There is 5 seconds of black at the start of this video. Best viewed in the dark, with good speakers/headphones and loud! nnThis was conceived after receiving a randomly generated title, line of dialogue and a prop to be used in a certain way. They were:nnTitle: 2:17AMnLine: It doesn't have any power. Is it plugged in?nProp: We see a character shake a stone from their boot.nnWe had 48 hours to use those three things as inspiration for our film. We all sat round for a few hours thinking of loads of plots and narratives then settled upon this one. Because of the time constraint, I decided it wouldn't be a great use of time to write a script and expect my actors to off page by the time we shoot. So instead I created an improvised environment, almost like a drama workshop, but with a camera and lights 'n stuff. I wanted real emotion, real drama, real words and the best way (in my opinion) to achieve that is through spontaneous improvisation. Tuppence and Rob took the ideas I threw at them and gave me back something I could never have written on my own. It really was a collaborative effort from all involved, everyone could chip in an idea here and there. I then made sense of all of the material in the edit to carve the narrative you see unfold. nnThe only piece of music to feature in the film was recorded on location, I wanted to use saxophone in an improvised way to reflect the improvised nature of the film making process. Sam Ayres did a fantastic job at taking my ambiguous musical direction, I didn't know how we would use it in advance of making the film, I just new I wanted to work with music in an interesting way. nnThe other conceptual approach was on sound design, Dylan Bell went around the location "hunting for sounds" as Jessica put it. He then created a soundscape from time stretched tapping of pipes to the heavily reverberating rattle of metal chains. If you listen closely the soundscape is telling the story. I sometimes say sound is more important than the image and in a genre like Sci-Fi when I had no time to pull of convincing SFX, sound became my tool to create this alternate reality. Dylan is also an AMAZING drummer and is currently gigging with the boys Years & Years ( https://vimeo.com/84751433 )nnI want to publicly thank my small but perfectly formed crew for grafting so much on this and for wanting to get involved in the first place. nnAnd a special thanks to my cast Tuppence and Rob, who really got stuck into the improvisational approach I took to making this and went with me along the way, giving them selves up to the concept and embodying their characters completely. It was a privilege to work with such talented actors, you guys rock!nnCredits:nnCast:nnWoman - Tuppence Middleton ( http://www.imdb.com/name/nm3095562/ )nMan - Robert Boulter ( http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1674889/ )nnCrew:nFirst AD (kind of;) and all round superstar! - Rob Small ( http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0806519/ )nSound Recordist - Edouard Camou ( http://www.sinewavz.com/ )nSound Design - Dylan BellnArt Department - Jessica Dance ( http://www.jessicadance.com/ )nSaxophone - Sam Ayres nLocation - The roof of my flat and The Old Truman Brewery ( http://tinyurl.com/pffxxw5 )n90% of the kit - Focus 24 ( http://focus24.tv/ )nAnd me on everything else ( http://cargocollective.com/robertfrancismuller )nSpecial thanks to: James and Sam @ F24 - Jason and Rudi @ The Old Truman Brewery nnHope you enjoy/enjoyed it! It was fun making it. nnA note to the people who contributed footage from around the world. I'm sorry I didn't use any of it. I didn't really get enough footage to make it work and it was always going to depend on what title/line/prop we got. I didn't think the skyline shots would have added anything to this particular plot, but I really appreciate that you all shot something to send to me!nnNames/links of people that sent me footage over the weekend...nnStephen Harrison - https://vimeo.com/stephenharrisonnJake AyresnLee - http://weefilms.co.uk/nnIf I have missed anyone, let me know!nnTech Stuff:nnCamera - Black Magic Pocket Cinema CameranLens - Tokina 11-16mm (variable ND filter)nShoulder rig + Arri FF1 follow FocusnTV Logic monitornLighting - 1 LED panel and some crappy 56k bulbsnEdited/Graded in Premier Pro CCnSound design in Logic Pro Less
