenko. Lomachenko’s fight against Miguel Marriaga who was coming off a losss kind of derailed some good momentum that he had been building. Roman Martinez came into the fight as a champion. Nicholas Walters was supposed to give him a test or even beat him and Jason Sosa had been a champion, which he did not lose as a result of a loss. Outside of Crawford I don’t think anyone has looked better against high quality opponents. However, those wins are sandwiched between Miguel Marriaga and Romulo Koasichan6. Gennady Golovkin. GGG’s resume is not as bad as his critics say it is. David Lemieux took two early losses. He might not be a world beater, but he much better than the minimum. I think the jury I still out on Dominic Wade. Kell Brook had to come up two weight classes, which hurts Golovkin’s ranking, but he’s a very good boxer. The Daniel Jacobs was a Career Definer, but he barely beat him.n7. Anthony Joshua. Joshua has been on really good run as WBA/IBF Heavyweight Champion. It might not have been an easy win, but knocking out Wladimir Klitschko for now ends the debate as to who the best heavyweight in the world is. He also has good wins over Dillian Whyte, Charles Martin, Dominic Breazeale and Eric Molinan8.Mikey Garcia. When it comes to “eye-test” talent I think Garcia is as good as anyone. However this list is about, and that’s not why he’s here. He’s here because he beat Adrien Broner who I fell is a very good boxer and before that Dejan Zlaticanin who was on a pretty good run. Garcia’s win over Broner says more about Garcia than it does about Bronern9. Errol Spence Jr. Yes I’m ranking a boxer with only one championship fight under his belt in my pound for pound top 10. Why? Because he deserves it. Chris Algieri in my opinion meets the minimum standard and I think Leonard Bundu does as well. Going to their fight a lot of people who know a thing or two about boxing felt that Kell Brook was the best welterweight in the world. While I don’t agree with that the fight was in Brook’s home town of Sheffield England. Over the past two years. (October 1, 2015-October 1, 2017)n1. Terence Crawford: Crawford is my number one pound for pound boxer. Every pound for pound list including this one is subjective. However over the past two years I just can't see an argument that would make me consider anyone else as the best boxer in the world. Not everyone he's fought are A+ world beaters (What I call career definers), but they have at least met the minimum requirement to be in a championship match. I would say his fights with both Viktor Postol and Julius Indongo were indeed career definers. He's also been one of the most active champion with 6 fights in the time frame. Here is why he has separated himself from the rest of the pack. In the six fights he has had in the past two years. He has been absolutely dominate. No boxer can say they have fought as high a level of competition, or has been as dominant as he has been.n2. Keith Thurman: This pick might come as a surprise. This is a case of quality over quantity. Thurman has wins over Shawn Porter and Danny Garcia. This list is subject to my subjective opinion of their performances in the ring. I fell both fights were competitive fights. However I fell Thurman clearly won both times.n3. Gennady Golovkin** : Lets get this out of the way. While the fight was officially a draw. I scored the fight between Golovkin and Alvarez 8-4 for GGG. If he was given the nod over Canelo officially. I probably would have moved GGG over Thurman. I won't try to tell you he has an all time great resume even over the past two years. However it's better than his hatters will tell you it is.n4. Saul Alvarez**: I had Canelo at #3 and pretty much a 2b with Thurman in my last rankings. After the GGG fight I couldn't keep him at 2b. I thought GGG won the fight so I had to move him over Canelo.n5. Andre Ward* . Ward is officially retired. However he has been active over the past two years. If this was a career resume list he would rank higher. I am going to be blunt. He should have dominated Sergey Kovalev in their first fight. I don't think the talent level between the two is that close. Yes Kovalev was the #2 or 3 guy at light heavyweight. I happen to fell that Ward should have made a rematch unnecessary. I also fell that at the time of the stoppage in the second fight. Ward was pulling away, but it was still close in my opinion at the time. Ward's win over Sullivan Barrera is looking better and better all the time. Alexander Brand might be the least qualified opponent for anyone on this list.n6.Vasyl Lomachenko: Before fighting Miguel Marriaga who is a decent boxer, but was coming off a loss. I felt Lomachenko had a three fight run that was almost as good as what Crawford has been doing. Before that he fought Romulo Koasicha that also doesn't help his case. However he moved up to face Roman Martinez and won a championship. Nicholas Walters was supposed to be able to beat him. Jason Sosa had defended his championship in his previous fight. Even though he ws not champion when they fought. He did not lose it in the ring. n7. Anthony Joshua: It's not just his win over Wladimir Klitschko that has earned a pound for pound ranking for AJ. I also think Dominic Breazeale is the real thing and Dillian Whyte has some solid wins since their fight.n8. Mikey Garcia: Garcia has wins over the than unbeaten Dejan Zlaticanin and the talented Adrien Broner. n9. Errol Spence Jr. Going in to their fight there were plenty of people who felt that Kell Brook was the best welterweight in the world. Spence went in to his hometown to beat him. While Chris Algieri and Leonard Bundu might not be A+ world beaters, and neither fight was for a championship. They are both quality boxers.n10.. Wisaksil Wangek (Srisaket Sor Rungvisai): His first win over Roman Gonzalez was questionable. However in the second fight he left no doubt.n*Retired, but active the past two years. ** I had GGG beating Canelo 8-4 and my rankings reflect this. Less
