L’huile depalme est partout ! Quels sont les risques d’une telle consommation ? De la Normandie à l’Indonésie, Emilie Lançon a mené l’enquête sur ce gras universel qui nous envahit chaque année un peu plus. Selon Irène Margaritis, chef de l’unité risques et nutrition à l’Anses (Agence nationale de Sécurité sanitaire), « Ses teneurs en acides gras saturés sont élevées et exposent à un risque de maladies cardio-vasculaires » ! Yves Daudigny, sénateur PS de l’Aisne, mène lui aussi la bataille. Il a proposé de surtaxer l’huile de palme mais son texte, appelé l’amendement Nutella, n’a pas été voté. Le film revient sur la composition de la célèbre pâte à tartiner. Un pot de Nutella, c’est, notamment, 55 % de sucre, 17 % d’huile de palme, 13 % de noisettes et 7 % de cacao. Mais peut-on faire autrement ? Walter Bovetti, un Italien amoureux du chocolat, fabrique, en Dordogne, de la pâte à tartiner sans un soupçon d’huile de palme mais avec 40 % de noisettes. Evidemment, son produit est plus cher mais aussi bien meilleur. Même la grande distribution commence à lever le pied sur l’huile de palme. Système U l’a supprimée de ses produits. Findus y a aussi renoncé, tout comme les biscuits Saint-Michel et le pain de mie Jacquet. Il faut dire qu’au niveau environnement, l’addition est également très salée. Toutes les minutes, c’est l’équivalent de 6 terrains de foot qui disparaissent en Indonésie. Des pans entiers de forêts millénaires sont dévastés pour laisser la place à la culture des palmiers. Pour se donner bonne conscience, un label a été créé qui certifie une huile de palme dite « durable ». He provided details of slave markets in Washington, DC, as well as describing at length cotton cultivation on major plantations in Louisiana.nnPublished soon after Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin, Northup's book sold 30,000 copies and was considered a bestseller. It went through several editions in the nineteenth century. Supporting Stowe's fictional narrative in detail, Northup's first-hand account of his twelve years of bondage proved another bombshell in the national political debate over slavery leading up to the Civil War, drawing endorsements from major Northern newspapers, anti-slavery organizations, and evangelical groups. Amidst protests from farmers, scientists, consumers and basic sectors, GM corn was commercialized in the Philippines in 2003. At present, there are about 8 varieties of single, stacked-trait and pyramided GM corn approved by the government for direct planting. It is now planted in about 685,317 hectares of agricultural land allotted for corn.nnThe film documentary is based on the study done by MASIPAG on the socio-economic impacts of GM corn on farmers' lives and livelihood after more than 10 years of commercialization. In the film, GM corn farmers relate how they became indebted because of the rising cost of GM corn seeds and increasing cost and quantity of inputs being used. The film also shared the farmers account on the effect of GM corn farming such as emergence of new pests, soil erosion, corn contamination and human and animal health impacts. Farmers also shared the difficulty to go back to traditional or organic corn farming because of the loss of traditional seeds and practices replaced by GM corn farming and the effects of neighboring GM corn plantations. The third year of the Civil War saw slavery being destroyed by the sword and by Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. Wherever the Union army went tens of thousands of African Americans fled the plantations where they had been enslaved and sought freedom behind the Union lines. No one was prepared for the numbers that arrived and particularly how quickly they came. As one chaplain wrote, "it was like the oncoming of cities." The army was forced to improvise and established camps for the newly freed people but it was not trained or equipped to facilitate the transition of hundreds of thousands from slavery to freedom. According to Wikipedia, there are 129 restrooms in only 77 of the system's 468 stations. What makes finding a useful restroom even tougher is that many of them are being locked up and turned into storage areas for the workers.
