A 14-year-old Indonesian girl has been reunited with her family ten years after being given up for dead in the 2004 tsunami. Raudhatul Jannah was separated from her family when flood water inundated their home in Meulaboh in the mainly Muslim Aceh province. She says she floated on a plank with her brother and was later picked up from the water. Her brother, however, was no-where to be seen. She was found nearly 130 kilometres away south and raised by an elderly woman whom the family has invited to come and live with them. “As a mother I know how that feels, they have been living together for ten years and I can’t just  separate them I need to care about how they feel,” said Raudhatul’s mother Jamaliah. The family has no plan to conduct a DNA test to verify her identity as they are sure she is the daughter they lost, based on her childhood photos. Aceh was the closest point to the epicentre of the Indian Ocean tsunami where at least 170, 000 were killed.   Less

The New York City police commissioner said 32-year-old Zale Thompson had converted to Islam two years ago and visited radical websites including those of al Qaeda, ISIS and al Shabaab but had no clear ties to international extremists. The officer attacked by Thompson is now in a “critical but stable” condition after being hit in the back of the head. Thompson was shot and killed by police. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said that hazardous tsunamis were no longer possible within 300 km of the epicenter and that there was no danger of a Pacific-wide tsunami either. Four rabbis were killed and eight injured in the attack on Kehilat Bnei Torah synagogue in Jerusalem's Har Nof eighbourhood. Rafah residents could be seen brandishing knives, pistols and axes in an apparent reference to the weapons reportedly used in the attack. Sweets and pastries were distributed to children, and some women held Hamas signs. Initial reports from the Israeli police indicate that the men may have been associated with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. Both attackers were shot dead by Israeli police. A special service was held for Catholics in Aceh to remember the tsunami which swept across the Indian Ocean killing more then 220,000 people in 2004. In Indonesia alone more than 130,000 died when waves of up to 15 metres reached land after a 9.1 earthquake struck out at sea on the morning of December 26. At the service monk San Efran Sinaga paid tribute to those who lost their lives: “The people who died in the tsunami, it was actually only their body that died, their spirit is still alive. We believe that our brothers and sisters who have died in the tsunami, they are now at peace in heaven.” Ten years on, warning and protection systems are still in development to prevent another tragedy on such an epic scale. Coastal communities on the Indian Ocean still remain vulnerable to earthquakes and resulting tsunamis. At the Indonesia Agency for Meteorological, Climatology and Geophysics they are working on improving the systems to save lives. “Since 2012, we can not only provide information (to communities) within five minutes but we can also inform when a tsunami will come in somewhere, at what time, and how high. Because it was recorded in a decision support system, (we know) it was not just five minutes, but an average of 4 minutes 47 seconds,” explained head of the agency Andi Ekasakya. With more than 6,000 kilometers of coastline and nearly 13,000 islands, Indonesia’s geography presents a particularly tricky challenge for disaster prevention.   Less

Now, a decade later, special services are being held in many of the places devastated around the Indian Ocean. A Muslim worshipper in Banda Aceh, Aulia Rahman, said: “I hope God has taken the brothers and sisters of Islam who passed away to a better place, as God had summoned them to his side.” The 10th anniversary of the massive quake and tsunami brings back painful memories for the survivors. And for many it’s been impossible to try to rebuild their lives. Amma Ponnu, a woman from a fishing family in Chennai in Tamil Nadu in India, told reporters: “In the tsunami we lost our children, our neighbours and everything else. The Government has tried to help us but nothing has worked. Indonesia has thanked the international community for its help in the country’s recovery. Performers waved flags of the nations who contributed as the vice-president and his wife visited one of two mass graves for the disaster victims. Hit by a 10-metre wave, Indonesia’s Aceh Province bore the brunt of the devastation on December 26, 2004. Almost 170,000 people died in this province alone – nearly three-quarters of the tsunami’s total number of fatal casualties. “This commemoration ceremony is not only to pray for the victims and thank the people around the world, but it is a time when we learn how to resolve the problem – as the lesson (from the tsunami) taught us – how to resolve a complicated problem by uniting as one,” the Vice-President, Jusuf Kalla, said. In the city of Banda Aceh, thousands gathered at a mosque that was one of the few buildings left standing after disaster struck that day. The lives of many worshippers were shattered. The imam said the tsunami had at least brought peace to the province which had suffered years of conflict between the government and rebels. Eleven years ago, the small fishing village of Baan Nam Khem lost more than half its population when the devastating Boxing Day tsunami struck Thailand’s coast. When the water finally ebbed, only 49 buildings were still standing. Today, relatives of the victims gathered at Tsunami Memorial Park, bringing flowers and prayers for their loved ones. The 2004 disaster was triggered by a massive earthquake beneath the Indian Ocean. Within hours, a series of waves reached the coastlines of 11 countries, killing close to 230,000 people across Asia and Africa. Indonesia was hardest hit, with an estimated 160,000 deaths. Another half-million people were displaced. In Thailand, more than 8,000 people were reported dead or missing.
