On July 11, 2012, Gary W. Gallagher delivered a Banner Lecture entitled "More Important Than Gettysburg: The Seven Days Campaign as a Turning Point." Ever since the Civil War ended, it has been a popular pastime to look for dramatic turning points in that conflict. For many, the battle of Gettysburg represents the great event that tipped the balance toward the North. Key political, diplomatic, social, and military issues, however, were at stake in the summer of 1862 as Robert E. Lee and George B. McClellan faced off in the Seven Days Battles. Gary W. Gallagher argues that Lee's victory had a profound effect on the conflict and that perhaps the series of battles waged on the Virginia Peninsula should be regarded as a major turning point of the war. Dr. Gallagher is a professor of history at the University of Virginia. His most recent book is "The Union War." This lecture is cosponsored with the Richmond National Battlefield Park and The American Civil War Center at Historic Tredegar. (Introduction by Paul Levengood and Dave Ruth)   Less

A constant source of derision among urban planning futurists, architects, and environmentalists alike, the vague banality of suburban life has been excoriated for years by the culture class for representing the life draining, and waste producing by-product of our civilization’s greatest advances. Skateboarding, like life, as is so menacingly projected in 1993’s Jurassic Park, will find a way. It is in these island-like colonies, without the music scenes, without advantageous architectural density, and without the crews of peers that drove skating to new heights in urban environments, that some of skateboarding’s most pivotal moments transpired.nnI was a Skate Rat, is a brief meditation on the nature of how suburban nomadic skateboarders find each other, build communities - and as is often the case in adversarial environments - use every inch of their limitations and blank canvas, to breed ideas that influence the life of skateboarders every day. Forever warmly embedded in our hearts and minds, Schoolhouse Rock! sits gilded in the pantheon of radical ‘70s educational TV that revolutionized how generations learned. It forged little heroes of multiplication, helped us hook up words and phrases and clauses, and taught us how an anthropomorphic bill becomes a law. Its iconic look defined the era’s animated aesthetic, and its funky songs are so enmeshed in our collective psyche that the mere mention a title like “Three Is A Magic Number” instantly brings back a flood of tender memories. At the core of this cultural phenomenon is revered jazz cat Bob Dorough, who, after many years collaborating with the likes of Miles Davis and Blossom Dearie, penned (and often sang) a huge number of Schoolhouse Rock’s effervescent tunes. Frédéric Trin est coordinateur de combat, spécialiste en chorégraphie de combat d'escrime artistique. Après une formation de cascadeur, élève puis adjoint de Robert Heddle-Roboth, il s'est ensuite spécialisé dans l'escrime théâtrale et le spectacle vivant. Il entame une formation d’éducateur sportif en enseignement d’escrime française, obtient les diplômes fédéraux de la Fédération Française d’Escrime et enseigne dans les écoles primaires de Paris, parallèlement, il continue sa profession de cascadeur et règle des spectacles de sons et lumières pour les manifestations historiques où le combat scénique et l’escrime sont présents, on lui confie aussi des rôles dans plusieurs pièces de théâtre et spectacles de cape et d’épée. Pendant toutes ces années et jusqu’à ce jour, il est aux côtés de son maître d’armes dans l’enseignement de l’escrime artistique dans les cours réguliers, particuliers et les stages donnés à travers le monde.
