She has two teeth now, and we wear a furry vest all the time, and we're trying to have her learn what it's like to be a gorilla," said Zoo Assistant Mammal Curator Jill Kakta.nnThe zoo staff stays with Kindi 24 hours a day, hoping that one of their female gorillas can soon become her surrogate mom.nnIt's a scene that wouldn't look out of place in a game of 'What's the time Mr. Wolf'.nA heart-stopping video from Chiba, Japan shows a little boy turning his back on a lion enclosure only for the cat to charge forward and pounce - only stopped by the glass wall. nThe adorable tot, just two-years-old can be seen watching the male lion crouching by the rock at the back of the large class-enclosed space.nnnRemarkably the boy doesn't run away, he simply spins around to face the lion, his hand held out as he stumbles backward.nMaybe in his childish innocence he thought the big cat was just trying to come and play.nAccording to zookeepers the lion reportedly weighs more than 400lbs. He was taken to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. Zoo officials said he was alert when he was transported there.nnDirector Thane Maynard said the zoo's dangerous animal response team that practices for such incidents decided the boy was in "a life-threatening situation" and that they needed to put down the 400-pound-plus male gorilla named Harambe.nn"They made a tough choice and they made the right choice because they saved that little boy's life," Maynard said. "It could have been very bad."nnMaynard said he hadn't talked with the boy's parents yet. The Toronto Zoo announced a Canadian first today with the birth of two giant panda cubs. Er Shun, the Zoo’s female giant panda gave birth to her first cub at 3:31 AM (shown here) and the second cub was born at 3:44 AM.nnEr Shun is demonstrating excellent maternal instincts and began nursing, cleaning and cradling the first cub soon after its birth. Although giant panda twin births are common, the mother will only nurse and care for one cub instinctively. As a result, immediately following the birth of the second cub, Toronto Zoo staff from the Wildlife Health Centre, Wildlife Care and two giant panda experts from Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in China, retrieved the cub to initiate the Toronto Zoo's Giant Panda Twin Hand-Rearing Protocol. It was then placed in an incubator, in the maternity area of the giant panda house, and approximately an hour and a half after its birth the second cub was twin-swapped so it could begin the bonding process with Er Shun. nnThe first cub weighed 187.7 grams at birth and the second cub 115 grams.They are 1/900th the size of their mother, one of the smallest newborn mammals relative to its mother's size. While this is wonderful news, the tiny cubs are very vulnerable at this size, so the next several hours and days will be critical to their survival. The sex and paternity of the cubs is still unconfirmed and it could be several months before we are able to determine both of these.nnBoth mom and cubs will be kept in the maternity area in the giant panda house which is not viewable to the public. As the next few days and weeks are critical for the giant panda cubs, Toronto Zoo staff will be focused on the health and well-being of both Er Shun and her cubs, and we will continue to keep you updated on their progress. nnGiant panda cubs are born blind and weigh only 0.08 to 0.2 kilograms, and are about the size of a stick of butter. They are pink in colour, with short sparse white hair, and are 1/900th the size of their mother, one of the smallest newborn mammals relative to its mother’s size.nnThe Toronto Zoo has been working with many key partners who have played such important roles in this conservation success story and we are grateful for their continued support. Polar Bear Plunge at the San Diego Zoo was transformed into a winter wonderland early this morning, as nearly 26 tons of glistening white snow blanketed the polar bear exhibit. The three bears—Kalluk, Tatqiq and Chinook—showed their excitement by frolicking in the snow. They rolled around in the fresh powder and wrestled with each other all morning long. Animal care staff also scattered yams, carrots, melons and beef femur bones throughout the exhibit as added enrichment, and watched as the bears pounced and dug for their prizes.nnThis surprise snowy enrichment was made possible by donors who contributed to the animal care wish list on the San Diego Zoo website, sandiegozoo.org. Kalluk and Tatqiq’s mom was shot and killed when they were young cubs, and Chinook’s mother was nowhere to be found when the young cub was discovered roaming around the streets of a city alone.nnAs a threatened species, polar bears face danger from poachers and habitat loss, mostly due to climate change.nnZoo guests can visit Kalluk, Tatqiq and Chinook at Polar Bear Plunge during the San Diego Zoo’s Jungle Bells celebration presented by California Coast Credit Union.
