In the wake of last week’s Metrojet crash in Sinai, the Russian carrier is reportedly grounding its A321 aircraft while additional checks are carried out. The Russian Federal Transport Agency announced the decision, which will affect four aircraft in the Metrojet fleet. In the meantime, Russia continues to operate flights to and from Sharm el-Sheikh. The UK has changed its travel advice to urge against all but essential travel by air to the Egyptian resort. Flights between Sharm and the UK and Ireland have been suspended, stranding at least 20,000 passengers. The decision to ground flights followed a statement by the British government concluding “there is a significant possibility the crash was caused by an explosive device on board the aircraft.” British Foreign Secretary, Philip Hammond added: “We will have arrangements in place to bring people home safely at the end of their holidays. There is no need for people to leave ahead of schedule. We will not allow any UK-bound aircraft to take off from Sharm el-Sheikh until we are absolutely certain that it is safe for it to do so.” He said that a return to normal flight patterns will depend on expert analysis of the Egyptian airport, but it could take days or even weeks. Three people have died and four homes have been washed away by major flooding in the NSW town of Dungog, north-west of Newcastle. This morning, an elderly woman and two elderly men were found dead in the township, in what has been described as a "catastrophic" weather event. Premier Mike Baird said the severe weather was a "one-in-ten-year" event. A video filmed by a local showed fast-moving flood waters sweeping a home off its foundations and along a street in the town centre. The Upper Hunter town is believed to be one of the worst affected after 312mm of rain fell in 24 hours. The town has been cut off as roads and bridges were washed away, power was down and mobile phone and landlines were unresponsive. The Paterson River at Gostwyck Bridge in the nearby town of Paterson has risen to 15.51m at midday, higher than forecast and higher than the March 1978 flood peak. The Williams River at Dungog was also listed as a major flood area by the Bureau of Meteorology, at 8.53m this morning and still rising, up from a regular water level of between 0.4m and 0.6m. The east coast low is expected to pound NSW for another 12 hours before easing tomorrow morning. The SES has received more than 4500 requests for assistance. Fire & Rescue NSW crews across Sydney and the Blue Mountains, Central Coast and Newcastle areas have responded to nearly 1000 storm-related jobs since late yesterday afternoon in one of the busiest nights in the organisation’s history. The Transport Management Centre is warning people in Sydney, the Central Coast and Hunter regions not to leave home unless it is absolutely necessary. For assistance contact the SES on 132 500. Calls should only be made if there is an injury, the road is blocked or a house or car has been damaged. The SES will prioritise jobs and assist when possible. During five hours of talks in Berlin, during which it was said miracles were not expected, the four leaders at least appeared to be of one mind, that of wanting to make some progress. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said the first point must be an immediate and all inclusive ceasefire..He then went on to say November’s roadmap will give grantees for the implementation of Minsk. The 2015 Minsk agreement- originally eased fighting between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed rebels in the east of the country, but violence since then has frequently flared along a demarcation line. At the end of Wednesday’s talks Russian President Vladimir Putin went on record to confirm they had agreed to allow a wider role for a police mission from the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) to monitor the situation. Hundreds have already fled to neighbouring Senegal where president-elect Adama Barrow has been told to stay for his own safety. On Tuesday (January 17) President Jammeh declared a state of emergency. Although he initially accepted the election result he’s now claiming it was rigged and mounting a legal challenge. Since the election Jammeh has become increasingly isolated at home and abroad, and West African leaders have threatened to intervene militarily if he doesn’t stand down. The inauguration of Adama Barrow is scheduled for Thursday but there have been few signs of preparation. His aides say he’s not intimidated by the state of emergency and that he will return for his swearing-in. Background Jammeh took power in a coup in 1994 as only the second president since Gambia’s independence in 1965 and his government gained a reputation for torturing and killing perceived opponents, rights groups say. In 2015, he declared that the country was an Islamic Republic. In the December polls,Adama Barrow won 43.3% of the vote compared with Yahya Jammeh’s 39.6%. A third candidate, Mama Kandeh, got 17.1%. Gambia, one of the smallest countries in Africa, relies on tourism and one main crop, peanuts, to fuel its economy. The freedom of entry and movement applies within the passport-free Schengen area only. It is part of the package agreed two months ago with the EU to handle the migrant crisis, a reward for taking back people who fail Europe’s asylum criteria. It has also been made possible by Turkey softening its position on the longstanding issue of Cyprus, with Ankara dropping similar visa requirements for Cypriot citizens wishing to visit. Critics of the multi-billion euro migrants deal say Europe has crumbled in the face of a Turkish threat to walk away from it if the EU did not drop visa requirements. Various sources say that Turkey has not yet fulfilled all of the 72 Brussels requirements to win visa liberalisation. Barely three weeks ago one EU source said less than half the criteria had been met, but on Monday another source reported 65 had been met. No details were forthcoming about whether some criteria had been completely or partially concluded, or if the process had been eased or speeded up. Jamaica Officials are scrambling to protect the vulnerable from the worst of the coming storm. Residents have boarded windows and are stocking up on essentials in supermarkets. Evacuation operations are underway. Some have even taken refuge in a network of caves. Matthew is around 415 kilometres southeast of Kingston on Sunday evening.
