Overnight, the Atacama Desert in Chile, the 'driest place on Earth', became one of the wettest. Melting snow combined with unseasonal rains to flood parts of Northern India, the U.S. Midwest and Western Europe, while flooding also hit Eastern Africa and Australia. One of the strongest ever cyclones in the South Pacific devastated Vanuatu, while Super-Typhoon Maysak bore down on the Philippines at the end of the month. Just as Americans living in Tornado Alley were wondering where 'tornado season' had gone, a powerful multi-vortex twister scourged Moore, Oklahoma (again).nnWith snow on the ground in 49 out of 50 U.S. states on March 1st, all month long heavy snowfall continued across the eastern half of North America. Boston broke its winter snowfall record - 9 feet of snow... and the same amount fell in ONE DAY in Central Italy last month! The extreme cold in the U.S. Northeast continued to set record-breaking temperatures, and brought sea ice up to previously unseen levels. No matter the season or location, tropics or desert, hail fell everywhere: several inches in Southern California and Saudi Arabia, TWO FEET in Bogota, Colombia, and softball-sized hail in Eastern Australia. From space, large meteor fireballs were seen from across the U.S. Mountain West, Central Europe, and Western Australia, while the planet was bathed in green and pink as the strongest auroras during this solar cycle reached extreme latitudes in both hemispheres. nnWildfires in the Southern Hemisphere hit Valparaiso, Chile (again), and 'fire-nadoes' several stories tall formed outside Cape Town, South Africa. Spectacular volcanic eruptions last month included Villarica volcano in Chile spewing lava 1km into the night sky, Turrialba volcano in Costa Rica having its most powerful eruption in 20 years, and Colima volcano in Mexico sending ash 3km high. The combined effects of these climate extremes are giving rise to ever more mass animal deaths, with notable fish and bird kills along the Western Americas last month. Amy meanwhile, is in love with the Empire State Building, an altar rail in a church and a fairground ride. nnThere's no denying that this is strong stuff. You may find it hard to contain your mirth, especially when Erika is astride her picket fence in her bedroom or Amy is lying on the ground, kissing the fairground ride, her face smeared in grease and saying she can taste his juices. While there are clearly deep-rooted psychological problems and other issues that both women need to tackle, they passionately believe that their desires are right for them, so frankly who are we to judge? nnYet again this instalment verges on spoof and has heavy shades of freak show, but if you can possibly ignore that, then the programme is a worthwhile exercise. Over the last few years you may of noticed the trend of DJ’s playing 45’s. Why it became so popular I don’t know. Personally a record is a record to me, but in this world there are a few people who playing 45’s means the world to them.nnTake Diamond D for instance, Many years ago I got to work with him on a show in London where for the first time I saw him playing 45’s, it was jaw dropping performance. Later I was in New York visiting Lord Finesse. I put the question to the funky man, do you go for the 45 thing? Finesse replied ‘No Pritt, that’s not me, I have 45’s but that’s Diamond thing, that’s what he does and has done since he was a kid.nnDiamond himself told me that this is something he has been doing since the age of 11, and if you have seen him perform, all that practice and real love for music and hip hop shows. Last week Diamond D returned to the UK and performed at Camden’s ‘Size Doesn’t Matter’. He gave me a call and asked to join him for the show. Little did I know that he would again deliver a real master class in cutting 45’s. Diamond was amazing his skills have improved where my first thought was if I cannot do this using Serato I may as well give up.nnAs big as Diamond D is he is ridiculously fast on the turntables, real fast. Light fingers and years of practice and knowing his music sets him apart from most DJs who are doing this 45 thing. He, 45 King, Evil D and DJ Scratch are in a league of their own. I was privileged to sit with him in the hotel room where we prepared the records for the set. There is a process and routine he goes through for every performance. He meticulously arranges his records into 3 groups. This is someone that takes his music very seriously. nnIn all my years following DJ’s and practicing my self, in my direct circle of friends, there are not may DJ who navigate through the records like Diamond, Jazzy J, P-Brothers and Pogo. I’m like most DJ who cut doubles on the 1, Diamond can go from any point in the track. He can go off the 2 or 3 bar of the beat, not an easy thing to do, if you don’t believe me, try it and play a set for 2 hours, his timing is perfect. Even more impressive is his ability to recover when things go wrong. I witnessed him have problem with his needles whilst cutting up a record and swap the needles and continue cutting up the record unfazed, he did the same thing when the record was jumping. He does not panic he just gets on with it.nnIn attendance on the evening where a number of London’s DJ’s who with respect are great DJ’s but like my self you could see it on their faces were astonished and taken back by Diamond performance, it was a true master class. I can not take anything away from DJ Thor and Bee Shiver who deserves much props, he is one of those out standing DJ who’s mixed where seamless on the night Here is footage from the night. SOTT 'Earth Changes' video summary of extreme weather events and environmental indicators of 'planetary upheaval' (seismic, volcanic, etc) in June 2015.nnWith the dollar-led global economy on the verge of systemic collapse, increasing chaos in the political and social spheres is mirrored by climate chaos. In June 2015, thousands of wildfires broke out across western North America, with the entire continent on course for its fieriest season in recorded history. June is the peak of tornado season in the US, but the intensity of the storms that brought them was stunning. The worst death toll from a tornado occurred in central China, where a waterspout capsized a cruise ship on the Yangtze River.nnThe record May rainfall in Texas and Louisiana... just kept falling out of the sky last month, with the Red River reaching its highest level in 70 years. Parts of southern China also saw their worst flooding in over 70 years. Localized flash-flooding struck the world over, not least in Accra, capital of Ghana, where hundreds were killed when a gas station exploded. Tbilisi, Georgia, was similarly impacted when a 'wall of water' washed through, killing 20 people and half the city zoo's animals. Other capitals inundated in deluges last month include Ankara, Bangkok, and Madrid, while Oman saw 5 years' worth of rain... in a single day. nnIntense monsoon rains last month also killed thousands of wild animals at a sanctuary in India, while thousands of pigs drowned in southern China's floods. Animal die-offs included millions of crabs on the Californian coast, and hundreds of thousands of antelope in Kazakhstan. The heatwave that killed thousands in India in May moved into Pakistan last month, where it killed some 1,200 people. In normally hot, dry climates, there were yet more bizarre scenes of inches - and sometimes FEET - of hail trapping cars on roads. While Alaska baked in record hot temperatures, Norway had five times more snow cover than normal for June.nnIn addition to auroras and noctilucent clouds being seen much further south than usual, strange objects or lights in the sky were caught on camera, including three objects leaving Earth's atmosphere. Strong seismic activity came in the form of another powerful eruption of Indonesia's Mount Sinabung, while Malaysia was hit with its strongest earthquake since 1976. There is also incredible footage of enormous sinkholes opening up across the US in June, swallowing moving cars, roads, driveways, backyards, and golf greens. The student film scene was getting ready to explode, and it knew it. nnThe details on when this documentary, The New Cinema, were made are a little vague. IMDb lists it as 1968, but it contains clips from Easy Rider, which was released in 1969. It's possible it had early access, especially given the inclusion of interviews with Peter Fonda; but regardless it did a remarkable job of getting on camera a wide number of the people who would help transform cinema over the course of the following decades including Dustin Hoffman, Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate and Andy Warhol and most interesting to us, Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas.nnThe film was directed by Gary Young, who is also credited as the Second Unit Director on 1:42.08. Information about Gary Young is scarce beyond what IMDb lists, which is scarce in itself. Given that he worked on 1:42.08, it's not unreasonable to think that he was perhaps in Lucas's class, but I've so far been unable to get a hold of a list of students from that class (beyond the famous ones). However, he was Assistant Cameraman on on Monte Hellman's Ride in the Whirlwind (1966), although that doesn't preclude him also attending USC. If anyone knows more, I'd love to know, as he seems to subsequently have mostly vanished from the film scene, holding only one other credit on IMDb.nnAlso remarkably, it was edited by Paul Golding (who posted it on YouTube), another classmate of Lucas's, who also worked with Lucas on several student films (including The Emperor) while they were both at USC.nnAccording to the description on YouTube it apparently never aired on TV, but certainly provides a fascinating look into the (slightly self-obsessed) young filmmakers of the late 60s, and along with Gene Youngblood's 1971 interview with George Lucas it provides a fantastic look into Lucas's early career and early determination to rebel against the prevailing forces of Hollywood.nnI believe part of this film was used in Peter Biskind's somewhat gossipy, but nevertheless must-see Easy Riders, Raging Bull (2003).nnSkip to about 10 minutes into the first part to get to the Coppola/Lucas bit.
