US military aircraft conducted an airstrike on Friday against Islamic State artillery used against Kurdish forces defending the city of Arbil, Iraq, near US personnel, a Pentagon spokesman said. Two F/A-18 aircraft dropped 500-pound laser-guided bombs on a mobile artillery piece near Arbil, Pentagon press secretary Rear Admiral John Kirby said in a statement. He said the Islamic rebels had been using the artillery to shell Kurdish forces defending Arbil where US personnel are located. “The decision to strike was made by the US Central Command commander under authorization granted him by the commander in chief,” he said. On Thursday US President Barack Obama authorised air strikes on Iraq to protect Christians and avert “a potential act of genocide” of tens of thousands of members of the ancient Yazidi sect who have taken refuge on a desert mountaintop from Islamic State forces. The United States has also begun dropping relief supplies to the refugees. Sunni fighters from the Islamic State, an al Qaeda offshoot bent on establishing a caliphate and eradicating unbelievers, have swept through northern Iraq since June. The US has dropped relief supplies to thousands of Iraqis hiding in a mountainous area from Islamist militants who had ordered them to convert or die. The move comes as the United States carried out fresh attacks on fighters from the Islamic State, who have advanced within a half an hour of Irbil, Iraq’s Kurdish capital. The city is a hub for US oil companies. The Sunni militants, who also control a third of neighbouring Syria, have taken control of several cities as well as the country’s largest dam. It’s been reported that the Iraqi government has provided arms to Kurdish fighters in an unprecedented act of cooperation between Baghdad and Arbil. “This is not a classical war. This is not a frontal war with a regular army. They are attacking with small numbers, with mobile forces, with speed. They are not holding territory,” said Hoshiar Mahmoud al-Zibari, Iraq’s Foreign Minister. The Islamic State, formerly known as ISIS, have reportedly said the US strikes would have “no impact” on them. The group led by led by Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi, have used savage violence during their advancement through Iraq, beheading and crucifying captives in their mission to eradicate the country of unbelievers. We are proud that he left an army that could protect this nation from all its enemies,” said one man. Some Egyptians, who lived through three decades of autocracy under the now 86-year-old, believe the 2011 uprising marked a new beginning for the country. “I am against erasing the January 25 revolution. This can never happen in Egypt’s history. It is what opened the door for us to speak to you and for me to tell you my opinion on complete freedom,” explained another man. The German interior minister Thomas de Maiziere said people who enter Italy without legal permission must be registered and have their fingerprints taken there. That would be a huge undertaking for Italy where, during the summer season, thousands of migrants arrive every day. Speaking after a meeting with his German counterpart, Italy’s interior minister Angelino Alfano said: “The initiative implemented with France and the other countries that want to be part of this operation is directed towards fighting human trafficking. This joint initiative will prevent the risk that countries will turn against each other when faced with a severe crisis.” Thousands of people have fled conflicts in Syria, Iraq and across the Middle East and Africa. Although alliance-led military action is unlikely, it is thought that NATO could revive a training mission for Iraqi armed forces that ended in 2011. Several member states including the US and Britain have sent military equipment to Kurdish forces fighting jihadists and other European countries could provide intelligence and other support. The issue is due to be discussed at a meeting of NATO’s principal political decision-making body The North Atlantic Council on Friday. British Prime Minister David Cameron said a range of options were on the table to ensure the extremist group is blocked. “What is required is action on the ground, from the Kurds, from the new Iraqi government, from the neighbouring states, all that pressure being applied and then yes of course there is a role that countries like Britain and America and others can play; we’re already playing that role, we’re arming the Kurds, we’re helping the Iraqi government, we’re flying missions over Iraq, we’re supplying humanitarian aid. The Americans have been taking part in air strikes, which we support, all those things need to go together,” he said. As NATO operations in Afghanistan prepare to wind down later this year, leaders released a declaration promising future support to the country against the threat from terrorists. NATO leaders also made it clear they won’t use force to defend Ukraine from Russian “aggression” but on Thursday vowed to apply tougher economic sanctions on Moscow. Western leaders are cautious about Kremlin talk of an imminent ceasefire in the five-month old conflict in eastern Ukraine, which could be confirmed on Friday. It means the end of US dependence on Russia whose Soyuz vehicles replaced the retired space shuttles in 2011. NASA spokesperson Charles F. Bolden jr. : “By combining private sector ingenuity with bipartisan national commitment and the unmatched expertise of NASA we are not only better able to stretch the boundaries of the possible, we’re strengthening our economy and creating good jobs for our people.” That said the multi-billion dollar contract has also taken on a new urgency since relations between Washington and Moscow have become strained over the crisis in Ukraine. Washington also says it is a question of cost: The price per flight now being charged by Moscow is $70m (54m euros) a seat which it says is excessive.
