The FBI has released footage of the moment that Oregon militia spokesperson Robert 'Lavoy' Finicum was shot on January 26 on the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, during a press conference in Burns, Thursday. The footage shows Finicum’s truck being stopped by the FBI. Federal agents then proceeded to order Finicum to exit the vehicle. The truck then drove off, before reaching a FBI roadblock, here Finicum’s vehicle veered to the left, crashing into a snowbank. Finicum proceeded to leave the vehicle where he was surrounded by agents. He then, according to a FBI spokesperson, reached for his pocket, as he did this agents fatally shot Finicum. The spokesperson said a loaded handgun was found on Finicum’s person. Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy's three sons and around 150 militia members occupied a federal building in eastern Oregon on Saturday, in an attempt to keep two local ranchers from going to prison. The group seized the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge headquarters, located around 50 miles (80km) from Burns, after two of its members were scheduled to go to prison on Monday for setting fire to federal land. The jailed leader of an armed protest group that has been occupying a wildlife refuge in the US state of Oregon, has told the remaining protesters to stand down. Ammon Bundy and several senior leaders of his group were arrested on Tuesday during a traffic stop. One militia member was shot dead. Bundy’s lawyer read out a statement from his client: “To those remaining at the refuge: I love you. Let us take this fight from here. Please stand down. Please stand down.” There are conflicting accounts about the death of group member, Robert Finnicum. One protester said Finnicum charged at FBI agents – while another said he was shot at without provocation. Bundy’s group, which says its defending the US Constitution, has been protesting against the federal government’s control of areas of land in the west. The group began its occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge on 6 January. Following Tuesday’s arrests and shooting, locals and supporters have been urging the remaining protesters to abandon the occupation. B.J. Soper of the Pacific Patriot Network told reporters: “I asked them (protesters) to please go home. Let’s finish this fight somewhere else.” “They’re terrified. They don’t know what to do. I would ask them to go home, I want them to go home to their families. I don’t want any more deaths, anymore bloodshed. There is not reason to be a martyr in this. It’s already done.” Less

Burns, OR - An FBI agent is suspected of lying about firing twice at Robert "LaVoy" Finicum and may have gotten help from four other FBI agents in covering up afterward, authorities revealed Tuesday. The bullets didn't hit Finicum and didn't contribute to his death, but now all five unnamed agents, part of an elite national unit, are under criminal investigation by the U.S. Justice Department. Inspector General Michael Horowitz is leading the independent inquiry. The remarkable disclosure came as a team of local investigators released findings that two state troopers shot Finicum three times in the back during the chaotic scene at a police roadblock Jan. 26. One bullet pierced his heart, an autopsy showed. A prosecutor ruled the fatal shooting was legally justified, saying state law allows use of deadly force when officers believe a person is about to seriously injure or kill someone. Finicum kept moving his hands toward a pocket that contained a loaded handgun. Although he was shot from behind, Finicum had a trooper in front of him armed with a Taser who was thought to be in danger. Finicum, 54, an Arizona rancher, was one of the leaders of the Jan. 2 takeover of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge near Burns. Investigators gave no details to explain why the one FBI agent, a member of the Hostage Rescue Team, wouldn't report the two shots. They also didn't indicate what his four colleagues on the team did to warrant investigation other than saying it was related to conduct after the shooting. Read more here Less
