The hypersonic rocket is the fastest machine to have ever flown within the Earth's atmosphere. During a test launch in 1998 the rocket reached a top speed of 4924mph (mach 6.47/7989 kph) The Hypersonic Flying Laboratory, nicknamed 'Kholod' (meaning 'cold' in Russian) was developed by Roscosmos, with the assistance of NASA and ONERA in the early 1990s. Nine are believed have been produced, but only four are currently accounted for. The rocket will go on sale on Monday in Battersea Park, South London. No reserve has been placed and the auction house declined to speculate on a final price. The original rocket cost $95 million (€73 million) to manufacture. A selection of classic cars will also be going up for auction, including the 1956 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Competizione 'Tour de France' by Scaglietti which is expected to fetch £4.1-£5.2 million ($6.7-$8.5 million/€5.2-€6.6 million).
