http://tinyurl.com/mdwx6y6 The best power is free power. It's good to have options. I already have the Biolite Stove, so adding a good Solar Power option rounds it out. This charger boasts 14W, 5V output for only $59. Is it worth it? Wellll.....allegedly. When testing a solar panel, it helps to have cooperation from the sun.nnWant one? I did an internship at a university a couple summers ago and one of my tasks was to repair this solar powered toy car. I actually re-designed the whole thing (the wood platforms were not originally there) and then had to go inside the motor to see why the wheels weren't turning and that's what this video shows you!! Enjoy! (Skip to the end to watch my message if this isn't really your thing) Sorry I couldn't prepare a vloggy video this week. I've got tons of ideas and things planned out so be sure to subscribe and look forward to that! Make sure you like/favorite/comment if you thought this was neat and would like to see more! :) Less

Tuesday it was very hot out. It was almost 90 degrees outside and in the RV it was not much better. It was time to get out the air conditioner for my solar powered RV.nnI measured the AC unit and found that it just perfectly fits in the window of the RV living room like it was made for the spot. I had to remove the side accordion style flaps in order to get the AC unit into the frame though.nnI used a piece of pink foam insulation from my old camper to fit under the AC in the window frame. This takes some of the stress off both he AC unit and the window frame because the window frame is curved at the bottom side.nnI also used another piece of foam insulation cut to fit the top of the window frame and to hold the air conditioner in place. This keeps the AC from falling out the window and seals off the window nicely.nnI plugged the air conditioner into my pure sine wave inverter and turned it on. It started right up with no trouble on my solar power.nnSoon after though the sun went behind the trees and I did not want to badly drain my battery bank so I fired up my DC generator that sits outside the RV. This little DC generator has about a half gallon gas tank and runs for about 5 hours on a tank of gas. This is pretty good efficiency.nnI only used the AC to get it cool inside the RV and then shut it down though. In the evenings it is still dropping down in temperature so I did not need the air conditioner for very long.nnI think that with some high quality batteries, I would be able to run the AC all night with no problem and without the generator running at all. I believe that my golf cart batteries are a bit lower quality and they do not hold their rated Amp Hours.nnI have 1,600 Watts of solar panels so there is not problem at all running my 500 watt air conditioner unit. And the AC only cycles on and off about 30 - 50 % of the time so it is not running full time.nnIn full sunlight it is no problem even with my poor batteries.nnI will soon find out all the capabilities of my solar power system because we are probably in for a long hot summer.nnI had my neighbor Chris repair my garden tractor for me and then took him out to lunch and shopping for his help. Now I have my work horse running again and a using it daily for hauling stuff around the property. It is amazing how often I need to use such a machine.nnI worked a little bit on the garden again. Every day I am picking at it trying to get my garden fully planted. I hope to be completely self sufficient by the end of next year.nnnnFollow my daily progress on the path to self sufficiency on my off grid solar homestead.nhttps://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlUzPxYD3Ngr8yJw88YYZYzCSC8G3W0O2nnPlease donate to help keep The Off Grid Project going: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=3TQSWXLLRZ6HWnnJoin The Off Grid Project and The Do It Yourself World forum and share your ideas, tips and projects.nhttp://www.thediyworld.com/forumnnThe Off Grid Project is presented by The Do It Yourself World.nhttp://www.TheDIYworld.comnnExperiments and projects in off grid living, alternate energy, survival, hiking and more. Wednesday was a very bad day for power at the off grid homestead. In the morning hours my solar panels quit charging my batteries. Later in the afternoon my off grid solar powered RV got hit by lightning blowing out my AC wiring inside the RV walls.nnIn the morning hours it was very very hot as you have seen in the previous videos. My fridge was running full out for 5 hours. Suddenly my solar charge controller showed no output from the solar panels at all.nnI could not figure out what had happened. I had just wired up the battery bank properly and improved the overall performance of my solar power system. Then a few hours later the power suddenly goes out. I know I did the wiring properly because the solar panels were putting out a nice amount of power and I recorded it on video.nnMy fridge again drained my battery bank and I had to shut it down.nnI called Tristar and talked to their tech support for a while to see if the solar charge controller was defective. After extensive trouble shooting and testing, we found out that the charge controller is perfectly fine but my solar panels were not working.nnIt was the strangest thing. The solar panels were putting out 90 volts DC but no current. Absolutely no current. This is very strange. How can this be?nnI went out and fired up my DC generator to charge up my battery bank and also my HF generator to run my air conditioner. It was brutally hot outside and inside with near 90 percent humidity.nnIt was raining out pretty hard with thunder and lightning the whole afternoon so I was inside working on my websites. You just cant work outside in a thunderstorm so I figured I would work on my websites a bit and improve The Off Grid Project site.nnWhile I was sitting here working I saw a bright flash outside my RV window and saw like a photo flash inside the RV. Then I heard a little pop and my inverter blanked out and came back on again. Then came the very loud thunder right outside my RV.nnI immediately shut off the power inverter to protect it and I am happy that I did. One minute later lightning hit my RV again. This time the flash inside was brighter and the pop louder. The thunder was powerful and so loud.nnNow I was sitting in the dark with no AC power at all. My solar panels were not working and I just got hit by lightning directly.nnMy fridge was off and my food was getting warm.nnI could not go outside to check the solar panels due to the lightning. It was not safe.nnAll I could do is sit and wait out the storm. After a while there was a break in the lightning and I went outside on the porch to troubleshoot my AC problems.nnI can only guess that somehow the lightning hit my air conditioner on the roof of the RV, following the power lines down into the breaker box. From there it followed the line to my RV fridge and blew out the breaker and the wires.nnI now have no working AC wires on the whole side of my RV. The whole wall is dead.nnI had to run an extension cord through my RV from the bedroom out through the RV and onto the porch so I can run my electric fence, fridge and DSL internet line. For now though I had no power to run the fridge.nnIt was a dark, boring evening at The Off Grid Project, waiting for the next day.nnFollow my daily progress on the path to self sufficiency on my off grid solar homestead.nhttps://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlUzPxYD3Ngr8yJw88YYZYzCSC8G3W0O2nnPlease donate to help keep The Off Grid Project going: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=3TQSWXLLRZ6HWnnJoin The Off Grid Project and The Do It Yourself World forum and share your ideas, tips and projects.nhttp://www.thediyworld.com/forumnnThe Off Grid Project is presented by The Do It Yourself World.nhttp://www.TheDIYworld.comnnExperiments and projects in off grid living, alternate energy, survival, hiking and more.
