The idea was to feature long takes, slow motion, and then reversing the footage to tell the story of four ill-fated thugs who die over a case of fake diamonds. It was to be gritty, dirty, and sad. Filming went awesome but certain issues arose in post which caused the project to be shelved for others.nnThe project was defunct until I heard Money Power Glory by Lana Del Rey -- nearly two years later -- which spurred me into a 72 hour editing marathon. I grabbed a copy of song, sped it up (Sorry, Lana) to hopefully help it from being removed, and went to editing. The Solar Shirt is the latest design in the Wearable Solar collection of Pauline van Dongen and has been developed in collaboration with Holst Centre. The shirt seamlessly incorporates 120 thin film solar cells that are combined into modules using Holst Centre’s stretchable printed electronics allowing the wearer to generate energy and charge devices on the go. These modules are laminated onto the fabric using a heat press technique, fully merging the solar cells with the textile. Working with printed electronics gave the freedom to playfully place the cells on the shirt. The solar cells are used as a graphic pattern, making the technology an aesthetic and distinct feature of the design.   Less

The Hamster Powered Hamster Drawing Machine is the machine hamsters everywhere have been waiting for, finally bringing workout selfies to the animal kingdom.nnThe hamster drawing is encoded in two large wooden cams. The cams were generated by creating a simulation of the drawing machine using openFrameworks and Box2D. They were then exported as vectors and CNC milled from plywood. To be able to have the drawing encoded on the inside, rather than the outside, edge of the cams, it was necessary for them not to have a central axis. This was achieved by milling two aluminium circles with a groove in each of them for a roller chain to sit in. The sandwiched chain then sits on three sprockets around the edges of the back part machine. The drawing arms were also milled from aluminium with pockets for laser cut acrylic inserts.nnThe hamster is displayed on a small LCD screen connected to a Raspberry Pi hidden behind the screen. The Raspberry Pi is running software written in openFrameworks that sends ASCII commands to an Applied Motion STM23IP-3EE stepper motor over ethernet to control its speed.nnThanks to Joji the hamster for hamstering, Jesse Fleming for videoing, Inessa Demidova for drawing and Philip Rugo and Kytten Janae for allowing Joji to pursue his artistic career.nnwww.neilmendoza.com   Less
