Dark suggestive spaces full of embodied memory: Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller will provide an overview of their works and practice, focusing on the exhibition Lost in the Memory Palace, a selected survey exhibition opening June 20th, 2014 at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Lost in the Memory Palace takes as its focus ‘the room,’ with a selection of Cardiff and Miller's work from the mid-1990s to today, presenting key early installations such as The Dark Pool (1995) and The Muriel Lake Incident (1999) and recent works including The Killing Machine (2007) and Experiment in F# Minor (2013). The exhibition offers an opportunity to consider the room as a metaphor in Cardiff and Miller’s work, as an offering shelter from a stormy world, a place to withdraw and to convalesce; or a site of mystery and danger, and in some instances, of death. nnJanet Cardiff (b. 1957, Brussels, Ontario, Canada) and George Bures Miller (b. 1960, Vegreville, Alberta, Canada) create immersive multimedia works usually involving sound. nnRecent solo exhibitions include, the Art Gallery of Ontario, Akademie der Kunste, Berlin; Luhring Augustine, New York; The Hamburger Banhoff Museum für Gegenwart, Berlin; Modern Art Oxford; The Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh; The Miami Art Museum; The Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona; and Mathildenhöhe, Darmstatdt.nnThey were participants in dOCUMENTA (13) in Kassel, Germany, presenting 2 new works. Additionally, their work has been presented by several major institutions, including MOMA, New York; P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York; The Tate Modern, London; San Francisco MOMA; Artangel, London; Public Art Fund, New York; Benesse Art Site Naoshima, Japan; and Inhotim Contemporary Art, Brasil. nnRepresenting Canada at the 2001 Venice Biennale, Cardiff and Miller received the Biennale's Premio Speciale (Special Prize) as well as The 4th Benesse Prize. On July 11, 2012, Gary W. Gallagher delivered a Banner Lecture entitled "More Important Than Gettysburg: The Seven Days Campaign as a Turning Point." Ever since the Civil War ended, it has been a popular pastime to look for dramatic turning points in that conflict. For many, the battle of Gettysburg represents the great event that tipped the balance toward the North. Key political, diplomatic, social, and military issues, however, were at stake in the summer of 1862 as Robert E. Lee and George B. McClellan faced off in the Seven Days Battles. Gary W. Gallagher argues that Lee's victory had a profound effect on the conflict and that perhaps the series of battles waged on the Virginia Peninsula should be regarded as a major turning point of the war. Dr. Gallagher is a professor of history at the University of Virginia. His most recent book is "The Union War." The student film scene was getting ready to explode, and it knew it. nnThe details on when this documentary, The New Cinema, were made are a little vague. IMDb lists it as 1968, but it contains clips from Easy Rider, which was released in 1969. It's possible it had early access, especially given the inclusion of interviews with Peter Fonda; but regardless it did a remarkable job of getting on camera a wide number of the people who would help transform cinema over the course of the following decades including Dustin Hoffman, Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate and Andy Warhol and most interesting to us, Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas.nnThe film was directed by Gary Young, who is also credited as the Second Unit Director on 1:42.08. Information about Gary Young is scarce beyond what IMDb lists, which is scarce in itself. Given that he worked on 1:42.08, it's not unreasonable to think that he was perhaps in Lucas's class, but I've so far been unable to get a hold of a list of students from that class (beyond the famous ones). However, he was Assistant Cameraman on on Monte Hellman's Ride in the Whirlwind (1966), although that doesn't preclude him also attending USC. If anyone knows more, I'd love to know, as he seems to subsequently have mostly vanished from the film scene, holding only one other credit on IMDb.nnAlso remarkably, it was edited by Paul Golding (who posted it on YouTube), another classmate of Lucas's, who also worked with Lucas on several student films (including The Emperor) while they were both at USC.nnAccording to the description on YouTube it apparently never aired on TV, but certainly provides a fascinating look into the (slightly self-obsessed) young filmmakers of the late 60s, and along with Gene Youngblood's 1971 interview with George Lucas it provides a fantastic look into Lucas's early career and early determination to rebel against the prevailing forces of Hollywood.nnI believe part of this film was used in Peter Biskind's somewhat gossipy, but nevertheless must-see Easy Riders, Raging Bull (2003).nnSkip to about 10 minutes into the first part to get to the Coppola/Lucas bit.   Less

I wanted to assemble a video essay with a rapidfire list of nominees of great moments of editing-as-punctuation in film.
