Smart electronic devices are becoming very popular, but charging them can prove problematic. South Korean scientists say they have developed an energy-generating fabric that can power a range of devices. Just tapping the fabric – known as a wearable triboelectric nanogenerator – can power devices such as, for example, a remote control for cars or a light-up badge. Professor Kim Sang-Woo led the research at Sungkyunkwan University. “People try to remove static electricity in daily life and attempts to use it as an energy source were quite limited. That’s why we started this research, to use static electricity as an energy source,” he says. The layers of silver-coated textile rub against an organic polymer film. The researchers have shown the electricity created from this friction can power lights, screens – and more. “With this energy, we can power Light Emitting Diodes and Liquid Crystal displays without an external power source, as well as demonstrating low-power devices like sensors,” says Kim Sang Woo. The developers see their ‘smart’ fabric connecting people to the everyday products they use. “If technologies for the Internet of Things develops more in the future, various sensors could be attached to human skin. The fabric could be an independent power source for those sensors,” suggests the professor. The foldable fabric is much more wearable than a bulky battery. So charging your phone as you walk could be a step closer to reality. From smart fabric we turn to smart sensors. Imagine a floor that lights up when it is walked on. Finnish researchers at the VTT company are developing ‘smart’ sensors connected to the environment to send information directly to a smartphone. The developers say the sensors can be used for guided lighting, burglar alarms and even a baby monitor. “What we are seeing here is people being detected walking in the corridor. That is based on depth cameras. We are using the detections to control lighting in the corridor so we can guide the people to the places they are going to,” says research scientist Esa-Matti Sarjanoja. The trend to connect to our surroundings with smart devices, known as the Internet of Things, is fast-growing. The company says the technology could also be used for security purposes. For instance, an LED lamp could be put into burglar alarm mode, sensing movements by intruders in the home and sending notifications to a smart device throughout the day. Some other uses include putting smart sensors in baby monitors. The company’s prototype smart dummy gathers information about the baby’s temperature, breathing and nutrition and sends the information to a smartphone. In sturdy Finland babies are often left to nap outside, even in freezing temperatures. Parent Soledad Peresin says she will be using the system regularly. “I can monitor her temperature, her body temperature, the temperature outside if there is a sudden drop on the temperature. I can go and bring her inside and also it gives me information about her suction pressure. When you know your baby well enough to know the suction pattern you know when she is about to wake up as well,” she says. The company is keen to expand the use of its smart sensors in light fittings with colour changing, dimming and beam-steering properties. They see the sensors being used for a variety of lighting solutions from energy-saving street lamps to self-adjusting interior lighting.   Less

An officer approaches Jeremiah Smith, yells at him and hits him so hard with his police baton Smith’s white hat flies off his head.Smith attorney Rahsaan Gordon disagrees that his client threatened the officer. “He never uttered a word to him,” Gordon says. In the video, a woman holding a baby, screams and then covers her mouth after seeing Smith, stumble to the ground. “This is a perfect glimpse into how even a small child can see some of this brutal violence that is being issued by these people who are sent into our communities to serve and to protect,” Gordon says. Both Smith and Lisa Simmons have filed a lawsuit against the city and the police. Simmons is a woman seen getting arrested in the video. Gordon says police fabricated information in a police report saying Simmons was drinking and that Smith attempted to hit the officer. “Anyone with any level of decent vision, can see that’s simply not true in the video,” the attorney says. Charges against Simmons were dropped. Smith plead guilty to misdemeanor battery, under a plea deal. In response to this story, the Chicago Police Department says they take allegations of excessive force very seriously and any action undermining the integrity of the department will not be tolerated. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and other pro-Israel lobbying groups in the US, who have spent millions of dollars to scuttle the agreement, are losing their influence in Washington, said Mike Gravel, a former Democratic US senator from Alaska. “The majority of the American public is for this deal and that AIPAC has spent so much money to try and reverse that, I think is proving that AIPAC is becoming less effective on American policy,” Gravel told Press TV in a phone interview on Wednesday. “I’m very optimistic that the United States will go ahead and sustain this agreement,” he added. A new survey has found that a majority of Americans want US lawmakers in Congress to approve the nuclear agreement with Iran. According to the survey from the University of Maryland released on Tuesday, 55 percent of respondents said Congress should uphold the nuclear accord. Congress is reviewing the nuclear agreement and is expected to vote to disapprove of it by September 17. US President Barack Obama says he is confident that the nuclear accord will go forward despite opposition from congressional Republicans. He is only one vote short in the Senate to sustain his veto. Gravel, who served two terms in Congress from 1969 to 1981, said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fabricated the false accusations that Iran has military objectives in its nuclear program. “This whole issue is a fabricated issue by Netanyahu that Iran wanted to get the bomb,” Gravel said. “Iran has never moved to get the bomb, there’s no intelligence organization who has reported that there’s any effort by Iran to acquire the bomb,” he emphasized. Israel has publicly opposed the nuclear agreement reached between Iran and the P5+1 group -- the United States, Britain, France, China, Russia and Germany – in Vienna in mid-July. The United States has airdropped nearly 50 tones of ammunition to its trained rebels in Syria in response to Russia’s involvement in fight against the Daesh militants in the Arab country, says political analyst Ralph Schoenman. An anonymous official said Monday that US C-17 transport aircraft, accompanied by fighter escorts, dropped pallets of supplies overnight in Hassakeh province for those “moderate” militant groups whose leaders were "appropriately vetted by the United States and have been fighting to remove ISIL from northern Syria." The move “is a response to the support of (Russian President Vladimir) Putin for the government of (Bashar al-)Assad and the bombing that has been waged by them against the Islamic militants (Daesh) who are nominally the target of these American efforts,” Schoenman told Press TV on Tuesday. “Nothing about the independence of the people is going to result from this, nothing about their national rights, nothing about their dignity, nothing about their survival; only bad things arise from this because the intent is malicious, evil and basically an imperial depredation that never stops,” the author of the Hidden History of Zionism added. The surprise military aid by the US came as Russia’s military campaign against terrorists fighting the Syrian government entered its second week. Russia has carried out scores of airstrikes and naval attacks against Daesh (ISIL) and other terrorist groups in Syria since September 30, killing hundreds of them. North Korea’s highest court has sentenced a South Korea-born Canadian pastor to hard labour for life for subversion, China’s official news agency Xinhua reported on Wednesday (December 16). Hyeon Soo Lim, the head pastor at a Toronto church that is one of Canada’s largest, has been held by North Korea since February. Earlier this year, he had appeared on North Korean state media confessing to crimes against the state. North Korea’s supreme court said Lim had attempted to overthrow the North Korean government and undermine its social system with “religious activities” for the past 18 years, Xinhua reported. The court held that he fabricated anti-North Korean propaganda as part of a US and South Korean-led “human rights racket” against the country, according to Xinhua. The court said Lim confessed to helping people defect from North Korea, and said he had met the U.S. ambassador to Mongolia regarding the plans, Xinhua reported. Most North Korean defectors fleeing the isolated, repressive country travel to South Korea via China and Southeast Asia, although it is possible to defect via Mongolia. North Korea’s official KCNA news agency has not reported on the court’s decision. North Korea has previously sentenced a Korean-American missionary, Kenneth Bae, to 15 years of hard labour but released him last year after holding him for two years. In July, Lim appeared at a news conference in North Korea and confessed that he had travelled to the country on the pretext of humanitarian work and gathered information that he used in sermons outside the country to drive the regime to a collapse “with the love of God.” His church, the 3,000-member Light Korean Presbyterian Church, has said Lim had visited the North more than 100 times since 1997 and has helped establish an orphanage and a nursing home there. Lim has lived in Canada since 1986 and is a Canadian citizen. His church said in March that Lim, who was 60 at the time, has “a very serious health problem, very high blood pressure, he’s on a prescription, and his family is anxious to send medicine.” Both North Korea and neighbouring China have clamped down on Christian groups in recent years. Last year, Pyongyang released three detained Americans including Bae and another man who had left a copy of the Bible at a club. Reno, NV - New details emerged from a witness who recorded a video of three juveniles beating two people after causing havoc at a Jo-Ann fabric store in Reno. The incident occurred just before 3 p.m. Tuesday at the store on the 3700 block of Kietzke Lane. A male juvenile and two female friends entered the store and knocked over a display, Reno police said in a news release Wednesday. The three juveniles were fighting outside the store when an employee asked if they needed help, said Derek de Glymes de Hollebecque, of Reno, who witnessed the incident.Police said the three juveniles began yelling obscenities at her and at the customers. The male juvenile then punched the employee in the face and all three - ages 12, 13, and 16 - then left the store, police said. Hollebecque was shopping with his girlfriend at the store when he heard screaming and yelling, he said. Hollebecque said he couldn’t ignore it and had to intervene. “I ran up to the front and saw an elderly manager in her 50s or 60s and a younger 20-year-old manager fighting with the kids,” Hollebecque said.Then he said he heard someone yelling, "That’s assault, that’s assault." “‘We can call the police for that.’” When the male juvenile pushed over the display, the store manager asked the group to leave, and that’s when he “launched at her face,” Hollebecque said. Then they pulled the younger manager by her hair, slammed her on her knees and smashed her face to the concrete ground and began punching her and kicking her in the stomach, he said.Hollebecque and another customer tried to separate them, but the three began to attack them too, he said. Imagining tomorrow’s sustainable, self-sufficient city: that is the goal of Fab City, a global project which started in Barcelona two years ago and is currently being tested in Amsterdam. Located at the head of Java Island in the city’s Eastern Harbour District, it includes 50 innovative pavilions, where more than 400 students, professionals, artists and creatives are working on finding solutions to urban issues. Porta Palace is a tiny home on wheels recently completed by a Dutch art and design collective. Fixed on a trailer, this 18 square metre mobile home is built with eco-friendly materials. It is timber-framed and covered with a steel roof, and contains a small living area with a kitchen, a toilet, a shower, and a double bed located over the coffee table. “People are really surprised that there is so much space in such a small house,” says Woonpioners project manager Jelte Glas. “Also, (they are surprised) because we use a lot of glass and it is open and looks so open and interacts really with the environment.” The Porta Palace will set you back approximately 35,000 euros. Wikkelhouse is a module concept house mostly built out of cardboard. Different modules are created which can then be assembled according to the home-owners wishes and needs. Each module is made by gluing 24 layers of cardboard around a rotating house-shaped mould, using eco-friendly glue. The structure is then covered with wood frames to protect it from physical impact and UV rays from the sun. Its developers say the result is a robust sandwich structure with optimal insulation qualities. “This is already a little house that I could live in,” says Oep Schilling, the founder of Fiction Factory, the company behind Wikkelhouse, holding up one module. “But now I want a kitchen, and I want a toilet. So we make this element where it’s all in it: I put my kitchen in it, and I put one behind it (the original module), I put another one behind it and now I have a bedroom. So this is already like a house, which is built within a week.” The price per module is about 3,500 euros. If you add concrete foundations, additional construction elements, a pre-fabricated kitchen, toilet and bathroom, the end price of a home comes to around 70,000 euros. And what about equipping your sustainable home with equally sustainable 3D printed elements? That’s what Dutch company MX3D proposes. It has developed a six-axis industrial robot arm with an advanced welding machine controlled by software. The printer proposes a wide variety of objects made of metal or resin, without the need for support structures. The company’s founder says his 3D technology has a significant advantage over ordinary 3D printers, and wants to prove it by printing a pedestrian bridge made of steel in the centre of Amsterdam. “Normal 3D printers have to operate in a building volume like this (holds hands apart) and we can go meters big. So building a bridge is really a leap from where we are now with the current technique. This is our true innovation,” says Gijs van der Velden, the founder of MX3D. Dutch designers Leon Baauw and Marcha Schagen have designed an 'anti-surveillance' coat and bag which they say shield electronic data by blocking signals, thereby protecting the wearer from detection by tracking devices. Footage shot in Rotterdam on Wednesday features a model showing off the coat's capabilities. According to the designers, wearing the coat prevents any hacking of personal information that is encrypted on items with a radio-frequency identification (RFID) card, including passports, ID cards and mobile phones. The coat's metalliferous fabric means the chips are unreadable, the designers say.
