I'm not using extremely heavy weight though I was a little winded as this video was taken for my 4th set of barbell rows. But I don't think you have to go super heavy on barbell rows and you need to make sure you feel your back muscles working. Barbell rows is one of my top exercises for building thick and detailed back muscles. If you do these right, you'll feel your lats. They're a great first or 2nd exercise in your back workout. I feel like some type of row, whether it's barbell rows, dumbbell rows, Hammer Strength rows, or chest-rest plated rows, is necessary for building your back muscles. Exercise machines, more commonly recognized as just "machines" at the gym, are very useful for isolating different muscle groups. When I say machines I also include cable machines, not just hammer strength and cybex's. So are they better for building muscle than free weights? In a way... yes. They are built for isolation that dumbbells and barbells just can't achieve even with perfect form. However, Dumbbells and Barbells are still essential to build a great physique. Mainly because compound exercises are the best at making you thicker. And you also use your stability muscles which help with functional strength. Not to mention that free weight movements are easier to keep track of your progress in terms of strength. So don't forget to use free weights, but keep in mind that workout machines and gym cables are designed to improve isolation, making them superior in that sense in my opinion. I suggest that you perform this workout at least once per week. Before the workout do 5-10 minutes of cardio as a general warm up. I recommend the concept 2 ergo-meter rowing machine because it works the entire body. But you can use whatever cardio machines you have available. After that do some leg swings and mobility moves to help limber up and get the kinks and cracks out of your joints before getting into the actual leg workout. The main exercise of our leg workout is Barbell Squats. For this do a couple progressively heavier warm up sets and then do 3 working sets of 8-10 reps. After squats you can move on to leg extensions. For this workout I'm doing single leg extensions on the hammer strength machine. Keep the reps between 10-12 per set and do 3 top weight working sets. Really focus on getting a peak contraction in the quadriceps at the top of each rep. Next we're going to do some single leg curls to work the hamstrings. This is a great move that isolates each hamstring individually.
