Goldsworthy comments on his "earthworks" and occasionally responds to off screen questions from Riedelsheimer while he painstakingly builds his outdoors sculptures. With some exceptions, such as a winding stone wall that he built in Mountainville, NY, Goldsworthy's creations are intentionally mutable works.nnWe see how several of them fall apart, melt, or drift away due to exposure to the elements; we also see, for example, a complex structure of interconnected sticks collapse while Goldsworthy is still working on it.nnRiedelsheimer takes us to Goldsworthy's home in Penport, Scotland, and to a French museum, but the emphasis of the film is on observing Goldsworthy at work. Listen to students reflect on their practice and process of making land art in the style of Andy Goldsworthy. Art 7 spent the quarter exploring Land Art. Our unit started off with some videos of Buddhist mandalas being made from sand and then swept away. Impermanence was emphasized throughout the project as the class watched Andy Goldsworthy work in his video Rivers and Tides. I invited students to think about a loss that they had experienced at some point in their life. It could be the loss of a pet, a relative, or even a feeling. As they worked to build their mandala they created their piece in memory of what was lost. See my website for more information about this project wp.me Less
