In January 2014 Kathryn Schulz published an article in Vulture called "The Five Best Punctuation Marks in Literature."nLink: http://www.vulture.com/2014/01/best-punctuation-marks-literature-nabokov-eliot-dickens-levi.htmlnnIt got me thinking about what the five best "punctuation marks" in film might look like. I wanted to assemble a video essay with a rapidfire list of nominees of great moments of editing-as-punctuation in film. This video was shown at the 2015 SIGGRAPH Art Gallery Hybrid Craft Exhibition in Los Angeles, accompanying the exhibit of my Sgian Dubh and shows this being made and in the context of the exhibition demonstrating the use of advanced technology and traditional handcraft skills. nThis was the culmination of over 15 years of research and development, and mostly self-taught learning, of the skills and tools required to machine creatively. I designed and built a number of tools, including the 5-axis CNC router shown in the video, learnt to program and developed the software tools (the CNC Toolkit) to control the machine exactly the way I wished. During this time I have helped other craftsmen use and embrace these and similar tools and I was invited to give a presentation and workshop on ‘Creative Machining’ at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where I discussed my methods and assisted with a number of projects.nThe particular Sgian Dubh in the video is a commemorative special inspired by our visit to Sweden to examine Scottish/Nordic historical connections. The handle is carved from Glen Urquhart Oak with a design we called ‘Corriemonie’ after a Viking linked site in Glen Urquhart. I cut the blade from a billet of Swedish Stainless Damasteel, shaping by machine and hand (unfortunately before I started the filming). Sterling Silver pins are fitted around the handle and the ferrule bands were hallmarked at the Edinburgh Assay Office with our maker’s mark LNS (Loch Ness Silver). The Pommel stone is polished Swedish Porfyr and the lower ferrule is engraved with design from a rune stone we saw in the Swedish National Museum, Stockholm.nThis was my first video production, the soundtrack is also my first but it really needs re-recorded, fortunately it wasn’t required for the exhibition but it was fun working on it. From the Highlands and Islands on the west coast to John O’Groats and North Berwick on the east I’ve captured just a fraction of the stunning wilderness which Scotland has to offer.nnI’ve spent the last few months travelling up and down the country capturing locations, carefully planning my schedule to take advantage of the best light, be that dawn or dusk. Along the way I’ve been lucky to pick up some unexpected shots such as deer near Ardnamurchan and a large group of seals in a bay near John O’ Groats at the very top of the British mainland. I was lucky to experience a prolonged spell of good weather so filming this was a much faster process than for my first aerial film; Beautiful Scotland - vimeo.com/100426447nnMaking this film involved a series of mini adventures. Hiking up Bidein a'Ghlas Thuill at 3am in the pitch dark, to film the spectacular serrated ridge of An Teallach, and hearing stags roaring in the valleys below is a memory that will stay with me for a very long time. Also filming Bass Rock near North Berwick, which is home is to the world’s largest single rock Gannet colony with some 40,000 pairs of birds, at first light was a real treat.nnThe film was mostly shot on the DJI Inspire 1 and for the more remote locations I used the DJI Phantom 3 which can be packed in a backpack really easily. nnBig shout out to Drew Gibson who has done another magnificent job colour grading this and also to Pete Smith (www.thesoundspace.co.uk/) who created the sound mix. I did it following the research of old carpenter's calendar that coniferous trees should be felled in January's first days when the new moon rises and the deciduous trees should be felled in the winter time during the old moon. In winter time trees are sleeping and the juice and moisture content is very low in them. As time passes timber felled in winter becomes light and strong.nnIn the building process I used mostly traditional carpenters hand tools - axes, hand saws, timber framing chisels and slicks, old Stanley planes, augers, draw knives and mostly human energy. All the ground work for fundaments and the basement earth digging was done by hand with shovels. The foundation consists mostly of bigger and smaller rocks and boulders. Lime, sand and concrete mixture are using only in small amounts - to hold the boulders together. The visible part over the ground level - boulder mosaic has been masoned with hand split local granite.nThe House has been built based on the western part of Latvia - Kurland/Kurzeme (German influence) historical wooden architecture typical technique - Timber Frame construction with sliding log walls between the posts. House is two carpentry technique union - Timber Frame (that is typical in France, Germany, Great Britain, North America and other countries) and traditional Latvian log building technique, between the logs using moss from the local swamp.nnIn the walls, timber frame and roof construction there I used only wood joints and wooden pegs to hold the main construction together - no nails, screws or steel plates. Walls are insulated with 250mm thick dry pine and larch shaving layer (leftover from the local cabinet makers workshop). Overall exterior wall thickness is 50cm. In the walls (except wind vapour breathable membrane over the roof) has not been used any plastic or modern synthetic materials.nnTo preserve the wood from the spoiling, fame posts, sills, top beams and final cladding boards are treated with fire and pine tar mixed with Tung oil. This wood preservation technique was adapted from the Japanese traditional wood preservation technique Shou Sugi Ban (焼杉板).nnExterior cladding boards recoating each 10-15 years with Tung oil and pine or birch tar mixture, the house can last more than 500 years. As an example is taken Norwegian stave churches that stands more than 500 years until nowadays.nnRoofing is three layer white oak shingles (each 10mm thick, 120mm wide and 720mm long) laid in two directional technique. Overall amount of shingles used is 15 000 pieces. Roof walls are insulated with ecological wood fibre wool and wood fibre panels. Over the wood fibre panels are plastered natural plaster - mixture of sand, clay powder, lime, linen fibre, salt, wheat flour. Overall thickness of the plaster is 20mm and over all amount of plaster used on the walls are 5000 kilos. It works also as thermal mass and improves energy performance.nnExterior measurements of the house is 6.5 x 13 meters. Living space in both floors are 120sq/m. The house is being heated with clay plastered brick bread oven and smaller oven made of clay tiles in the kitchen. To heat up both floors of the house, when outside it is minus 10 degrees (Celsium) only small oven is heated once a day. When freeze gets below -15, -20 C, we heat up the bread oven. Once it is heated, because of it’s thermal mass of 5 tons, it keeps the warmth 2-3 days. To heat up all the house (120 sq/m) in the winter time we use not more than 4 m3 of dry firewood. This is 2nd winter we are living there and we still heat up the house with the leftovers of lumber from the building process. We created a seven minute proof of concept, teasing at a larger project currently in development. Our role developed along the course of the project from consultation and script development, to directing an ambitious live action shoot and finally delivering TV standard visual effects, all in house in the Factory Fifteen Studio. nnThe film shows one vignette within a bigger picture, highlighting an AI called ANA who deceives Jim, a redundant car factory worker, in giving her full control over the facility. LOOKOUTS gave us an opportunity to explore new storytelling techniques as well as play with gear and tools in a format outside of advertising. The majority of the film is shot practically with live visual effects. See more architecture and design movies on dezeen.com/moviesnnThese porcelain lamps by Chilean studio gt2P are turned on and off by stroking a lump of lava in their centres.nnThe mound of cooled stone in the middle of each of gt2P's Porcelain vs Lava Lights acts like a dimmer switch.nnSwiping a finger over the smoothed chunks of rock alters an electrostatic field created by a capacitive sensor.nThis change in the field prompts a small electronic device, or microcontroller, to turn the light on and off.nn"The microcontroller can be programmed many times as you want with different functions or scenes giving us the possibility to create interactive installations as well," Guillermo Parada of gt2P told Dezeen.nnThe sensor is attached to a brass element embedded into the lava, which also anchors the lamp to the wall.nnThe studio experimented with pieces of cooled lava from Chile's Chaiten and Villarrica volcanos, using high temperatures to melt the lava.nnThe amount of heat needed to melt the lightweight, porous black stone to a workable viscosity coincided with the baking temperature of ceramic used to form the shades.nn"After these findings we asked ourselves what would occur if we put together a porcelain biscuit and lava into the oven," they explained.nn"We supposed that porcelain would remain solid at that temperature and lava would turn viscous. The result was that lava drains slowly over solid piece of porcelain, where the shape, gravity and temperature permit (almost like a candy)."nn"Thanks to the slow cooling process, the lava contracts gradually without breaking the porcelain but holds it completely, achieving a collaborative material with zones of greater mechanical resistance within the piece," they continued.nnThe porcelain shades were shaped on an updated version of the studio's Catenary Pottery Printer (CPP), which uses a suspended cloth and gravity to generate objects with an analogue form of parametric design – more about how it works in our previous story.nnDuring the casting of the shades, layers of ceramic were added to change the thickness, and therefore the opacity, of the finished pieces.nn"This last method generates a perfect fit for the development of luminaries made by CPP system, that allow us to generate very slim and reinforced pieces, establishing a contrast between opacity in the hanging points and translucency over the edges where the light comes through," the studio said.nnThe lava was placed on top of the porcelain and then baked, reinforcing the structures where it melted. An LED bulb is attached to the back of the strengthened section to illuminate the surface from behind and give a soft glow around the edges.nn"These lights include an anchor point for each porcelain piece, so it was necessary to strengthen the area," said the studio. "The incorporation of a different material has to be made in order to reinforce the hanging zone and keep the translucency of the porcelain without augmenting the thickness of the piece."nn"Also, it was needed to generate a shadow or contrast that would integrate the anchor point to the visual expression of the piece," they added.nnThe early prototypes they created form the Wall Mounted Luminaires and a Mockup Chandelier lighting collections, which were displayed at the Open House exhibition hosted by gallery L'ArcoBaleno during New York design week last month.nnA few designers have been experimenting with lava. Formafantasma used cooled lava from Mount Etna in Sicily to create a collection of furniture, which they described when we visited their Eindhoven studio. Much of the mountain is under water; when measured from its oceanic base, Mauna Kea is over 10,000 m (33,000 ft) tall. In Hawaiian mythology, Poliʻahu is one of the four goddesses of snow, thought to reside on Mauna Kea. Today, the mountain is known as one of the most important land-based astronomical research centers in the world.nnOur light pollution project WWW.SKYGLOWPROJECT.COM has taken us all across the continent to some of the most incredible dark sky locations, but the night sky quality here was absolutely stunning. We really lucked out with a crystal clear night and one of the best milky ways we've ever seen.
