Two of the largest voices to speak out against it so far have been comedian and actor Seth Rogen and quasi-documentarian Michael Moore, who’s most well-known for how quickly he can engulf a double cheeseburger. Now, there’s a big name in Hollywood that’s quite upset. Moore took to Twitter and blasted Chris Kyle as a “coward” and attempted to discredit his story by claiming “snipers aren’t heroes,” all from behind a computer screen. Rogen on the other hand took a different approach, and rather than slam Kyle’s character, he likened the film to Nazi propaganda, more specifically the parody film that was shown in the movieInglourious Basterds.Now, keep in mind, neither of those two dimwits have even thought about stepping foot on a battlefield, and Rogen is actually a Canadian native with dual citizenship, so they’re hardly ones to speak out against a true American hero like Kyle. Before the year’s most talked-about movie “The Interview” came out, the critics had given it a mixed reception. Then came the Sony hack threats against any cinema that showed it, and its withdrawal. It looked likely it would lose Sony its 80 million dollar production and marketing budget. However since Sony backtracked and released it as video on demand on the web on Christmas Eve it has taken 15 million on the internet alone, and the 300 cinemas of its restricted release have been sold out. A wider release, perhaps to ten times that number of screens, is surely on the cards. The film has gone from being a potential black hole in the entertainment giant’s budget to box-office gold. “It’s a farce of the highest level. I would equate it to something like ‘Airplane!’ or ‘Hot Shots!’, you know?” “Overall, big dumb fun” “Super funny, super funny” “Yeah, I thought it was a great movie, it was really funny,” were just four reactions from a host of happy punters leaving one US cinema. Rarely has a film benefited from such an amount of free publicity, and like Chaplin’s “Great Dictator” years before, not even condemnation from a national government has been able to stop “The Interview”, which unlike Chaplin’s masterpiece has not suffered from appeasement or much criticism of its politics, unless it is from within North Korea. Indeed, while Kim jong un is a movie fan and is likely to have seen it, he has kept his silence. President Barack Obama chose to make freedom of speech his reason for intervening, criticising Sony for bowing to North Korean pressure. That tipped the balance, and got the cash registers ringing. “Imagine if producers and distributors and others start engaging in self censorship, because they don’t want to offend the sensibilities of somebody whose sensibilities probably need to be offended,” he said at a December 19 press conference. With publicity like that the movie would have to be a real dog to fail, and “The Interview” is no dog. It hits its admittedly soft target with ease, time and time again.   Less

Vehicles worth hundreds of thousands of euros were lent to the movie-makers by Abu Dhabi car owner Saif Alamoudi. They included a two-million dirhams (500,000 euros) Lamborghini Aventador, a Dodge Viper, priced at 700,000 dirhams (175,000 euros) and a Mercedes AMG C63 (110,000 euros). The three cars used in the film by Vim Diesel, Paul Walker (replaced by his brother after his death on November 30, 2013 while the film was under way) and Michelle Rodriguez have been on show at Sharjah’s Sahara Centre in the UAE. Speaking at the centre, Alamoudi told euronews how the “Fast and Furious” directors and his company PP-performance reached a deal. “The ‘Fast and Furious 7’ crew came to Abu Dhabi and saw the cars, and the director was persuaded to film here. We said that we were ready to give our complete support, we offered all necessary assistance, the cars, petrol, under those conditions they filmed their production in the Emirates,” he said. With government backing, the Emirates is intent on turning Abu Dhabi into a hub for the film industry. Alamoudi says he spent over half a million euros getting the “Furious 7” cars ready. The comedy film about a plot to assassinate the North Korean leader saw its launch cancelled last week after a major cyber attack and threats against US cinema-goers. The US blamed North Korea for the hacking which leaked sensitive data and unreleased film material. North Korea has denied any involvement. Fantastic Four, 20th Century Fox’s attempt to reboot the superhero team-up franchise, debuted with just $26.2 million at North American theatres over the weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. The result was bad enough that last week’s leader, Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation, held the top spot with $29.4 million in its second week. The overwhelming flop for Fantastic Four is a rare humbling for a Marvel superhero film, which often gross more than $20 million in just one night. The film has been savaged by critics and was dogged by reports of creative difficulties. Director Josh Trank even distanced himself from it Thursday in a tweet he soon-after deleted in which he alluded to studio interference: “A year ago I had a fantastic version of this,” he wrote. Fantastic Four was Fox’s attempt to revive a franchise just 10 years after its launch. But those earlier films — neither of which critics or fans much liked — opened twice as well. The 2005 original debuted with $56.1 million and the 2007 sequel, Fantastic Four: The Silver Surfer, opened with $58.1 million. The reboot, made for $120 million and with a massive marketing budget, was designed with a youthful bent, enlisting Trank (who had only 2012’s Chronicle under his belt) and a cast of Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara and Jamie Bell. A sequel, already scheduled for 2017, now seems very unlikely. “Obviously, we’re disappointed,” said Chris Aronson, head of distribution for Fox. “We’ll do a post-mortem. As we do with everything that doesn’t work out, we’ll try to figure out why and move forward.” As late as Tuesday, Fox had tracking data that suggested the opening the industry was widely expecting: about $40 million to $50 million. But the fortunes for the film seemed to turn with the unusually bad critical reaction. “The combination of less-than-desirable reviews and the power of social media conspired to suppress the opening,” Aronson said. Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for box-office tracker Rentrak, also pointed to social media’s blazingly fast spread of bad buzz. Danny Trevino, 42, is the owner of five medical-marijuana-related businesses across the state, including two in Lansing. He calls them “medical marijuana service centers.” The early morning of New Year’s Day last year, a Lansing police officer tried to pull over Trevino’s car, which had extensive damage, including a missing rear bumper, missing body panels and a missing wheel. Trevino said he rarely drinks, but he had been celebrating with friends that night. His blood-alcohol content was above 0.18. He continued driving for about 1/8 of a mile, according to his attorney, Jamie White, before finally stopping. He backed up and struck the officer’s car, breaking a headlight on the officer’s car. “That one night, I made the worst mistake of my life,” Trevino told Judge Jim Jamo today at a hearing in Ingham County Circuit Court. “I very rarely drink,” said Trevino. “That night, I screwed up.” He pleaded no contest last month to three misdemeanors, including a first-time drunken driving charge. Trevino said he pleaded no contest because he was so intoxicated, he remembers very little about the incident. A no contest plea is not an admission of guilt but is treated that way for sentencing. Jamo allowed Trevino to begin serving his sentence Friday, so he could take care of some business affairs. Los Angeles, CA - The LAPD's Topanga Area is asking for the public's help in identifying a burglary suspect, who was on surveillance video, stealing from a business in the San Fernando Valley area. Between August 31, 2015, and September 8, 2015, four separate businesses were targeted by the suspect. The suspect has been entering office buildings and removing victims' wallets and purses while they were away from their work stations. When confronted, he casually asks questions about the business and then says he is in the wrong office. One of the businesses was able to capture the suspect on surveillance video as he stole from an employee. In the footage, the suspect is clearly visible. He is described as a male, possibly of Armenian descent, with gray hair on the side of his head and bald on the top, he is approximately 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs between 180-190 pounds. He has a tattoo with cursive hand writing on his right forearm and a tattoo on his upper right arm. He has been seen wearing dark polo-type shirts and blue or black jeans. He carries a black canvas laptop bag to hide the stolen wallets and purses. A man who recently refused to comply with an internal checkpoint in Pine Valley, Calif. filmed a border patrol officer smashing his way into his vehicle while he was inside. He was then detained for over nine hours before being released without charge.When Robert Trudell of Yuma, Ariz. was stopped at the checkpoint miles from the border a few weeks ago, he refused to wind down his window and speak to the Border Patrol officials, or consent to a warrantless search of his car.Instead he picked up his camera and started photographing the agents that began to surround the vehicle. Trudell had rigged his car up with several video cameras in anticipation of passing through the checkpoint, having previously driven through it in the preceding days. Trudell is actively opposed to internal checkpoints and makes a habit of protesting them by filming his non compliance and then uploading the footage to his YouTube channel. After several minutes of refusing to comply and photographing the agents, they brought out a drug sniffing dog, which failed to turn up any narcotics. Agents then consulted the Sheriff before literally smashing through the car window, sending shards of glass towards Trudell’s face and torso. The agents then ordered Trudell to get out of his car, before putting him in handcuffs. Responding to queries on the incident from news websites and blogs, Trudell explained what happened after the cameras stopped rolling. “I was detained for 9 hours following, handcuffed for 6, fingerprinted, photographed, criminal history check, FBI Interview looked up, stripped everything but my shoelaces, ID and Credit Cards and placed on foot in El Cajon that night at 10:30. The ACLU was waiting to see if they are pursuing Criminal Charges against me before filing a Civil Suit against them.–Rob” Trudell also gave the following comments to reporters with The Blaze: “The event started in Pine Valley, California, at 12:35 in the afternoon and I was released on foot in the city of El Cajon, California at 10:30 p.m. that night by two plain clothes agents driving an unmarked black Dodge Charger,” Trudell explained. “The agents placed a brown paper bag in the parking lot which contained my shoelaces, ID and credit cards along with asset forfeiture receipts for my computers, cameras, car, phone and glasses.” He also clarified that he has not been charged with any offense that he is aware of. Trudell gave more details in answers to questions posed to him by viewers of his video: Q. What happened after? A. “I was hoping the window would be broken open. I bought a spare ahead of time. Afterward everything I had was confiscated other than ID and Credit Cards. They held my Computers, Cameras, Phone for 21 days with no sight of when I’d get it back. I was handcuffed for 6 hours of my 9 hours in Detention. I wasn’t offered a toilet for most of that time. A neighbor recording video on a cell phone during the standoff on Worthington Street Tuesday captured the moment when TACT officer Paul Hutchison was shot in the leg by the suspect. The video shows Hutchison being shot from inside the house. He is then pulled behind a vehicle to safety by a fellow officer. The officers were serving a warrant at the South Memphis home where they believed Aaron Dumas, who was wanted on attempted murder charges, was located. Before Hutchison was shot, another officer, Timothy Jackson, was also shot in the leg. Immediately after the first shooting, Dumas ran back into the house and barricaded himself inside for several hours. According to police, Dumas then set the house ablaze. He was later found dead in a bathtub. Jackson and Hutchison are both on leave as they recover from their injuries. Two other MPD officers were relieved of duty with pay after firing shots during the standoff.
