For four decades the Queen of the boogie-woogie piano, Marcia Ball, has been gracing the stage worldwide. She's one the top female blues performers in the world, bringing the New Orleans/Mississippi Delta style to her unique brand of music. "It's what I know," she says, "I've been playing most of my life and I've been very fortunate." Marcia is also an activist, advocating for health care for musicians through the New Orleans Musicians Clinic and a similar program in her adopted hometown of Austin, TX. She also lends her voice to projects to reclaim the Louisiana wetlands and restoring New Orleans. In this week's edition of Extended Play she talks about her music, Irma Thomas, the plight of the wetlands and gives us a fabulous set of New Orleans style blues. Less

This interview with Jeff Mills was the first-ever Red Bull Music Academy lecture. It took place in Berlin in 1998.nnWatch more lectures from the Red Bull Music Academy: win.gs/1nSnW1nnFind more about the Red Bull Music Academy: redbullmusicacademy.com nnJeff Mills is undoubtedly one of the founding fathers of techno music. Starting out as radio DJ The Wizard on Detroit’s WJLB, Mills eventually met Mad Mike Banks and Robert Hood. What followed were some of the most important tracks in the evolution of techno. Performing in uniforms comprised of ski masks and black combat suits, Underground Resistance captured the revolutionary imagination of the dance world. A deal with the German label Tresor soon grew out of some UR licensing and Mills later set up Axis. Mills hasn’t looked back since. Whether it’s his ever minimal yet highly complex live sets, his rescoring of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis or his multimedia revisiting of The Rings Of Saturn, he always treads a careful line between dance music and art. Can we really end poverty? Contrary to what you may have heard, we know how to cure poverty. The real question is why aren't we doing it? As Christians we are deeply committed to helping the poor. Unfortunately our good intentions don’t always translate into good outcomes for those who need it most. To put it bluntly, sometimes our helping hurts. In this lecture, Dr. Jay Richards will be sharing the ten essential principles that will end poverty.nnOn February 25th, Impact 360 Institute welcomed Dr. Richards to our campus to kick off our spring speakers series (visit www.impact360institute.org to stay up to date on all of our events). A well respected scholar, Dr. Richards speaks globally on questions of economics and poverty and is the author of Money, Greed, and God: Why Capitalism Is the Solution and Not the Problem and New York Times best-selling books, Infiltrated, and together with co-author James Robison, Indivisible: Restoring Faith, Family, and Freedom Before It’s Too Late.nnThe good news is that a new generation is motivated to do something about poverty. This lecture will move us beyond just feeling good about helping the poor to doing good for the poor. Caring for the poor is close to the heart of God and that is why Impact 360 Institute is pleased to make this event available free to the public. Less

He discusses the tensions between narrative, truth, and justice in the context of his reporting on immigration issues, focusing on the collateral damage done to undocumented immigrants who are deported. Seth also talks about his investigations into the thousands of children stuck in the foster care system after their parents are deported, and his work on deportees who die in the US-Mexico borderlands attempting to return to their families. When she co-founded the online clothing retailer ModCloth, Susan Gregg Koger had never worked in retail and had no connections with the fashion industry. She had no experience that helped her write a business plan or how to source inventory for her site. But being a “rookie” turned out to be asset as she built her company without the constraints of tradition or routine. Since founding the company in college, Koger and her team have innovated in the online retail world with unconventional tactics like asking her customers to select what dresses to stock, and using user photos on product pages.nn“Approaching a problem from a rookie point of view enables you to innovate just because you don’t how its usually done,” she says. The result? The company now is located in three cities and boasts over $100 million in sales. Not bad for a newbie.nnAbout Susan Gregg KogernnSusan Gregg Koger is the co-founder and chief creative officer of ModCloth, an online retailer known for its innovative social shopping experience, unique apparel and décor, and wide range of styles sourced from independent designers around the world. As ModCloth’s CCO, Susan employs her creative edge and love for vintage to inform all things ModCloth; from its careful curation of remarkable goods, to the look and feel of the site and mobile apps. In 2013, ModCloth was recognized as one of Fast Company‘s “Most Innovative Companies,” and Susan was listed in Forbes‘ “30 Under 30″ and Refinery29‘s “30 Under 30: San Francisco.” Less

This 25 minute documentary, with contributions from Bishop Mark Davies of the Shrewsbury Diocese, shows how the famous “Dome of Home” church – the Church of Sts Peter, Paul and Philomena – is thriving under the care of Canon Amaury Montjean and the Institute of Christ the King.nnThe documentary has extensive coverage of the Latin Mass (also known as the Tridentine rite, or as the “extraordinary form” of the Mass), and also discusses the way other sacraments are celebrated in the church, with excerpts from an extraordinary form baptism. Bruce Damer takes the 2012 Palenque Norte audience at the Burning Man Festival on a far flung journey into what he calls his practice of “global multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, multi-technic shamanism” where you “put yourself on the shelf” and dive deeply into the worlds of Pentagon think tanks, NASA mission designers, the tribal cultures of Pakistan, the Swiss, Egyptologists, IT professionals, and Christian Evangelicals, to come back with the true alchemical gold. With apologies to Terence McKenna, he says “there is no dominator culture” and that if we aren’t careful we can collectively fall for cartoon epistemologies, chase chains of weaker and weaker claims, and become a victims of our own delusions, and fall prey to others’ unsubstantiated theories. Bruce advises everyone to become their own best skeptic and develop “critical intelligence”. If someone says something that strikes you as flaky or just doesn’t feel right, Bruce suggests that you think it through before you pass on their meme.nnCheck out all of the projects Bruce talks about at his personal site at: www.damer.com Less

We’ve decided to end this crazy beautiful experiment called RSWX with the album that started the whole trip and was the unexpected gift that kept on giving.nWhile we watched it from the sideline lead a life of its own, unintentionally capturing a zeitgeist and becoming that weird thing that is an underground hit via word of mouth, we had already continued on many other musical ventures and have never really looked back until now, but we’re glad we have, as it’s a fitting way to end this project based on sharing (a small part of) our record collection.nnWe’d like to thank everyone involved from the animators to the coders and everyone in between who worked their asses of to make this labour of love a reality, but of course especially the viewers (or listeners if you will). Your massive response and attention has almost bankrupted us in bandwidth costs but it was totally worth it!nSo here it is: 12 yrs, 2 months and 24 days later, we have re-united 45 tracks in 1 single hour of visual mayhem.
