Like & Subscribe please!!!!nnThe definition of feminine beauty has evolved through time — and has been molded by society, culture — and technology, such as cosmetic procedures.nnIn multicultural Indonesia, ideals of beauty are varied although there are some traits commonly perceived attractive.nnIn the agrarian culture that makes up most of Indonesia, the concept of beauty is equated with fertility.nnThe persistence of fertility and desirability can be seen in the statues and reliefs at ancient Hindu stone temples such as Borobudur — and especially Prambanan — in Central Java, where women are pictured with large breasts, full and roundfigures and sometimes with children.nnSome Dayak tribes in Kalimantan have a different concept that involves a lot of pain similar to the Karen neck rings in Myanmar and the now-defunct foot-binding tradition for Chinese women.nnDayak women, and men, previously elongated their earlobes by adding large golden earrings, year after year.nnWhile the length of earlobes for men was not to exceed their shoulders, the women were allowed to have them down to their chest.nnThe tradition, however, has been abandoned by the younger generation. Only elders from noble families can today still be seen with long earlobes.nnThe current concept of Indonesian beauty shifted to looks starting in the early 20th century, thanks to the pervasiveness of Hollywood.nnAs most of the actresses in local films at that time were from Java, the beauties on screen shared the typical faces of Javanese women — with the exception of Fifi Young, a woman of Chinese descent who got her start in the 1940s.nnThe actresses had common traits: large, round eyes; blunt noses; long, jet-black and straight hair; light complexions and curvy, but proportional figures — traits that are still prized.nnIndonesia, however, has many different types of beauty. The word Thug is all over American pop culture these days, rappers name themselves Thug, celebrities get it tattooed on their bodies, even pop stars claim the Thug Life, but where does the word Thug come from? An Arab traveler writing about his visit to India first used the word in the year 1356, but Europeans first heard the word in the 1700’s as the British began to conquer India. By the 1830’s English control of the sub-continent was almost complete, but as they began to actually try and govern India, they realized they had a major problem: thousands of people were disappearing along the roads of the country, never to be seen again. They were victims of the Thugs. The Thuggee were supposedly a cult that supposedly strangled travelers to death as sacrifices to the Goddess Kali, but they were also robbers who robbed their victims before killing them and become an hereditary criminal caste- an attractive way to earn a living in a country on the perpetual edge of starvation.nnSo in the 1830’s the British government formed what was really the world’s first detective force, which relied on heavily on information from dubious informants- just like detective forces do today- to break the Thug cult. The Thugs were responsible for an estimated 50 thousand murders and, perhaps, had killed a million people over a thousand years of their secret work, according to some scholars. During the British investigation one Thug alone confessed to 931 murders himself.nnSo what connection does this strange story have to modern America?nWhile the cult of the Thuggee was definitely real, at least to some degree, the British also used it as propaganda to justify their conquest of India and brutal oppression of its people. Best selling books were written about the Thugs, newspaper articles, etc… it became a mini-industry in England. By the late 1800’s the word had passed into common usage to mean an unsophisticated violent criminal, definitely different than calling someone a gangster. In America, Hollywood movies picked up the word in the 30’s and made it part of American slang… fast forward to the early 90’s when rapper Tupac Shakur coined the phrase “Thug Life” to symbolize the struggle of the “have-nots” in urban America. nnNow Tupac himself was killed in Las Vegas after he and a large group of men stomped out a Crip gang member, but “Thug Life” lives on in pop-culture today. Take, for example, Atlanta rapper “Young Thug”. Often being accused of being gay for wearing women’s clothes, watching gay porn and assorted other discretions, Young Thug often takes to the internet to show off his Thug bona fides by flashing guns and making threats. Young Thug’s elaborate clothing is actually somewhat reminiscent of the original Indian Thugs, which actually makes him more Thuggish than Tupac himself in my book. nnBut where you can really see the connection between the Thugs of ancient India and modern America is in the use of the word as a scare tactic, a tool of social control on specific elements of the population. Take pro football player Richard Sherman, a guy that gets paid millions of dollars to slam his body into other people on the Sunday, which is supposedly the Lord’s day, but when he get a little too excited on national television, when he didn’t play the role of the humble black athlete who thanks God for his ballgame victory, the public and the media exploded, calling him lots of names, but mostly they called him a Thug. nnAnd finally, let us remember Trayvon Martin. Despite the fact that he was the one who got killed, once again the public and the media called him the Thug, and his killer’s defense team based their defense on a handful of photographs where the teenaged murder victim was supposedly posing as a thug. nnSo the word Thug has an interesting history, it shows us how ideas and words travel and transform through time and space. Led Zeppelin live from Earl's Court 1975nnRemastered Audio / VideonnEarls Court 1975 were five concerts performed by the English rock band Led Zeppelin in May of 1975.nn"Kashmir" is a song by the English rock band Led Zeppelin from their sixth album Physical Graffiti, released in 1975. It was written by Jimmy Page and Robert Plant (with contributions from John Bonham) over a period of three years with lyrics dating to 1973. The song became a concert staple, being performed by the band at almost every concert since its release. Page and Plant released a longer live version, recorded with an Egyptian/Moroccan orchestra, on No Quarter: Jimmy Page and Robert Plant Unledded (1994) and continued to perform the tune with an orchestra on their 1995 tour.nnThe song's signature chord progression, which first appeared on Page's home-studio work tapes, was an extension of a guitar-cycle that Page had been working on for years. This was the same cycle that produced "Black Mountain Side", "White Summer", and the unreleased track, "Swan-song". Because bass player and keyboardist John Paul Jones had been late for the recording sessions, Page used the time to work on the riff with drummer John Bonham. The two demoed it late in 1973. Plant later added the middle section, and in early 1974, Jones added the string parts.nnPage adopted an alternative guitar tuning: the strings are tuned to 'Open Dsus4' or DADGAD. Bonham's drums featured a phasing effect courtesy of an Eventide Instant Phaser PS-101 supplied by engineer Ron Nevison. Plant stated that Bonham's drumming is the key to the song: "It was what he didn't do that made it work". Sections of the song utilize a polymeter effect, with the drums and lyrics in quadruple meter while the melodic instruments play a triple meter rhythmic pattern.nnThe song includes many distinctive musical patterns of classical Moroccan, Indian and Middle Eastern music. Page explained, "I had a sitar for some time and I was interested in modal tunings and Arabic stuff. It started off with a riff and then employed Eastern lines underneath."nnThe lyrics were written by Plant in 1973 immediately after Led Zeppelin's 1973 US Tour, in an area he called "the waste lands" of Southern Morocco, while driving from Goulimine to Tantan in the Sahara Desert. This was despite the fact that the song is named after Kashmir, a region in the northwestern part of the Himalayas.nnAs Plant explained to rock journalist Cameron Crowe:nnThe whole inspiration came from the fact that the road went on and on and on. It was a single-track road which neatly cut through the desert. Two miles to the East and West were ridges of sandrock. It basically looked like you were driving down a channel, this dilapidated road, and there was seemingly no end to it. 'Oh, let the sun beat down upon my face, stars to fill my dreams...' This week on How to Drink I'm making a Knickerbocker, inspired by one of my favorite films of all time The Thin Man from 1934. As I mention in the episode The Thin Man is a really exceptional pre-code crime/mystery/comedy starring William Powell and Myrna Loy and it's adapted from a novel of the same name by Dashiell Hammett. When it came to making this movie Warner Brothers though Powell and Loy were bad choices for the film. Powell was already famous for portraying another film detective, Philo Vance, and wasn't known for his comedy chops. Loy was well recognized for her turn in a string of exotic femme fatale rolls and was seen as a bad fit for the movie. The director W.S. Van Dyke must have known something though, he made a strong case to the execs at the studio and got his way, and boy was he right. The movie was a massive success and led to an additional five sequels, sort of the Fast and Furious of it's day. The onscreen chemistry between Powell and Loy is so good that people thought they were real life husband and wife, they weren't of course.nnI'm a big fan of Hammett's novels and got myself a bit turned around on this one, since the Knickerbocker doesn't get drank in the film but does in the book, but that's ok because it's a perfectly appropriate drink for the movie and fantastic in it's own right. nnTraditionally this drink would have been served over the ice it was shaken with, but I see no reason it shouldn't be made a tad more elegant and served up in a Nick & Nora glass (which coincidentally is named for the protagonists of The Thin Man: Nick and Nora Charles). Also in the episode I mention that I'm using raspberry gum syrup, you don't need the gum, but use it if you got it. The raspberry is of course necessary. nnKnickerbockernn2.5 oz. / 75 ml.
