The family of John Berry, a 29-year-old man killed by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in Lakewood, CA, have released video footage of the fatal shooting. Berry reportedly failed to take medication for an undisclosed condition. Los Angeles County Sheriffs were responding to a call about a man “acting strangely”. “When deputies got here, the suspect actually drove in the direction of one of the deputies and collided with the first deputy that arrived,” Homicide Lt. Eddie Hernandez told reporters. Deputies used different levels of non-lethal force attempting to subdue him, “However, at one point the suspect crushed a deputy between his car and one of the radio cars,” Hernandez said. “The deputy’s legs were crushed. Fearing for the deputy’s safety, deputies opened fire and struck the suspect. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.” Update* Deputy Involved Shooting, 7/6/15, 5500 blk Adenmoor Ave, Lakewood The investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department into this incident is ongoing. We are in possession of a video filmed by a witness and it is included in the investigation. The video, while it shows only a portion of the incident, is consistent with other information developed during the investigation. The incident began when deputies responded to a call of a person acting erratically. As deputies arrived, the suspect drove his vehicle head on into a responding sheriff’s patrol car. As deputies attempted to remove the suspect from his vehicle, he continued his attempts to operate the vehicle, placing at least one deputy’s life in immediate danger. That is when the shooting occurred. Whenever a Deputy Involved Shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies and it results in the fatality of a suspect, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene. These include separate investigations by the Office of the Los Angeles County District Attorney and Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner – Coroner, in addition to investigations by Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau. Police, on the other hand, said the recordings illustrate the "tremendous restraint" used by officers in a volatile situation.Clinton Section Capt. Korey Brown said the incident began when officers went to Grafton Street off Portland Avenue looking for a man police had been told threatened his girlfriend with a gun.There they found a man who matched the suspect's description and attempted to interview him, but he refused to identify himself or talk with officers. That man, who later identified himself to a reporter as Daryl Appleberry, is the brother of the man police were looking for, Brown said.Officers handcuffed Appleberry without a struggle while his sister recorded the event on her mobile phone. Meanwhile, as officers were talking with Appleberry, his neighbor, Scean Gordon, also recorded the incident on his own phone. In Gordon's video, officers ask Gordon to back up, and get out of the road when a car is coming down the road. Gordon swears loudly at officers, uses racial names, and tells them he has no obligation to listen to them and tells Appleberry he has no obligation to cooperate with officers.A second video taken by Appleberry's sister, shows officers pulling away with Appleberry in their car. Gordon, police said, at that time is standing in front of the police cruiser. The video shows the cruiser travel just a few feet, then the driver's side door opens and an officer exits. As he walks to the front of the car, Gordon appears in the screen.The officer says "you're under arrest" and reaches for Gordon, who evades him and begins to run. The officer and Gordon struggle and other officers join the arrest, pinning Gordon down and using pepper spray to subdue him. Appleberry said officers also used a Taser on Gordon but the videos do not show that, and police said it did not happen.Brown said his officers showed restraint throughout the arrest while several people were screaming at them while they did their investigation. Estimates varied from tens of thousands to the one million figure put forward by organisers. Italy is the last major country in Western Europe not to have offered rights or recognition to same- sex couples. Those taking part in the giant gathering want things to stay that way. “I think the kids’ rights should come first, before the rights of adults who are free to do whatever they want,” one young woman said. “It is a fact. Nature dictates that a baby comes from a man and a woman.” Showing how polarised the nation is, Saturday’s rally came a week after thousands of people took to the streets of Italy to demand that the “civil union” bill, which relates to both homosexual and heterosexual couples, be approved. The bill under discussion was presented to parliament last week and is due to be voted on next month. As well as opposition on the streets, the government itself is deeply divided over the issue and opponents in the heavily Roman Catholic country hope they can sink it, as they have done in the past.
