Ukrainian public opinion on NATO membership remained low, according to numerous independent polls conducted between 2005 and 2013. Just months before the start of the revolution in Ukraine and Russia’s annexation of Crimea just over 50% of Ukrainians were against joining NATO and only 40% supported the idea of Alliance membership. However, opinion changed once Moscow had taken Crimea and hostilities flared in eastern Ukraine with over 50% of Ukrainians in favour of NATO membership while just 43% said they were against it. “When Ukraine-Russia relations turned more and more complicated and the people, who thought Russia was a friendly country, with a friendly policy, changed their minds, the situation changed,” explained Valeriy Khmelko, President of Kyiv International Institute of Sociology. NATO-Ukraine relations formally began in 1991, when Kyiv joined the North Atlantic Cooperation Council. After the“Orange Revolution” in Ukraine, newly elected President Viktor Yushchenko was invited to the NATO summit several times. The Ukrainian government (with Yulia Tymoshenko as prime-minister) had hoped that Ukraine would join the NATO Membership Action Plan at the Bucharest Summit in 2008 but it wasn’t to be. “The official version from the countries that didn’t back Ukraine in the Membership Action Plan was that the Ukrainian people didn’t support it. And that was the case because at that time only 17-20% of Ukrainians supported the idea of joining NATO,” said former Ukrainian Prime Minister, Yulia Tymoshenko. In 2010, Viktor Yanukovych became president and introduced a law of neutrality, which doesn’t permit Kyiv to seek membership of any military-political alliances. Oleksandr Sushko, Research director of the Institute for Euro-Atlantic Cooperation explains: “There was a hope that non-alignment would serve as “payment” to Russia, it would appease Moscow, and Russia would recognise Ukraine as a state, including its borders and territorial integrity. However, we have seen that that wasn’t the case and naive of Ukraine to believe so,” Ukraine’s decision to change its status and no longer declare itself neutral places the country in the same position it held in 2010. Relations between the US and Venezuela have taken a new turn, as President Nicolas Maduro announced he will limit the number of US diplomats in the country and establish visa fees. He said the move was necessary due American ‘meddling’ in the nation’s affairs. It comes after his government detained US citizens, inlcuding a pilot, on suspicion of espionage. Speaking at what he called the Great Anti-imperialist March in the capital Caracas he said, “I’ve ordered the Foreign Minister to immediately process, in accordance with Article 11.1 of the Vienna Convention, to review, reduce, adjust and limit the number of U.S. officials at the embassy in Venezuela.” The president said that the US had 100 diplomatic staff working in the country in comparison with Venezuela’s 17 based in America. He also slapped a ban on George W Bush and Dick Cheney from entering the country, calling them ‘terrorists’. Maduro has renewed accusations that the US is seeking to oust him from power. The allegations were dismissed by the White House. The opposition say Maduro is creating a smokescreen to distract from the country’s economic woes in the wake of tumbling oil prices. As he spoke in Caracas, an anti-government rally attracted thousands of protesters in San Cristobal to call for justice for a 14-year-old boy who was shot dead at a protest on Tuesday. The United Kingdom's National Crime Agency (NCA) has arrested 56 suspected hackers in a campaign against cybercrime called "strike week." Law-enforcement officials conducted, in total, 25 separate operations across England, Scotland and Wales, and those arrested were suspected in a wide range of cyber crimes including: Network intrusion and data theft from multinational companies and government agenciesDistributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacksCyber-enabled fraudMalicious software and virus developmentThe raids conducted by NCA were coordinated by its National Cyber Crime Unit (NCCU), special officers Metropolitan Police and Regional Organised Crime Unit's (ROCUs), associated with local forces around the UK. The arrested hackers also include alleged hackers suspected of being behind attacks on Yahoo, the US Department of Defence (DoD), and PlayStation. The list of hackers arrested in the operation is given below: A 23-year-old man was allegedly responsible for breaching a satellite communications system used by the US Department of Defense. The hacker accessed 'non-confidential contact information' of almost 800 users, including name, title, e-mail addresses and phone numbers and gained control over information from 34,400 devices, including IMEI numbers.Another 21-year-old London man was arrested who is suspected of being an alleged member of the D33ds Company hacking collective, the group that hacked into Yahoo in 2012 and posted as many as 450,000 email addresses and passwords online.[*]An alleged member of the Lizard Squad, the infamous hacking group which claimed the responsibility for taking down the Xbox Live and PlayStation networks over Christmas, was arrested in Leeds, Yorkshire, BBC reports. We are continuously working to track down and apprehend those seeking to utilise computers for criminal ends, and to disrupt the technical networks and infrastructures supporting international cyber crime." This is't first time when law-enforcement agencies have conducted such massive raids in cyber crimes cases. Last year, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) also conducted a massive raids in Europe and Australia, and arrested more than 100 customers of Blackshades Remote Administration Tool (RAT) malware. Blackshades and other malware like it allows hackers to remotely control victims' computers, turning on webcams, stealing usernames and passwords for email and Web services, personal information, and launching further attacks on other computers, without the knowledge of the computer owner. The malicious program modifies itself in such a way that it evade detection from the computer's antivirus software. Blackshades has been sold via PayPal and underground forums since at least 2010, which cost as little as $40. However, the recent raids carried out by NCA didn't just target hackers behind well-known attacks or specific cyber crime. Instead it has arrested hackers behind phishing attacks, malware, and also companies that offered web hosting to known criminals. 'Strike week' also suggests that the agencies was monitoring each and every activity of cyber crimes as well as hackers and collecting strong evidences against them.
