Michael Bierut is no stranger to writing about design. But writing about his own work didn’t come easy. “I’ve never done a book on my work. It’s uncomfortable, because it is hard to look at it all squarely and think, ‘Is this worth putting all together? Does it all add up to something?’”nnIt was only upon finding out that the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan was planning an exhibition dedicated to his work (which takes place this October) that Bierut was persuaded by his publishers, Thames & Hudson, to put a retrospective book togethernnThe result was the imaginatively titled How to: Use graphic design to sell things, explain things, make things look better, and (every once in a while) change the world published in August this year and launched at Design Indaba Conference 2015.nnOnce he had an idea for how to put it all together he approached the task in a disciplined and deliberate way: he sat down every day – same time, same place, got through a certain number of words and had the book ready in three months for the publishers.nn“Just to be paralised in front of a blank piece of paper – that doesn’t work. And then I realised, that’s actually how I design. That fear of making a mark wrong can stop you from making any progress at all. So almost every time I do a design project I say ‘OK – lets get all the bad ideas out of the way first’. You do a bad idea, and you know it’s a bad idea – but somehow accidentally in there is the key to something better.”nnBierut says he thought of the writing like he does his daily 5km run: “It’s just something you do.”nnHow to… encompasses 35 diverse projects, many of which have whole chapters dedicated to them. It also serves as a personal journal of Bierut’s life and career, from his childhood in Ohio, where people had “normal jobs” far-removed from creative industries, to joining Pentagram in New York where he has been a partner since 1990.nnWriting the book was also an opportunity to reflect on the entire design process from brief to realisation. Bierut reveals that for him, the most interesting part of his work is when the design is out in the world.nn“The thing that I think makes it really fascinating is that the design is always incomplete until it goes out in the world and people are using it who’ve never met you, who never saw the brief, who weren’t there to see the 20 versions. See more architecture and design movies at http://www.dezeen.com/moviesnnArchitect David Kohn explains how his studio transformed a neglected Barcelona apartment into World Interior of the Year 2013 in this exclusive video interview Dezeen filmed at Inside Festival in Singapore. nnCarrer Avinyó by London studio David Kohn Architects is a renovated apartment in a triangular block in Barcelona's Gothic Quarter.nn"The apartment is in a nineteenth-century apartment block on a very cute corner, but it was in a pretty poor state of repair," Kohn explains.nn"It was subdivided into many small rooms so there was no gathering space, nor was there any sense of this rather unusual triangular plan and it's relationship to the city."nn"There was all this potential, but it was all held back by the architecture."nnTo rectify this, Kohn's studio stripped away most of the apartment's internal partitions, creating an open-plan living space to make the most of the large windows and high ceilings.nn"We wanted to change the apartment to focus on the pleasure of gathering," explains Kohn. "The architecture of the apartment now is about creating the right setting for that kind of social encounter."nnTwo of the bedrooms are contained within a wooden tower at one end of the apartment, which Kohn describes as "a kind of scale replica" of a 1950s apartment block by Spanish architect Josep Antoni Coderch in the La Barceloneta neighbourhood of the city.nn"The bedrooms in this tower block have louvred windows so when you want to go to bed you can close the building," he says.nnThe apartment's most striking feature is its tiled floor, which is made up of 25 different triangular designs.nn"We basically did research on how we can make a tiled floor using traditional technologies that would be affordable for this project, but introduced something new," says Kohn.nn"We asked Mosaics Martí, who made all the tiles, to use varying amounts of green and red pigment. Now you see it laid, the apartment has a graded floor that goes from green at one end to red."nnKohn says that the transformation has been received well by the clients, two brothers who grew up in Barcelona but now live in London and Hong Kong.nn"The clients love it because because their lives were very pragmatic in the way they used the flat," he says.nn"What we were able to reintroduce into their lives was a pleasure of being in this interior, celebrating their time in Barcelona."nnInside Festival 2013 took place at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore from 2-4 October. The next Inside Festival will take place at the same venue from 1-3 October 2014. Award entries are open February to June 2013.   Less

This video, filmed by Julien Pierrefeu, is a documentation of a twenty minute performance at Edinburgh's Summerhall. The performance emerged from a two-week collaborative process informed by exercises and improvisations. We began the performance by letting the audience settle and relax into the ambience of the large hall. Then the recorded sound of the space was faded in and a bowed Tibetan bowl picked up on some of the unique resonances captured by the recording. The scraping of the bow on the bowl was developed and extended by scraping the audience's chairs with metal rods. This was carried outwards into the space by 'playing' the radiators, window frames and other features of the interior architecture. This merged into the sound of small fm radios rubbed on the outside of frame drums and later turned to the unfolding and manipulation of rolls of tinfoil above the listener's heads. Spatial movements included dispersal from the centre to the peripheries (the 'suburbs') caused, for example, by rolling wooden dowel and spring steel rods along the floor. These dispersals were followed by returns to the centre, using the sounds of ball bearings, small rivets and superballs rolled around the inside of frame drums, or small bell sounds made by domestic metal fittings, these mixed carefully with recordings of the same sounds captured in the space itself. Distant balloon bursts then punctuated the more complex textures before a semblance of arch-form brought the players back to scraping the listener's chairs and closing with the recorded sound of the space disappearing a niente, leaving the audience to settle once again into a contemplation of the ambient sounds of the space.   Less

So, I make them because I miss them too.”nnMeet Sutheera Denprapa, the ice cream designer and co-owner of Sky Ice, a small, artisan, all-natural ice cream shop based in Park Slope, Brooklyn. When Sutheera was a young girl, she hoped her parents would one day own an ice cream shop. That was her day dream, her little kid wish. It also tells you just how much she loves the stuff. As her husband, Jonathan explained, “few people are as passionate as Sutheera on ice cream”. I believe it. Get her talking about new flavors she’s inventing, and she could go on and on.nnI came across Sky Ice on a food message board one day last fall, someone was flipping out over an ice cream flavor they’d just tried, and it immediately piqued my interest: Sky Ice Black Sesame Seaweed. As soon as the words rolled off my tongue, I was half way out the door ready to taste it. It seemed so daring – such a curious, savory idea for a flavor. And I had to know it. I had to understand it. So off to Park Slope I went, to this little, corner ice cream shop that smelled, oddly, like Thai food.nnSky Ice, you see, doubles as a Thai restaurant, explaining the scent confusion and the unique flavor selection: lychee rose, mangosteen, Thai iced tea, Thai coffee, toasted coconut, cherry blossoms and green curry, to name a few. They even carried a hard to find durian flavor – the fruit my Filipino mom says, “smells like hell and tastes like heaven”. Right away, you understood that someone making the ice cream had roots, a more tropical taste vision. A new take on flavors based on a childhood somewhere far away. This wasn’t going to be a normal ice cream experience. This was something different. And it was Sutheera’s plan all along.nnSo enjoy her story! Some new flavors that’ll blow you away: wasabi peanut butter, dark chocolate campfire and their white miso with sliced almonds, you won’t want to miss. Definitely my new favorite ice cream shop. A new film in our maker series. Ben Harris is a traditional wooden boat builder based in Cornwall, UK. nnThis film documents Ben Harris’ love of wood work and boat building, how he acquired his skills, and how incredible it is to be able to take something that you’ve built with your own hands out onto the water and sail it across the sea.nnWho is Ben Harris?nnBen has always loved wood. His mother said that his first word was ‘log’. He has been working with wood throughout the UK since the age of 15. First as an assistant to a cabinet maker, where he started by sharpening the tools and clearing up. He then developed his skills in furniture making and his passion for wood and forestry by working in broadleaf woodlands. Later he tuned his skills in bespoke oak-framed carpentry and went on to establish a sawmill and oak framing business in Scotland, sourcing timber from the local estates. In 2005 Ben moved to Cornwall to study boatbuilding. He has been building boats and sailing them ever since.nnShooting from timber to tidennWe spent three days with Ben, staying with him in the idyllic handbuilt wooden cabin he lives in, in Constantine, Cornwall. When we arrived Wednesday, late afternoon, the plan was to make pumpkin soup and couldn’t believe our luck when we discovered the open fire cooking area in the garden. Within an hour after arriving we were already shooting some lovely material. The next day we covered the area around the house, the two workshops, the woods and recorded the voice-over. The real treat came on Friday morning when we took his self-built sailing yacht Alva out on Falmouth’s waters. First we covered the beautiful yacht from a motor boat with skipper Matthew Dale and dog Ruben, before we stepped on board ourselves and got close to the action.
