Heated arguments broke out between Nihangs (warriors) from Ludhiana, escalating into clashes and a brief exchange of gunfire. Police officers intervened quickly to disarm both sides and arrest 12 suspects. At least one Nihang was seriously wounded during the fighting and had to be taken away to receive medical attention. The horse-racing event occurs every year on the day after Diwali, drawing in 70 different groups of Nihangs and around 2,000 participants from all over Punjab. Three days before the Prime Minister meets his Pakistani counterpart in the US, it is believed Muslim terrorists dressed in army fatigues have killed at least 12 people in a police station and an Army cantonment in Jammu and Kashmir this morning, among them a Lieutenant Colonel of the Indian Army. Among the over dozen people injured is the commanding officer of the 16 Cavalry, an armoured corp unit. The police said four heavily armed terrorists first attacked a police station in Hiranagar of Kathua district in Jammu, killing four cops and two civilians. They escaped and surfaced in the Army cantonment in the adjoining Samba district, where they have reportedly killed at least six Army personnel. Two of the fidayeen or suicide attackers have also been shot dead in a gun battle that is still is on in the 16 Cavalry cantonment. Army choppers are hovering over site. CRPF and police personnel have joined the Army in the attempt to flush out the rest of the terrorists. The audacious attack comes only a day after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh confirmed that he will meet Pakistan's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the US on the sidelines of a United Nations session. The two leaders are expected to meet on Sunday. Calling the attacks "one more in a series of provocations and barbaric actions by the enemies of peace", the PM said it won't derail the dialogue with Pakistan. Kashmir watchers say terrorists tend to step up attacks just before a round of talks between India and Pakistan. The police said the terrorists drove up to the Hiranagar police station in an auto rickshaw at about 6.45 this morning. They shot the sentry at the gate, walked into the police station and shot dead three cops. They then escaped in a truck that they hijacked after killing the driver and drive along the national highway, where they eventually abandoned the truck and went to Samba in another vehicle. Hiranagar in Kathua is about a kilometre from the border with Pakistan and a top cop said the terrorists could have infiltrated into India recently. Intelligence sources said all units in the region had been alerted that a fidayeen group had entered Jammu. This is the first fidayeen attack in the Jammu region of the state in over a decade. As we drove on, we came across another herd and a stallion from the first herd came barreling past us, full steam, to go warn the other herd. He stays with them until he gets them all rounded up and running away from us. Pretty cool stuff to watch... The female primate is in charge of leading 32 goats out to graze on nearby hills and back home again. Originally arriving at the farm wounded and alone in 2008, Mani was nursed back to health and became a mother of three. Depsite her responsibilities as a parent, Mani still manages to do her day-job as the head shepherd, with the youngest Kuttoos attached to her tummy as she jumps from goat to goat. Every morning at the Palagapandy estate farm the goats are taken out to graze, but as they head towards the forest, no human shepherd accompanies them.
