This video, for the purpose of music history and education, is a tribute to Stephen Stills' remarkable contributions and collaborations with other notable musicians in the '60s and '70s. "Church (Part Of Someone)" is from Stills' self-titled album released on November 16, 1970 on Atlantic Records. The album reached #3 on the Billboard album chart on December 5, 1970 and was certified Gold. Its first track "Love The One You're With" peaked at #14 on the Billboard singles charts and "Sit Yourself Down" went to #37. Stills composed all the songs on the album but had a number of well-known artists assist him on various tracks; Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, David Crsoby, Graham Nash, John Sebastian, Ringo Starr, Booker T. Jones, Cass Elliot, Rita Coolidge, to name a few. Stills dedicated the album to James Marshall Hendrix whom he had been close friends with prior to Hendrix's guitar work in the recording of "Old Times Good Times." Hendrix died on September 18, 1970 and therefore never heard the completed album.nnStills, born January 3, 1945, was in several start-up bands in the early 60s. When he was 19 yrs-old he joined the Au Go Go singers which was the house band at the famous Cafe Au Go Go in New York City. There he met Richie Furay, his future bandmate of Buffalo Springfield which was formed in April 1966 with Stills, Richie Furay, Dewey Martin, Bruce Palmer and Neil Young. Their first album released December 5, 1966 created the #7 Billboard hit "For What It's Worth." Their album Retrospective: The Best Of Buffalo Springfield went Platinum and remains on Top Albums Of All Time lists. nnWhen Buffalo Springfield disbanded, Stills joined with David Crosby (previously of The Byrds) and Graham Nash (previously of The Hollies) to form Crosby, Stills & Nash (CSN). CSN's first self-titled album released May 29, 1969 generated two Top 40 hits and peaked at #6 on the Billboard Top Albums chart. A Multi-Platinum record, it too remains on All-Time Great Albums lists. Later Neil Young joined CSN as Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young for their album Deja Vu released on March 11, 1970. That album spawned three Top 40 singles and ranked #14 on the Top Albums of 1970 list.nnBy the time Stills created his remarkable 1970 solo album he had also performed at three of the most iconic concerts of the late '60s: The Monterey Pop Festival (June 16-18, 1967) with Buffalo Springfield and where Jimi Hendrix had his biggest US break-out performance; the Woodstock Festival (August 15-18, 1969) with Crosby, Stills & Nash (their second live performance in front of thousands of people & with Neil Young on an acoustic version of "Mr. Soul"); and with CSN&Y at the infamous Altamont Speedway Free Concert (December 6, 1970) in California which was captured in the Rolling Stones documentary 'Gimme Shelter'. Stills is known for his diverse musical skills and influences, his lyric and arrangement compositions, as well as his ability to play guitar, piano, organ, bass, and some drums, most of which he provided on CSN's first album. Stills is currently listed as #28 on Rolling Stone magazine's 100 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time. nnBoth Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1997. Stephen Stills' work with both groups, his solo works, and his 1971-formed group Manassas have been a culmination of his superb musical talents and experience, especially at a time when so much great music in the late '60s and early '70s was exploding in many directions. At the time Queen had not yet found a permanent bassist; the group consisted of guitarist Brian May, singer Freddie Mercury and drummer Roger Taylor. In a radio special about their 1977 album News of the World, May said he had penned the lyrics thinking of them as ironic and tongue-in-cheek, but their sense was completely changed when Freddie Mercury sang them.nnThe first version of "Keep Yourself Alive" was recorded in summer 1971 at De Lane Lea Studios. It was produced by Louie Austin and includes the intro played on Brian May's Hairfred acoustic guitar. All of the song elements were already present, including call-and-response vocals by Freddie Mercury (verses) and during the break, where Roger Taylor sang a line and Mercury answered it. This demo version remains Brian May's favourite take of the song.nnSubsequently they did several attempts to "recapture the magic" when they went on to do the "real" version at Trident Studios. The one mixed by Mike Stone was the only one moderately accepted, and it's the one released as single. It includes Freddie Mercury doing all of the harmony vocals in the chorus (multi-tracking himself) and Brian May singing the "two steps nearer to my grave" line instead of Mercury (who did it live and in earlier versions). This recording does not use acoustic guitar; the printed transcription on EMI Music Publishing's Off the Record' sheet music lists at least seven electric guitar parts, one of which uses a prominent phasing effect. Although John Lennon and Paul McCartney were the band's primary songwriters, most of their albums included at least one Harrison composition, including "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", "Here Comes The Sun" and "Something", which became the Beatles' second most-covered song. Harrison's earliest musical influences included Big Bill Broonzy, George Formby and Django Reinhardt. By 1965 he had begun to lead the Beatles into folk rock through his interest in the Byrds and Bob Dylan, and towards Indian classical music through his use of the sitar on "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)". He developed an interest in the Hare Krishna movement and became an admirer of Indian culture and mysticism, introducing them to the other members of the Beatles and their Western audience by incorporating Indian instrumentation in their music. After the band's break-up in 1970, Harrison released the triple album "All Things Must Pass", from which two hit singles originated. He also organized the 1971 Concert For Bangladesh with Ravi Shankar, a precursor for later benefit concerts such as Live Aid. Take I on 25 July 1968 involved Harrison on his J-200 guitar and an overdubbed harmonium. Sessions on 16 August and 3 and 5 September included a version with a backward guitar solo (as Harrison had done for "I'm Only Sleeping" on Revolver), but Harrison was not satisfied. On 6 September 1968, during a ride from Surrey into London, Harrison asked his friend Eric Clapton to add a lead guitar solo to the song. Clapton was reluctant; he said, "Nobody ever plays on the Beatles' records"; but Harrison convinced him and Clapton's solo, using Harrison's Gibson Les Paul guitar "Lucy" (a recent gift from Clapton), was recorded that evening. Harrison later said that in addition to his solo, Clapton's presence had another effect on the band: "It made them all try a bit harder; they were all on their best behaviour." Clapton is the only three-time inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: once as a solo artist, and separately as a member of The Yardbirds and Cream. Clapton has been referred to as one of the most important and influential guitarists of all time. Clapton ranked second in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" and fourth in Gibson's Top 50 Guitarists of All Time. In the mid 1960s, Clapton departed from the Yardbirds to play blues with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. In his one-year stay with Mayall, Clapton gained the nickname "Slowhand". Immediately after leaving Mayall, Clapton formed Cream, a power trio with drummer Ginger Baker and bassist Jack Bruce in which Clapton played sustained blues improvisations and "arty, blues-based psychedelic pop." For most of the 1970s, Clapton's output bore the influence of the mellow style of J.J. Cale and the reggae of Bob Marley. His version of Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff" helped reggae reach a mass market. Their initial lineup consisted of John "Jay" Traynor, Howard Kane (né Kirschenbaum), Kenny Vance (né Rosenberg) and Sandy Deanne (né Yaguda), though their greatest success on the charts came after Traynor had been replaced as lead singer by Jay Black.nnThey were discovered while performing in student venues at New York University in the late 1950s. They auditioned for Leiber and Stoller, who gave the group its name. In the manner of the time, Leiber and Stoller wanted to extend this to "Binky Jones and the Americans," but Traynor declined to be known as Binky Jones his whole career. He instead offered up "Jay," a family nickname, and it suited everyone.nnWith Jay Traynor singing lead, they first hit the Billboard charts in 1962 with the tune "She Cried," which reached #5 (later covered by The Shangri-Las, Aerosmith, and others). The next two singles didn't fare nearly as well, and Traynor left the group. David Black (né Blatt) of "The Empires" took his place (after first agreeing to adopt the name Jay Black), and Empires' guitarist Marty Sanders (né Kupersmith) also joined. All of the members moved on to solo musical careers, with the exception of Jay Black, who continued to perform as "Jay and the Americans." With the name purchase, former members Deanne, Howard Kane, and Marty Sanders reunited, and recruited a sound-alike singer from Chicago, coincidentally nicknamed "Jay." Thus, John "Jay" Reincke became the third "Jay" and the band returned to playing both national and international music venues.
