The leader visiting a region ahead of elections on September 14 to boost his party’s chances is no unusual thing, but this is Crimea, and Vladimir Putin was scheduled to begin his second day of a visit to Russia’s latest outpost with an expected major policy statement on Crimea and infrastructure projects. This is shorthand for the billions it is going to cost Russia to improve Crimea’s current drip-feed of supplies via over-extended and inadequate transport links. Yet at the last minute press agencies pulled their coverage, and Moscow then confirmed the speech was cancelled along with an extensive list of engagements and public appearances by Putin. No reason has been given for the cancellations, and there has been no statement about any further Crimean campaigning by Putin. Now severed by force from Kyiv, Crimea needs everything; water and power supplies, food and basic essentials, and it all has to come via torturous road and ferry, or air, from Russia. Some analysts said Putin may have been poised to announce a much-mooted plan, and more importantly funding for a bridge over the mouth of the Sea of Azov. Just keeping Crimea’s motor ticking over is costing Moscow dear, but then add the costs of restoring banking and insurance systems, accountancy, public administration and so on and the costs rise even higher. Crimea is unable to contribute much itself. Its major industry, tourism and health retreats, has lost its major clientele, Ukrainians, and its beaches have room to spare. This season is a dead loss. Crimeans who so enthusiastically backed Moscow’s takeover will be hoping for much from Vladimir Putin, but how much can he deliver? The Russian economy and rouble have been hit hard by market reactions to the Ukraine crisis and Western sanctions. Russia’s 2014 budget has had a coach and horses driven through it, and Crimea is the cause. However it is unlikely voters will sanction him in September even if he comes up with nothing new. Putin’s popularity means he can do no wrong, and the Ukrainian and Tatar minorities may struggle for any representation, although the latter group does have its own assembly, albeit powerless. Although spared the destruction and bloodshed being seen in eastern Ukraine, Crimea’s problems remain severe, and there is a sense among some that they will remain until Moscow achieves its ultimate prize, and Crimea will be seen for what it is; a mere stepping stone in Russia’s territorial expansion from the Black Sea to the pro-Russian Transnistria enclave on Moldova’s border with Ukraine. Cerminara had allegedly been following Muslim women around, taking pictures of them and posting the images on the ADL’s Facebook page, where he and other members wrote insulting things about them. “I’m going to continue photographing all your women, and your f---en men (if you call them men, I call them gutless cowards), but I’m going to continue doing it,” Cerminara boasted in his You Tube video.And there’s nothing you guys can do about it. Inside the dead of night, Ukrainian troops and Russian-backed rebel forces on Friday exchanged 67 prisoners who were captured during fighting in eastern Ukraine, section of a cease-fire deal which has struggled to achieve success. The transfer took place at midnight outside of the most rebel stronghold of Donetsk beneath the watch of international observers. Thirty-six Ukrainian servicemen were released after negotiations, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said. Ukrainian forces handed over 31 pro-Russian rebels detained within the five-month conflict, a few of them Russian citizens. The cease-fire took effect every week ago but has also been routinely violated. Shortly later on prisoner exchange, a volley of rocket fire was heard in Donetsk. The Ukrainian servicemen were driven from the local rebel headquarters around 1 : 30 a. m. and taken several miles north of Donetsk, where these folks were met by Ukrainian military officials. The 2 sets of captives were brought out wearing handcuffs, which were removed as these folks were handed over. One representative from each side checked each prisoner against a listing and crossed out their name as these folks were freed. " It comes with an ongoing process of talks. We're meeting each other's demands and fulfilling our promises, " said Yuriy Tandit, a negotiator for the govt. Darya Morozova, who will be overseeing the prisoner exchange for that separatists, said she estimates around 1, 200 rebels and the supporters are now being detained by Ukrainian authorities. She said the rebels were holding several hundred Ukrainian troops, however when asked for the exact figure, she would only say it was eventually " as much as 1, 000 " people. Morozova claimed the rebel prisoners were poorly treated and a few had not been fed for around two weeks. Another transfer of prisoners is predicted inside the next three days, she said. Economic sanctions are one way that the European Union and the United States hope to get the Kremlin to stop backing pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine. But they are double-edged: some say they are hitting those that do business in Russia too hard. Many companies, particularly in Europe, have said they will keep their trade links with Russia as much as possible. More than 6,000 German firms are active there, with the likes of Volkswagen, Daimler and BMW feeling the effects already. Business leaders have been lobbying governments, asking them to tone down or limit the sanctions. But it is important to remember that they are targeted – with energy, defence and finance at the top of the list, which means plenty of companies can continue doing business in Russia, if they are careful. Euronews spoke to Sergej Sumlenny, with Russia Consulting, which helps German businesses in the Russian market. Natalia Marshalkovich, euronews: “Tell us, with sanctions getting tougher, what should Western companies do if they still want to work in Russia?” Sergej Sumlenny: “If a Western company wants to continue business in Russia, it has to follow a few very simple steps, first of all checking out all its contacts. As you know, the American and European sanctions ban any business contact with companies on the sanctions list, as well as their subsidiaries (if they control 50 percent of the shares or more). A foreign company in Russia has to check the ownership structure of each company it is dealing with — suppliers, customers, partners, etc — and see if they are directly or indirectly linked to the blacklist.” euronews: “I suppose that means Western companies have to really change the way they work under the sanctions. Do you see business quitting the Russian market because of that?” Sumlenny: “Obviously, this concerns the companies operating in the sectors most affected by the sanctions. For instance, the German companies that supply military equipment or dual-use equipment, or, for example, oil extraction technologies — all these areas are under sanctions now. Companies need to revise their work format and decide if they want to stay in Russia. “But it should be clear that all the affected sectors represent a relatively small number of companies. In general, most German companies in Russia sell machine tools or provide services. They are not directly affected by the sanctions. They’re still working, but they definitely need to check out all their business relations. “In general, German and European companies are continuing to work in Russia because it is still an attractive market for them. Certainly this spiral of sanctions is unbalancing business strategies somewhat. We know that a large number of companies have already frozen their investment projects in Russia, companies are trying to put their money on hold. “But they’re keeping their long-term plans. For example, most German companies in Russia are medium-sized. Around 6,000 German companies are working in Russia now, so their plans are long-term plans, not for a few months or a year; their strategy is designed for several years or even decades. And with a long-term vision these companies are going to stay in Russia.” euronews: “European sanctions have provoked Russian government so-called counter-sanctions. How might this affect Europeans’ willingness to stay in this market?” Sumlenny: “Sanctions always provoke a response. We’re in a situation that threatens to become a vicious cycle of sanctions. The Russian authorities have already said they’ll respond to European sanctions. If Europe in turn — the EU — imposes more sanctions, the situation would become even more difficult for companies. Business would get very uncomfortable if sanctions begin to spread, creating more and more problems with investment.” Less

Dauphin County prosecutors said that 23-year-old Craig Everette was justified in shooting and killing Todd Eugene Taylor when the man broke into Everette’s home and tried to kill his aunt and her boyfriend, according to WHTM. “Mr. Everette’s actions in shooting Mr. Taylor were entirely justified under Pennsylvania law. He was certainly entitled to defend others present in that home,” Ed Marsico said, according toPennLive. 60-year-old Taylor went to the home of his estranged wife, who is Everette’s aunt, to confront her new boyfriend, Lawrence Gaul. Armed with a shotgun and a pair of handguns, Taylor began firing shots outside the house while yelling for Gaul to come out. He then broke into the home and fired through a bathroom door, wounding Gaul as he and his girlfriend tried to take cover. He then went back outside to reload the shotgun and went back into the home, firing through the door again. Everette and his girlfriend had fled out the back door when Taylor had initially started shooting. However, rather than run away, he was merely trying to get an angle on the murderous psycho. The combat veteran grabbed his own shotgun and flanked Taylor, confronting him in the upstairs hallway of the home where he shot and killed him. Everette then disarmed Taylor and waited for police to arrive. “Everette knew his aunt and Gaul were in imminent danger of death or serious bodily injury,” Marsico said. “He saved the lives of the individuals who were holed up in that bathroom.” Gaul was treated for a gunshot wound to the upper arm then released. This just goes to show you that the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is to have a good guy with a gun intervene.
