In which John discusses the complicated reasons why the United States spends so much more on health care than any other country in the world, and along the way reveals some surprising information, including that Americans spend more of their tax dollars on public health care than people in Canada, the UK, or Australia. Who's at fault? Insurance companies? Drug companies? Malpractice lawyers? Hospitals? Or is it more complicated than a simple blame game? UK divorce solicitor Andrew Woolley shares tips on how you can save money on your divorce.nnHear his top tips to avoid unnecessary costs.nnFind out more on our website http://www.family-lawfirm.co.uk.nnVideo transcript -nGetting divorced can be a costly business -- before you know it solicitors fees can be enormous. Is there anything you can do to keep control of these costs and save money on your divorce?nnHello I'm Andrew Woolley of family law specialists Woolley & Co. Thanks for watching today.nnThere's no question -- you can save money on solicitors fees if you are willing to take on some of the work yourself. You need to decide whether you value your time or your money more.nnMost solicitors bill by the hour for the work they do for you -- so if you can do some of that work -- for example producing financial documents in a structured way or completing Court paperwork -- like the legendary Form E financial disclosure document -- you will save a lot of their time and your money.nnNext -- don't call your lawyer every time a new thought or concern about your case pops into your head. Keep a list and maybe arrange to call them or email them once a week or once a day, rather than firing off multiple messages as things occur to you.nnGoing through a divorce can be an emotional roller coaster -- and that sometimes means you don't think as clearly as you would normally. Try to stop yourself from reacting instantly on emotions -- for example when your partner does something you object to and you suddenly decide you no longer want to accept their proposals for splitting the house or sharing your savings.nnThat split second decision and change of heart could probably be overturned if you slept on it.nnStop and take stock. Things may seem urgent -- but if you want to save money you need to be disciplined about when you contact your solicitor and how you use that time with them.nnWhen you do need to contact them have a very clear agenda for the call and be very clear what action you are asking them to take. All of this can minimise their time input but still get you the advice you need.nnBut, don't keep facts from your lawyer even if you think they don't help your case. It is important for your lawyer to know everything, as early as possible. It means they can give you essential advice early on which could save a lot of time later.nnAnother thing that will help you save money is to be reasonable. Don't argue over the small things. In my career as a divorce lawyer over the last 20 plus years I've seem couples spend £500 arguing over £100 -- don't do it. Be the better person and walk away.nnTry not to be entrenched in your positions -- don't set yourself a really fixed goal. "She's not getting this house" or "there's no way he's going to have the kids next Christmas" -- doesn't really get anyone anywhere and you could spend literally thousands arguing over it.nnIf you take extreme positions you're always going to have higher fees. In most cases you will have to compromise at some point, so why not start by being reasonable and less entrenched. It will certainly save you money.nnBuilding on this -- resolve the case quickly -- the faster you come to an agreement the less you will spend. If you can come to an agreement between yourselves you will definitely save.nnFinally -- get the right support from the right professionals. nnUsing an experienced divorce lawyer means you get the benefit of their years of experience. They understand the process and procedures involved so can often execute things more quickly -- and when time is money this is important. nnA less experienced or junior lawyer can take up to twice as long to handle complex, detailed cases. So do make sure the solicitor you choose has direct, relevant experience over a number of years in dealing with cases like yours.nnBut a solicitor isn't the only support you need. Relationship breakdown is an emotional time but don't use your solicitor as an emotional crutch. You may feel they are friendly and have a listening ear, which they certainly should have -- but they are not trained in dealing with the emotional side of relationship breakdown. nnYou can save money by seeking help with the emotional side of things -- whether it's from a good friend, a counsellor or therapist -- you can guarantee their charges will be a fraction of the costs of a qualified divorce lawyer. But do make sure you seek help from your lawyer on the legal aspects. Well meaning friends saying "you should claim X" can cost you a lot of money!nnDivorce doesn't have to cost the astronomical figures you'll see reported in some of the daily newspapers. You can take control and minimise the costs.nnI'm Andrew Woolley of family law specialists Woolley & Co -- find us online at family-lawfirm.co.uk.nnThanks for watching Less
