The film explains what astronauts ate in the 1960s when traveling in space. It is a report on the progress and problems involved in developing, preparing and eating nutritious and tasteful foods during extended space journeys. Host John Fitch visits a space foods kitchen and samples food prepared for astronauts.nnnHISTORICAL BACKGROUND / CONTEXTnnSpace food is a variety of food products, specially created and processed for consumption by astronauts in outer space. The food has specific requirements of providing balanced nutrition for individuals working in space, while being easy and safe to store, prepare and consume in the machinery-filled weightless environments of manned spacecraft. In recent years, space food has been used by various nations engaging on space programs as a way to share and show off their cultural identity and facilitate intercultural communication. Although astronauts consume a wide variety of foods and beverages in space, the initial idea from The Man in Space Committee of the Space Science Board was to supply astronauts with a formula diet that would supply all the needed vitamins and nutrients.nnEarly history:nFor lunch on Vostok I (1961) Yuri Gagarin ate three 160 g toothpaste-type tubes, two of which contained servings of puréed meat and one which contained chocolate sauce.nnIn August 1961, Soviet Cosmonaut Gherman Titov became the first human to experience space sickness on Vostok II; he holds the record for being the first person to vomit in space. This event heralded the need for space flight nutrition.nnOne of John Glenn's many tasks, as the first American to orbit Earth in 1962, was to experiment with eating in weightless conditions. Some experts had been concerned that weightlessness would impair swallowing. Glenn experienced no difficulties and it was determined that microgravity did not affect the natural swallowing process.nnAstronauts in later Mercury missions (1959–1963) disliked the food that was provided. They ate bite-sized cubes, freeze-dried powders, and tubes of semiliquids. The astronauts found it unappetizing, experienced difficulties in rehydrating the freeze-dried foods, and did not like having to squeeze tubes or collect crumbs. Prior to the mission, the astronauts were also fed low residual launch-day breakfasts, to reduce the chances that they would defecate in flight.nnSeveral of the food issues from the Mercury missions were addressed for the later Gemini missions (1965–1966). Tubes (often heavier than the foods they contained) were abandoned. Gelatin coatings helped to prevent bite-sized cubes from crumbling. Simpler rehydration methods were developed. The menus also expanded to include items such as shrimp cocktail, chicken and vegetables, toast squares, butterscotch pudding, and apple juice.nnThe crew of Gemini III snuck a corned beef sandwich on their spaceflight. Mission Commander Gus Grissom loved corned beef sandwiches, so Pilot John Young brought one along, having been encouraged by fellow astronaut Walter Schirra. However, Young was supposed to eat only approved food, and Grissom was not supposed to eat anything. Floating pieces of bread posed a potential problem, causing Grissom to put the sandwich away (although he did enjoy it) and the astronauts were mildly rebuked by NASA for the act. A congressional hearing was called, forcing the NASA deputy administrator George Mueller to promise no repeats. NASA took special care about what astronauts brought along on future missions.nnPrior to the Apollo program (1968–1975), early space food development was conducted at the US Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine and the Natick Army Labs. The variety of food options continued to expand for the Apollo missions. The new availability of hot water made rehydrating freeze-dried foods simpler, and produced a more appetizing result. The "spoon-bowl" allowed more normal eating practices. How can one attest to greatness, when one has never experienced madness? This is a question that Hefe Heetroc, a New Mexico transplant has pondered. What Hefe is talking about today, is what has been talked about for centuries. When one has to figure out for the longest period of time; what genres classify themselves, and would lend themselves to his style of music. How could these hybrid styles morph together to create a cacophony of wondrous sound and not some malodorous trash on today’s current radio stations? He seems to have won the answer; slick melodic robotic beats over loopy poetic quips that ring all through all times of space energy, in the galaxy expanding. How can one attest to greatness if one has never experienced madness? This is a question that the artist that we’re talking about today, is what he was trying to figure out for the longest. Being yourself nowadays is considered a revolutionary act. To not be themselves, in this day and age, his production of music, how could “it” be? His is a hybrid of genres morphed together to create a kickoff bigger than any SuperBowl game. His is a sound of wonder- Euro trash meets vaporwave, with a half drunk dubstep along for the ride! Is he without merit in his search? Well, he seems to have found the answer. His newest creation, the video for “Space Energy”, directed by the esteemed reclusive genius Aldrei Alfonso. Slink along with slick slippery beats, over loopy poetic rings, through all times of space energy in the galaxy – expanding heavy stuff indeed; this artist seems to be tackling it with great depth and fortitude. His mantra and/or vision, was to be plastered all across the sky in this video, for everyone to see. For everyone to feel. For everyone to be here is, the eternal question. That this artist has attempted to answer this, and I believe he has, with his latest Magnum Opus “Space Energy” a video of our protagonist traveling all over Albuquerque New Mexico, to the mountains, to the Rio, and finally an abandoned place peppered with graffiti. Pachacamac is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the longest inhabited ancient settlements in the Americas. An important religious center, the vast complex is today just 30 miles outside of the Lima, the most populous city in Peru. As a result, Pachacamac faces the threat of invasion and exploitation. Creating business opportunities and related education opportunities for the community encourages the local people to take ownership of the site and protect it from destruction. She is committed to protecting the site from all threats to the important cultural heritage. Since 2014, she has worked and partnered with the Sustainable Preservation Initiative (SPI) to ensure a socially responsible approach to protecting the site. SPI is a global not-for-profit organization that creates economic opportunity and stability by giving communities around archaeological sites the tools to be self-reliant, leveraging their historic sites responsibly and freeing them to thrive. The result: the preservation of our collective legacy. SPI’s programs focus on providing local residents, primarily women, with business and artisan skills so they benefit from Pachacamac’s tourism, and therefore rely on its preservation. SPI and the museum organized a group of local women who came together from the area surrounding Pachacamac. These women have formed an organization that they control and run themselves called Sisan (“flowering” in the local Quechua language) where they create and sell products related to the site’s cultural history and iconography. Their business is profitable and self-sustaining, and they are proud defenders of Pachacamac. The Pachacamac Site Museum has a store where artisanal products made by the group and other SPI projects around Peru are sold. nnThe SPI program not only an economic but also a social hub for disadvantaged women from surrounding communities. Pozzi-Escot says, “To see the way the women—who came here some years ago and were so timid—feel about themselves and have become empowered is an important achievement. For them, SPI and the Pachacamac Site Museum truly means improving their quality of life and it also means knowing who they are and where they want to go.”nnPachacamac is the most visited site on the central Peruvian coast, and the staff also hosts community and educational programs. For example, children come and learn about archaeological preservation, native plants, and how to make adobe for conserving the ancient architecture. nn“I think what makes me most happy is knowing that the people here feel like they are a part of their own history and of Pachacamac,” says Pozzi-Escot. “That is the most important thing.” Pozzi-Escot knows that their activities at the museum and with SPI are connecting cultural heritage to the present-day lives of local people, giving locals a way to better their lives and protect the site from destruction. “One of the satisfactions I have in my work is knowing that we will no longer need the intervention of the police to protect this site,” she said.
