After 500 years lost at sea, explorer Vasco da Gama's Esmeralda shipwreck has been discovered, and National Geographic grantee and shipwreck hunter David Mearns is recovering the infamous ship's remarkable treasures. nn"This is the earliest pre-colonial shipwreck ever discovered. This is from the European age of discovery when Columbus, Magellan, and Vasco da Gama are going around the world," says Mearns. His company, Blue Water Recoveries Ltd., in collaboration with the Omani Ministry of Heritage and Culture, found the shipwreck off a remote Omani island in the Arabian Peninsula in 1998. After extensive logistical planning, excavation began in 2013. Spending more than 1,000 hours underwater, the team recovered over 2,800 artifacts that help tell the story of this fateful ship's journey.nn"There's coins, there's armaments, there's munitions, there's personal objects, there's organic objects. And we're bringing in archaeologists and other experts to study the entire collection, so it will ultimately be in a museum and displayed for the public in a way where you're really spelling out the entire history," Mearns says.nnThat history is monumental in its contribution to globalization. Vasco da Gama became the first European to reach India by sea, establishing the globally significant trade route Carreira da India, or India Route. The Esmeralda is believed to be part of the fleet that returned to India during da Gama's second voyage there. Da Gama later ordered his uncle, Vincente Sodré, to take a fleet of ships—including the Esmeralda—to protect Portuguese factories along the Indian coast. Sodré decided to take the squadron to loot Arab ships instead. nnSodré's fleet ended up on the Omani island of Al Hallaniyah and remained there "for quite a number of weeks, possibly two months, making repairs and things," Mearns says. "The locals who lived on the island knew the weather patterns and said, 'Listen, a storm is coming. It's best that you go to the leeward protected side of the island.' The Portuguese being quite arrogant said that, 'You know, we've got very strong iron anchors, we'll be okay.' And sure enough, the storm came and wrecked this ship and Vincente and all of his crew died."nnThe Esmeralda's colorful history continues to come to life as Mearns' team pieces together the ship's story artifact by artifact. This became an urgent story to tell as the once remote region of Al Hallaniyah began experiencing infrastructure development to support tourism. "We could actually see the road being carved through the rocky terrain and explosives were going off as we're diving. We're seeing big booms and rocks being thrown everywhere and big clouds of smoke. This road is ready to be built right to our site. Anybody could drive down and start diving around and take these artifacts," says Mearns. "That made the decision for us that the excavation had to go ahead. Without having the artifacts together as a coherent collection they start losing their meaning and their importance.” nnOne such meaningful artifact was the ship's bell, recovered in remarkably good condition for having been stuck under a boulder in the sea for over five centuries. Believed to be the oldest ship's bell ever found, it is engraved with the year 1498, which "matched the date that Vasco da Gama found the sea route to India," Mearns marvels. "I'm not Portuguese, so I can't speak for the Portuguese people, but I would say that's probably one of the most important dates in their entire history, 1498. To have that on our bell was just a stunning discovery."nnCoins may be a common object that comes to mind when thinking of shipwrecks, but Mearns' team found a coin that is anything but common. "One coin in particular, the Indio, was amazing because there's only one other one in the world. They call it the ghost coin of Don Manuel I," Mearns says of a coin commissioned by Don Manuel I for trade with India. "They were a terrific discovery and a very powerful dating device.nn"To find something, whether it's 500 years old or 200 years old, that has a great story behind it—that's what's really fantastic about the Esmeralda shipwreck. It's an important period in history. It's connected with legendary characters like Vasco da Gama and Vicente Sodré, and—let's be blunt—a brutal period of Portuguese involvement in the Indian Ocean. Then, the rapper from Harlem decided to confess to being the gunman in a cold-case murder, which led him to be sentenced to prison.nnColeman, 39, was more commonly known by his stage name, G. Dep -- short for Ghetto Dependent. So talented, he was signed in his 20s by Sean "Diddy" Combs, who performed with him in his music video, "Let's Get It."nnColeman led a self-proclaimed "gangsta" life and glorified it in rhyme, with raps like "Keep It Gangsta," which includes the lyrics, "keeping America high, and why wouldn't I / Gangstas don't talk, we beat the case and walk."nnBut that life would suck Coleman back in, and he would pay a great debt for committing a crime, betrayed by the last person anyone would have suspected -- himself.nn"That was the only way I could have been absolved," Coleman said when talking about turning himself into police. "Personal sacrifice."nnColeman dropped out of college at age 18 in search of a music career. He funded recording sessions by selling cocaine on the streets of Harlem, N.Y. He dabbled in drugs himself, and for $500, he bought a gun.nnIn fall 1993, a month before his 19th birthday, Coleman used that gun to mug a stranger, he said.nn"He was standing under the scaffolding on Park Avenue, 114th street. ... I was riding my bike," he recalled. "I told him, 'Give me the money.' ... He was kind of, you know, unresponsive."nnThen, Coleman said, the stranger started coming towards him.nn"The guy grabbed the gun, and I pulled the gun back and that's when I fired," he said. "And the guy winced and I didn't know what happened."nnColeman said he fired three times and then fled on his bike, telling no one what had happened. As he left home the next morning, the police were canvasing the neighborhood and stopped him on the street.nn"They said, 'Do you know anything about a shooting that occurred yesterday?' And I said, 'Nah,'" Coleman said. "That made me think he didn't pass away, because they said 'shooting.'"nnA week later, Coleman said, he threw the gun into the East River. He stayed quiet about the Harlem shooting for four years and poured himself into his music.nnFive years later, his talent caught the attention of Sean Combs, already one of the most powerful men in hip-hop. Coleman said he was offered a $350,000 record deal.nn"It was definitely more money that I had ever seen," he said.nnColeman had a daughter with a girlfriend. After that relationship ended, he met Crystal Sutton at a club. The long-delayed report from the Senate Intelligence Committee detailed the so-called ‘enhanced interrogation techniques’. They concluded the techniques failed to yield life-saving information, and that the CIA misled the government on the nature and extent of the methods. Costing 40 million dollars, it is the result of five years of research into six million internal CIA documents. Only a 480-page executive summary was allowed to be released after a battle between the CIA and the Senate committee. The vice-chair of the committee Senator Saxby Chambliss said that the release of the report was a mistake that could put US national security in jeopardy. Dianne Feinstein, chair of the committee said, “The CIA’s actions a decade ago are a stain on our values and our history. The release of this 500-page summary cannot remove that stain, but it can and does say to our people and the world that America is big enough to admit when it’s wrong and is confident enough to learn from its mistakes”. Among the report’s findings: i) enhanced interrogation techniques were not an effective way to gather intelligence ii) the CIA provided Congress, the White House, media and American public with inaccurate information about the programme and its effectiveness iii) CIA management was inadequate and deeply flawed iv) techniques were far more brutal than people were led to believe v) actionable intelligence that was otherwise unavailable was not obtained using these coercive interrogation techniques Republican politicians are expected to challenge the findings, two of them called the report’s release reckless and irresponsible. “Should the CIA be criticised or decorated, as former vice president Cheney has suggested? The report has sparked another nasty political fight in Washington straight along party lines. The issue whether torture directly leads to results, thus, more security, is controversial – even among experts,” explains Euronews correspondent Stefan Grobe. The US put facilities on high alert in expectation of violent fallout from the report. Governments around the world will also be worried by the revelations. A Department of Homeland Security whistleblower testified Thursday that the "retaliation" against her for probing a controversial visa program was so extensive she was told she couldn't "carry or own a personal weapon" -- a step she described as a constitutional rights violation, and just one of several ways she was punished for speaking out. nnTaylor Johnson, a senior special agent in the Homeland Security Investigations division of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, testified at a Senate hearing alongside whistleblowers from several other agencies who claim to have faced similar harassment. nnJohnson told lawmakers she ran into resistance after investigating the so-called EB-5 program, which offers visas to investors. She said she looked into the program over concerns about security risks, questioning whether visas were being approved with little scrutiny. nnBut Johnson said her managers began to hear complaints about her queries. Soon, she was removed from the investigation, and the case was closed. nnFrom there, it got worse. nnJohnson told the Senate Homeland Security Committee her "weapon and credentials" were taken, her government vehicle was confiscated, and her access to the building where she worked and government databases was revoked. nnFurther, she said, "I was told I couldn't even carry or own a personal weapon, which is a constitutional rights violation." nnFoxNews.com has reached out to ICE for comment on the allegations. nnJohnson also asserted that when a social worker tried to verify her employment, the worker was told Johnson had been terminated over a "criminal offense." nnChoking up, Johnson testified, "I almost lost my 1-year-old-child." nnShe wasn't terminated, though. She said she was "held a hostage by my own agency." nn"Agents and officers need to be valued by management, not punished, when they disclose factual and important information to our leadership," Johnson said. nnThe EB-5 program has come under criticism before, and Johnson was hardly the only official with questions about it. A recent inspector general report concluded Homeland Security Deputy Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas violated ethics rules by intervening as head of USCIS several times in EB-5 visa cases involving prominent Democrats. He has since said, "I regret the perception my own involvement created." nnBeyond Johnson's experience, Army Lt. Col. Jason Amerine also testified Thursday that he was punished after speaking out on the "dysfunctional bureaucracy" holding back efforts to free American hostages overseas. He said after he made these disclosures to Congress, the Army suspended his clearance, removed him from his job and tried to court martial him. nnA former top official in the Social Security Administration also testified on the backlash he faced. nnMichael Keegan, former associate commissioner for facilities and supply management, said he had concerns after being assigned in early 2012 to oversee a replacement computer data center, funded by $500 million in taxpayer money. nnHe said he raised the issue that while SSA was allegedly telling Congress it needed to replace its entire National Computer Center in Maryland, "at most" only part of it needed to be replaced -- specifically, the part housing the main data center. nnAfter he began raising concerns, Keegan said he was removed from his position and "left to languish in an empty office space." nn"Nothing has been shown by SSA that I deserved this retaliation," Keegan said. nnKeegan last year also blew the whistle on another controversy, claiming officials at SSA tried to hide a damning report on a $300 million computer system in order to protect President Obama's nominee to lead the agency. nnKeegan ended up retiring from SSA earlier than planned, though he says he was not financially prepared to retire. In many cases the so-called "refugees" receive more benefits, better housing and more legal protection than natives. They also face very little legal consequences for sexual harassment, theft and vandalism. Because of the refugee crisis, Germany's new Right Wing Party "Alternative for Germany" went from under 4% to 12.5% in latest polls.nnIn Islam, any woman not wearing a headscarf or not dressing modestly is considered "fair game" and is therefore free to rape. The number of rapes has increased dramatically ever since Germany has opened the flood gates to millions of young Muslim men. Police are instructed to cover up the nationality of rapists - this tower of lies collapsed after the huge scale gang sex attacks in Cologne with over 500 women being attacked simultaneously.nnMore and more reports emerge of "refugee" gang rapes of children as young as 3. I don't know a single teenage soul in the early millenium that didn't drive around (or sit in their room) blasting JoJo's "Leave (Get Out)." It was the anthem of slighted girls and boys everywhere; a ditty juxtaposed with the vocal maturity of it's performer. It was a therapeutic song in that you could scream "LEAVE!" with the conviction of Marcia Clark, yet still giggle as you recited the lyrics "to go behind my back and call my friend, boy you must have gone and bumped your head." nnPoint being that JoJo was an integral part of our lives at one point, and then, without a trace, she kind of disappeared. Now we know why — label issues that kept her from releasing new albums, and even kept her from putting our old favorites like "Too Little to Late" and "How to Touch a Girl" on Spotify and Apple Music. nnNow, at 25, JoJo has a new album on the way under a new label. Her sound is more mature — like her voice — but still catchy as hell. (Try not to dance around like a banshee to "When Love Hurts.") And while she's stopped catering to others and put on her Independent Woman badge, she admits that she actually does care about others opinions.nn"Here's something that I agreed to do that ended up messing with me psychologically," said JoJo. "I was under a lot of pressure with a company I was previously and they wanted me to lose weight fast. So they got me with a nutritionist and had me, like, on all these supplements, and I was injecting myself — this is a common thing 'the girls' do all the way — it makes your body only need certain calories, so I ate 500 calorie a day. It was the most unhealthy thing I've ever done."nnShe gained all the weight back, she said, and she felt horrible that she subscribed to a lifestyle that other people wanted her to live. "I felt like, 'if I don't do this, my album won't come out.' Which it didn't! So it's not like it even worked!" said JoJo. nnThankfully, JoJo's gotten ahold of what she wants out of her life and her career, and she doesn't feel the pressure to follow others. "I listen to other people's opinions. Listening and following are different things. I think listening and showing respect to people you respect... it works for me," said JoJo. "What you think about yourself and the decisions you make is what's most important." nnJoJo's been pushing out the new jams since late last year. On CNN’s New Day, Trump told anchor Chris Cuomo what he thought would happen if Trump goes into the Republican National Convention with a big delegate lead that was short of the 1,237 threshold, but the Republican Party chose a different candidate:nn nI think we’ll win before getting to the convention, but I can tell you, if we didn’t and if we’re 20 votes short or if we’re, you know, 100 short and we’re at 1,100 and somebody else is at 500 or 400, because we’re way ahead of everybody, I don’t think you can say that we don’t get it automatically. I think you would have riots. I think you would have riots.nn… I think you would see problems like you’ve never seen before. I think bad things would happen. I really do. I wouldn’t lead it, but I think bad things would happen.nnTrump generously allows that he won’t lead the riots, but nowhere does he appear to be discouraging them, and in fact, appears to be rationalizing for his followers. As Greg Sargent points out, his intent hardly matters:nnIt’s hard to say whether this is intended as a threat or a prediction.
