This is a documentary movie uncovering the process of building a wooden house with hand tools from local materials starting from forest till the living space.nn"I built my house from trees that I felled with an axe and two man crosscut saw in my own forest. I did it following the research of old carpenter's calendar that coniferous trees should be felled in January's first days when the new moon rises and the deciduous trees should be felled in the winter time during the old moon. In winter time trees are sleeping and the juice and moisture content is very low in them. As time passes timber felled in winter becomes light and strong.nnIn the building process I used mostly traditional carpenters hand tools - axes, hand saws, timber framing chisels and slicks, old Stanley planes, augers, draw knives and mostly human energy. All the ground work for fundaments and the basement earth digging was done by hand with shovels. The foundation consists mostly of bigger and smaller rocks and boulders. Lime, sand and concrete mixture are using only in small amounts - to hold the boulders together. The visible part over the ground level - boulder mosaic has been masoned with hand split local granite.nThe House has been built based on the western part of Latvia - Kurland/Kurzeme (German influence) historical wooden architecture typical technique - Timber Frame construction with sliding log walls between the posts. House is two carpentry technique union - Timber Frame (that is typical in France, Germany, Great Britain, North America and other countries) and traditional Latvian log building technique, between the logs using moss from the local swamp.nnIn the walls, timber frame and roof construction there I used only wood joints and wooden pegs to hold the main construction together - no nails, screws or steel plates. Walls are insulated with 250mm thick dry pine and larch shaving layer (leftover from the local cabinet makers workshop). Overall exterior wall thickness is 50cm. In the walls (except wind vapour breathable membrane over the roof) has not been used any plastic or modern synthetic materials.nnTo preserve the wood from the spoiling, fame posts, sills, top beams and final cladding boards are treated with fire and pine tar mixed with Tung oil. This wood preservation technique was adapted from the Japanese traditional wood preservation technique Shou Sugi Ban (焼杉板).nnExterior cladding boards recoating each 10-15 years with Tung oil and pine or birch tar mixture, the house can last more than 500 years. As an example is taken Norwegian stave churches that stands more than 500 years until nowadays.nnRoofing is three layer white oak shingles (each 10mm thick, 120mm wide and 720mm long) laid in two directional technique. Overall amount of shingles used is 15 000 pieces. Roof walls are insulated with ecological wood fibre wool and wood fibre panels. Over the wood fibre panels are plastered natural plaster - mixture of sand, clay powder, lime, linen fibre, salt, wheat flour. Overall thickness of the plaster is 20mm and over all amount of plaster used on the walls are 5000 kilos. It works also as thermal mass and improves energy performance.nnExterior measurements of the house is 6.5 x 13 meters. Living space in both floors are 120sq/m. The house is being heated with clay plastered brick bread oven and smaller oven made of clay tiles in the kitchen. To heat up both floors of the house, when outside it is minus 10 degrees (Celsium) only small oven is heated once a day. When freeze gets below -15, -20 C, we heat up the bread oven. Once it is heated, because of it’s thermal mass of 5 tons, it keeps the warmth 2-3 days. To heat up all the house (120 sq/m) in the winter time we use not more than 4 m3 of dry firewood. This is 2nd winter we are living there and we still heat up the house with the leftovers of lumber from the building process. With their armour-like SM props and outfits, the two artists perform a thoroughly restrained choreographic ritual, an ecstatic trance where each movement is hampered, halfway between pain and desire. This is the meaning of edging, a sexual practice consisting in reaching the tipping point of arousal and then in willingly interrupting the stimulation in order to delay the climax. To postpone the moment, to dance on the edge of the abyss, of orgasm, holding on, then off, not to sink into the madness of sex, into the folly of the world. For the world we get a glimpse of in Edging is on the road to ruin, running on empty but never taking the leap. Holding one's breath, slackening one's pace, suspending one's gesture. nn This hypnotic ceremony does not conceal the truth. As in The Blind Beast by Yasyzo Masumura, an influence Guillaume Marie acknowledges, the performance is enclosed in a claustrophobic space inside which the two dancers reach out for each other before the worst happens, if it ever does. First muffled, the atmosphere becomes oppressive. Sex is not enough, the setting gets darker. The original sountrack composed by Kazuyuki Kishino carries the whole performance along, letting us hear the pulse of a heart or the shiver running through one's flesh then building up pure chaos by a succession of crises and borderline states, on edge. nn Indeed, the worst doesn't happen because it is actually happening. It has happened but hasn't brought about any new world for us. There is no room for redemption or transcendance there, no god, no hereafter. It is this immaterial frontier, out of reach, symbolized by several minutes of laser mayhem ushering the finale, a psychedelic flood, a changing of scales, the end of a world and a technological climax. The laser in Edging mimicks the folly of men. It is a merciless flow that spares none, neither on stage nor in the audience. "It can be used as a tool to awaken our consciousness." And that is exactly what he has set out to do with OPENING, the veteran Ghostly artist's new immersive audio-visual project.nnAcross seven tracks of widescreen ambient music, 45 minutes of visuals shot over four years in multiple countries, seven photographs, and a multi-sensory, multiple channel live performance, Willits has created something which might better be thought of as an experience than a simple album. OPENING features Willits' latest music since Ancient Future, his 2012 collaboration with Japanese pianist Ryuichi Sakamoto, and his recent production and mastering work on Tycho's “Awake”. The vibrant, enveloping sounds we've come to expect from him are on full display. The quiet majesty of "Vision" ushers us into the sacred world Willits creates, a living universe that billows and heaves alongside slow-grooving songs like "Clear" and "Connect," or with the textural minutiae and harmonic subtleties in "Ground" and “Now”. Closing out the album, "Wide" and "Release" offer the listener a gentle comedown through 15 minutes of transcendent audio, with Willits' delicate guitar manipulations breathing life into the aether of finely textured atmospheres and soft-glowing synths.nnThe other integral facet to the experience of OPENING is Willits' visual work. After building a library of images from his travels around California, Hawaii, Japan, and Thailand, Willits is unveiling an abstract narrative film, with seven scenes that correspond with the seven songs from the album along with seven limited edition photo prints. The 45-minute film interfuses music and a first-person perspective of meditative scenes -- inspiring nature sections reminiscent of the films Baraka, Koyaanisqatsi and Planet Earth -- to create the space of OPENING.nnWillits says, "There are no actors or dialogue in this film. The audience and their perception is the main character, and everyone's imagination is going to create some meaning that's relevant to their own experience. In his position, he is responsible for the acquisition of new works and advancing the photography exhibition program at both the Tate and Tate Modern. Baker studied art history at the University College London and received his PhD in 2002. He was a Henry Moore Fellow at UCL and a 2003-2004 Gould Fellow recipient at Princeton University in history of photography. Prior to joining the Tate, he was Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Nottingham, where he taught history of photography, surrealism and contemporary art. He is also the chair of the Oxford Art Journal’s editorial group.nnBaker has been praised for significantly expanding the Tate’s relationship to photography and photographers. In evaluating potential photographic acquisitions for the museum, he considers how the works align with the painting, sculpture and other media already in the collection. Westergaard werd in 2005 bekend door een cartoon in de Deense krant Jyllands Posten, waarin de moslimprofeet Mohammed werd afgebeeld met een bom in zijn tulband. De cartoon was onderdeel van een reeks van 12 tekeningen over de islam. De publicatie leidde tot grote controverse en rellen, en de cartoon van Westergaard groeide uit tot een icoon. SOTT 'Earth Changes' video summary of extreme weather events and environmental indicators of 'planetary upheaval' (seismic, volcanic, etc) in May 2015.nnWinter in the northern hemisphere officially ended in March, and yet May 2015 saw heavy snowfalls in parts of Norway, Russia, China and the US. Europe recorded its highest ever (official) May and June temperature - 44°C in Spain - during a brief heatwave, before the mercury plunged to as low as 8°C the following week. Like much of Siberia, northern China went from warm, dry weather - including sandstorms and wildfires - in April, to blizzards by the end of May, while spring snowfall and cold temperature records were broken in Russia.nnThere were at least four major tornado outbreaks in the US last month, generating some 460 tornado reports. Will the US break its 2011 record for highest number of tornadoes in one year? With the storms came hail, rain, and snow - lots of it. Texas was inundated with record-breaking rainfall that bought its 3-year-long drought to a chaotic end. There were also destructive tornadoes in New Zealand, Mexico, and Germany, which saw two tornado outbreaks.nnCalifornia's record-breaking drought continues, but Los Angeles saw its daily rainfall record smashed in May. Other parts of the US under water were Louisiana, Oklahoma and Alaska, which saw its 'worst flooding in decades', in part due to yet another bizarre spring heatwave. An 'apocalyptic' storm in Moscow flooded streets, while hailstorms turned streets into rivers of ice in Spain, Mexico, and Turkey, where cars were washed away in the coastal city of Izmir. Several huge sinkholes opened up - in the US, Turkey, the Canary Islands and Russia - swallowing gardens, street intersections, golf greens, and cars.nnAnother deadly earthquake - officially considered an aftershock - rocked Nepal on May 12th, just three weeks after the country was flattened by its worst seismic event in 80 years.
