Today, gender activists with a similar mindset are having a fit because a noted astronomer appeared at a press conference wearing a mildly risqué shirt. What is going on? That is coming up next on the Factual Feminist.nMatt Taylor, a brilliant astrophysicist, was a key member of a team that managed to land a space probe on a comet moving more than 100,000 miles per hour --300 million miles away.But for many gender activists, it was the shirt he wore at a press conference that riveted their attention. The shirt was an eccentric fashion choice—but his elaborate tattoos are unusual as well. But professors and scientists are not known for their conventional sartorial choices.Here are two philosophy professors and a professor of math. I think Dr Taylor looks like a cool guy. But gender activists were appalled—not because he was dressed informally—but because his shirt featured images of “sexualized” women. Guardian writer Alice Bell, marveled that scientists can land their robot on a comet, but can’t see the misogyny right under their nose. Rose Eveleth, technology editor of the Atlantic sent out several indignant tweets about the shirt, including this one. “Thanks for ruining the cool comet landing Asshole.” The Verge carried article that blamed the shirt for “demeaning” half the world’s population. This is madness. It is not Dr. Taylor who has created a hostile environment. It’s the gender activists. Rose Eveleth’s tweets ignited a storm of social media abuse on the hapless Dr. Taylor. Mortified by the attacks, he gave a tearful apology—and renounced his shirt—a gift from a female friend. It is hard to disagree with a defender of Dr. Taylor who described his detractors as “joyless scolds,” who are far more judgmental and censorious than social conservatives like Rick Santorum. One of my Twitter followers @eggkin sent me a poster of the proper attire for scientists in Taylor’s organization—the European Space Agency (ESA) nPhil Plait, the popular science writer and author of Slate’s“Bad Astronomy” blog, has defended Taylor's feminist critics. Lets consider what he says. nThe shirt by itself, Plait explains, may not seem like a big deal. It has to be seen in the overall context of a scientific community which he says is “steeped” in sexism. Yes there is anger and bitterness—because women are routinely and systematically shortchanged, discriminated against and held back in science. By wearing a female objectifying shirt, Taylor was exacerbating an already fraught situation. Women are fed up with male insensitivity, boorishness and the slow pace of change. It’s too bad that a seemingly nice (but clueless) guy was made to feel bad on a day of his greatest triumph. But think of all the women who were never even given a chance to reckon with comets. nPlait links to various articles that seem to support the idea that scientific culture “steeped in sexism.” There is a flourishing cottage industry of feminist advocacy research and twisted victim statistics and Phil Plait is credulously citing it. And he ignores serious and credible research that shows little or no bias. nIn 2009 the National Academy of Sciences published a major study that flatly contradicts Plait’s claim of science “steeped in sexism”According to the study, “..At many critical transition points in their academic careers (e.g., hiring for tenure-track and tenure positions and promotions) women appear to have fared as well as or better than men…”nTo give one typical finding, in the years studied, 2004 and 2005, women accounted for approximately 20 percent of applicants for positions in mathematics, but were 28 percent of those interviewed and 32 percent of those who received job offers. While there, we also took shooting field trips to some of the magnificent locations a few hours away, most notably Grand Canyon National Park and Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park (spotted in many epic John Ford Westerns and countless other classics like EASY RIDER and BACK TO THE FUTURE III http://bit.ly/1lngv3x!) The weather was very intense at times, with high winds, frigid temperatures, and stormfronts passing over us, but the locations were absolutely stunning and the clouds parted for long enough to reveal some incredible starscapes, meteors, and the clearest Milky Way I've ever seen!nnThis was also my first opportunity to collaborate with old friend and former American Film Institute classmate Harun Mehmedinović (www.bloodhoney.com), an incredibly accomplished photographer and now one of the professors at NAU. His passion and artists' eye really elevated the quality of the material in a big way. Because the nights we picked had almost zero moon, the stars and Milky Way were exceptionally clear (once the storm clouds parted), which also made a perfect galactic palette for some star trails experiments, including a new mirroring/distortion effect at 2:56 that revealed a cool native pattern. For those not familiar with past vids, the star trails effect is created by tracing the rotation of the Earth's axis, using a long exposure timelapse pictures and an awesome rendering program called STARSTAX.nnKeep an eye out at 2:10 (top center) as a meteor seems to BURST through the atmosphere and leave a smoke trail in its wake. As the anniversary is shortly upon us, we decided to revisit footage captured from live local media broadcasts on the morning of September 11, 2001. nnOn September 11, the nation watched in horror live as the second plane slammed into the World Trade Center, then later both towers collapsed into their own footprints live; essentially, the nation's viewing audience watched thousands of people die on live TV.nnAs audiences are captivated by the nightmarish scenes of death and destruction replayed over and over and over again on 24/7 news channels, are they too traumatized in that instant to question anything they are being told with a critical eye? Are viewers simply terrified into readily believing everything that they see on TV?nnThis footage comes from a VCR recording taped on the morning of 9/11 by Popeye at Federaljack.com. Reviewing it now years later leaves us with fresh questions and definitely many more questions than it answers. (View the full video here: http://youtu.be/NRaflwtyIZU) Our video only analyzes what was reported until around 11:30 a.m. that day, and thus, does not even include the fact that the BBC reported the WTC building 7 collapse 20 minutes early while the reporter is clearly standing in front of a live view of building 7 still standing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tGOt9f3gKk).nnOf the original, YouTube viewer Jsd8675 wrote, "Best coverage... illustrates the feeling that every city was eventually going to be attacked, everything was closing, shutting down, the country was falling apart. Back then, we thought the entire country was falling apart."nnThe reporting of this event as seen above certainly mirrors that viewer's sentiments; traumatic doesn't even begin to cover it, and much more was being reported than just the attacks at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the crash at Shanksville, Pennsylvania that comprise the official report.nnAfter the space shuttle Challenger blew up live on television killing all seven people aboard, Joyce Nelson wrote:nn"On Tuesday, January 28, 1986, the two-minute TV clip dominated the airwaves of North America. Although the only network covering the Challenger launch live was Ted Turner's Atlanta-based Cable News Network (CNN), within six minutes of the disaster, CBS, ABC and NBC, followed by CTC and CBC, broke into their regular programming and stayed with live coverage for five hours straight: playing and replaying again and again and again this eerie two-minute video clip. My strategy was to prove him to be the liar I knew he WOULD BE, thus hurting his credibility and creating doubt to win the case. There was no doubt in my mind this man was going to lie under oath. As a matter of fact I was counting on it. It didn't take long for the lies to spew forth. nnJackman was VERY arrogant and perjured himself on several occasions by claiming "I had to ask him several times to produce a driver's license", AND, "he refused to sign the ticket" (see, I told you all cops are liars). I then persuaded the judge to let me play the video. Jackman got very pissed off because he didn't think the judge would allow me to play it. I asked to repeat the comments then played the tape to prove he was lying through his teeth.nnI also made an ass out of him by asking him a series of questions like "How do you calibrate the tuning fork used to test the radar gun?". He could not answer that question, and many others like it. If looks could kill I would have died a thousands deaths.nnJudge found me guilty for doing 43 in a 30. He felt the radar gun was in good working order and Jackman used it properly.nnI then filed for an appeal so I could have a jury trial in the county courthouse, with a different judge. I eventually withdrew the case when I discovered I would have had to pay the jury seven or eight hundreds dollars if I were to lose again. It just wasn't worth the risk.nn****************************************************************nnON ANOTHER NOTE: After this traffic stop took place I was informed that Jackman once intimidated my nephew, who just returned home from a tour of duty in Iraq, into searching his car. He called him a "little bitch" when he found a bottle of his wife's Midol in the glove box. Does that sound like someone who's trying to "protect and serve"?nnCr0wsEyes writes:nn"Gotta love the "if you'd just bent the fuck over, he probably would have let you off with a warning" shticks going on. I knew this particular cop personally for a number of years, and I can tell you he gets off on asserting his authority over others, in uniform and out. Sales at Sears has been declining for 27 straight quarters.nnMacy's is closing 5 stores eliminating 2,500 jobs and big box store Target is eliminating 475 jobs.nnNiche store Aéropostale is projected it will close about 175 stores and "The Children's Place" announced that it will be closing 125 locations by 2016.nnBest Buy is closing 15 Canadian locations and cut 900 jobs after shuttering 50 US stores in 2012, while Blockbuster Video has completely shut down all of their stores.nnIn the food sector analysts project that even with a growing population grocery store sales will decline by 1.7 percent (3rd paragraph) as McDonalds sales dipped 3.3 percent in January.nnSuperstore Wal-Mart is not immune to the economic collapse. David Cheesewright, CEO of Walmart International recently stated that Wal-Mart is going to try to protect US market share - in light of the companies domestic "earnings warning" - by fostering the growth from outside the US. However Cheesewright pointed out, "We're seeing economies under stress pretty much everywhere we operate"nnSnyder wraps his 20 points with a forecast from retail consultant Howard Davidowitz who predicts in 15 to 20 years half of America's shopping malls will fail and that "only upscale shopping centers with anchors like Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus will survive."nnNow if you account for the number of consumers migrating to online shopping Snyder makes it a point that retail experts can only attribute 20% of the decline to Internet shoppers. The rest, Snyder attributes to "the slow, steady death of the middle class U.S. consumer." He reports , "median household income has declined for five years in a row, but all of our bills just keep going up. Some people might not think that a Women for Independence organisation was necessary but when Carolyn and some friends and colleagues were sitting night after night watching the independence debate unfold on the political programs whether it's Newsnight or Scotland Tonight or the news itself "we were absolutely sick fed up of the whole debate being presented through the eyes of men in grey suits (no disrespect to anyone who's got a grey suit on tonight!) but it brings a very serious point because if women are 52% of the population and if there's going to be a yes vote and we are actually going to achieve independence then we need to persuade the women. And we need to listen to the women first and foremost and we thought it was necessary to shift the focus away from debating some of the issues in Punch and Judy fashion about the currency or the monarchy or whatever to talk about real women, real people, in the streets actually we're concerned about. Women for independence doesn't have a manifesto, it doesn't have policies, we're first and foremost about listening to women and providing a space for women to discuss independence and make sure we'll damn well bloody be heard in the independence debate." Women for Independence is deliberately very inclusive "so if there's another speaker from Women for Independence they might not say exactly what I'm going to say but this is what I'm going to say" And she relates how after she and another person were late for a meeting in Motherwell because of their SatNavs, a wag in the audience said "if we have to rely on people like you and your SatNavs then how will we know what independence will look like?" "And I thought that was quite interesting because my support for independence isn't based on having an exact idea of what independence will look like and my view of independence which is a simple view that a nation and its people have the right to determine their own future and not to get the government's policies and values and the assets stripped that a government in London invariably does. I think it's a basic democratic right but we have to have a wee think about what some of the opinion polls are saying, and the latest one says that if people thought that next year we'd be £500 a year better off they'll vote yes for independence. Now that's not my view but it's clearly a view that's out there. And is that the view of people who are already well-off? I don't think so. I'd be interested in the social class, the gender makeup of the people that say they feel they'll be better off. Because when I think the people who are saying that probably are sick of politicians just fighting it out amongst each other, probably are sick of the big debates about the constitution, the monarchy, things like that: they don't feel it makes a difference in their day-to-day life. It was the things Cat was talking about, about the terrible attacks on our basic dignity and humanity being perpetuated by the government in Westminster. In my work and in my family life I've encountered so many barriers thinking how bad does it have to get? Because over the last few years collectively as a nation and individually we have lost a hell of a lot more than £500 a year: we have lost thousands. And the people looking to be better off are the people that are really struggling. You phone for a crisis grant from Glasgow City Council and can't get through because it is overwhelmed and they say that "if you've already applied for a crisis grant please allow 15 days for it to be processed. I'm sorry we can't put you through but you can look in our website and there's information about where to go for a food bank." But this is 2013! What does it take for people to go "No!" That is enough! This is evidence of the UK and Westminster failing. How much more evidence do people need that this isn't matching the inspirations of the majority or the people in Scotland? Nothing is guaranteed but if you were a bookie what would you bet on? That Westminster was going to change? Then think about the odds if the Scottish Parliament had all the power over taxation, utilities etc. We take daily risks when we change jobs or house or take out a loan. The Union caused crushing poverty and people rioted in 1707 rebelled in 1715 but they did not have the democratic right to undo it and many lost their lives. Today nobody is being asked to risk their lives. All we have to do is put an X in the box. We have a duty to future generations to stand and be counted and take control. We wouldn't want to look back on 2014 and think we didn't take that chance to do one simple thing. We must take that chance. What's going to win the referendum is if everyone in here persuades one other person we'll win a landslide. So let's go out and do it! Less
