Anti-poverty campaigners gathered in Munich on Friday, holding balloons depicting the world’s most powerful leaders and calling on a G7 summit due Sunday in the region to yield more than just hot air. Over 30,000 activists have been rallying in the Bavarian capital since Thursday, urging leaders to take real action on the world’s most pressing issues – from poverty to climate change and the wars in Ukraine and Syria. “At the end of the day, the G7 countries must be held accountable. We don’t want the summit to turn into a nightmare for the poor, we want strong commitments and bold announcements in the fight against extreme poverty,” said Tobias Kahler, director of the anti-poverty campaign ONE Germany. Some 600 activists have meanwhile set up camp in the mountain resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a few kilometers away from the castle of Elmau where the G7 summit will be held Sunday and Monday. “Locals come over everyday and bring us cake, chat and drink beer with us in the evening,” said Benjamin Ruß, an anti-G7 militant. “Everything is fine. There is absolutely no reason to be afraid. It’s all very relaxed.” Several hundred demonstrators marched across the town on Friday – overall peacefully, though there were some scuffles on the sidelines. More than 22,000 police have been deployed in the area to secure the event. Less

Pope Francis has celebrated his first ever Mass in the United States on a day which saw him refuse to shy away from controversy. Twenty-five thousand people gathered outside Washington’s Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception as the pontiff canonised America’s first ever saint the 18th century Spanish missionary Friar Junipero Serra.. It delighted Latino churchgoers but Native American groups accuse Serra of wiping out indigenous cultures. . Pontifex will speak directly to Americans today as thousands gather in shadow of Washington Monument. http://t.co/Woo3IVXtob— CNN Breaking News (cnnbrk) September 23, 2015 Earlier Pope Francis had been welcomed at the White House by President Barack Obama and his family. During his first direct address to the nation the Pope touched on issues such as immigration – calling himself the son of an immigrant – and lauded the president’s efforts to protect the environment. “Accepting the urgency, it seems clear to me also that “climate change“http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/sep/23/pope-francis-climate-change-white-house-speech is a problem we can no longer be left to our future generation,” he said. It all went down well with the White House audience but other Americans have said the Pope is staying too far from his religious brief. Our correspondent Stefan Grobe summed up the day: “The pontiff’s visit has not escaped the nasty divisions of political Washington. Democrats believe they now have a pope who is on their side on hot topics like Iran, Cuba, climate change and economics – which makes Republicans angry. The perfect setting for the papal address before Congress this Thursday.” The Pope arrived in the US on Tuesday (September 22) After Washington DC he will visit New York and Philadelphia. Less

Westland, MI - Video from a Tim Horton's on Wayne Road in Westland shows an employee throw scalding hot coffee on a customer. The angry employee then waits for the customer to go back to the drive-thru window and more coffee is thrown -- this time a cold cup of coffee thrown by the customer. The employee also is shown throwing another cup of hot coffee and Tim Bits donut holes at the customer. Moreover, the employee appears to spit at the customer. This all went down on Oct. 27. The customer told Local 4 he contacted Tim Horton's about the incident but has not received a response. Now he is responding with an attorney. "It's a felonious assault. He threw hot coffee, it struck him in the face. Not happy about it. No one should have coffee thrown on their face," said attorney Majed Moughni, who is representing the customer. The customer said he asked a female employee to toss out his old cup of Tim Horton's coffee which he had in his car. She refused to do that and from there things got heated. The video shows her hand him the fresh cup of coffee but he refused it.As the customer drove away, a 19-year-old male employee started throwing hot coffee. The irate employee is shown screaming through the drive-thru window. That's when, according to the customer, the employee started screaming racial slurs. The customer did throw cold coffee back at the employee. He also appears in the video to spit on the employees. Tim Horton's released this statement on the incident: "Guest safety is of paramount concern to Tim Horton's. We were aware of the incident in October and the franchisee has taken the appropriate steps to address the matter." Less

Albuquerque, NM - A man has been arrested on felony child abuse charges after police say he left his 2-month-old in a hot car while he was at a southeast Albuquerque plasma center. Isaac Chacon, 32, was arrested Wednesday and booked into the county jail. Officers were called to reports of a baby who was left in a car in a parking lot at 204 San Mateo SE, near Central and San Mateo, around 1:45 p.m. Wednesday. When police arrived, two women had opened the car doors and officers could see a 2-month-old sitting in a car seat in the back seat. “(The baby) was crying loudly and had white build up on the sides of his mouth,” an officer wrote in the police report on the incident. It was 76 degrees outside at the time, according to the report. When paramedics arrived, they found the baby’s temperature was 101.7 and he appeared dehydrated. They took him to the hospital. The child’s father, Chacon, walked out of a nearby plasma center after the ambulance arrived and told officers he had been “in and out real quick,” according to the report. But a plasma center employee said Chacon went in at 12:15 p.m., leaving the baby in the car for an hour and a half. Less

Russian adventurer Fedor Konyukhov has landed safely in West Australia after setting a new world record for circumnavigating the world solo in a hot air balloon. The 64-year-old emerged after spending more than 11 days in the air and expressed his appreciation for the smell of earth, saying “how wonderful it is.” Konyukhov smashed the previous record of 13-and-a-half days, set in 2002 by the late Steve Fossett. #FedorKonyukhov suffered a slight cut to his face during the landing but otherwise home safe and sound perthnow pic.twitter.com/QDmkousjBW— Dani Le Messurier (danilemess) 23 July 2016 During the journey, the Russian balloonist flew as high as 10,000 metres and dealt with extreme temperatures – as low as 56 degrees Celsius that caused his oxygen masks and drinking water to freeze. Konyukhov embarked on his epic journey from Northam in Western Australia on 12 July and set the record of just over 11 days when he passed above the township 100 kilometres northeast of Perth. Mind boggling that #FedorKonyukhov flew back over the EXACT spot on planet Earth that he took off from! pic.twitter.com/JN2w8Pvr3x— Peter Doherty (@PeterDoherty7) 23 July 2016 Less
