"Former President Jimmy Carter on Thursday praised President Barack Obama’s “political courage” in reestablishing relations with Cuba. “This is the kind of thing that has been long overdue, and I’m very proud and grateful that President Obama has shown such wisdom and also, I think, political courage in taking these long overdue steps,” Carter told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” Carter, who also tried to mend relations with Cuba as president, said the Cuban people will be the main beneficiaries of a new relationship — not the country’s rulers — and he added that the move will be “good for both countries.” “I think this openness of communication will be much better, there will obviously be more trade, commerce, visitation back and forth, which I think will promote democracy,” Carter said."* The Young Turks hosts Cenk Uygur breaks it down. *Read more here: http://www.politico.com/story/2014/12... The US government has dismissed Russia’s allegations regarding the Turkish government’s oil trade with Daesh terrorists. State Department Spokesman Mark Toner said Washington has found no evidence of Ankara’s involvement in smuggling oil across its borders. He noted that the US believes Daesh was selling oil at the wellheads to middlemen who in turn were involved in smuggling the oil across the frontier into Turkey. Earlier in the day, Russia’s Defense Ministry released satellite images showing oil shipments crossing Syria-Turkey border. The ministry said it has proof that Turkish President Rejep Tayyip Erdogan and his family are benefiting from the illegal smuggling of oil from Daesh-held territory in Syria and Iraq. Russian President Vladimir Putin has leveled similar charges against Ankara, saying it’s hard to believe the Turkish leadership is unaware of the issue. Erdogan has denied the allegations and pledged to step down if Russia’s allegations are proven. Security is tight near the United Nations building in the Yemeni capital Sanaa. The UN closed its offices after reports of potential car bombs in the city. Police troops in Yemeni capital Sanaa have been on high alert since an attack last week on the Yemeni Defence Ministry compound.Disturbing CCTV footage has been released of the assault in which 52 people were killed and 167 injured. The dramatic images show a suicide bomber and gunmen attacking a hospital inside the compound on the morning of December 5 as ministry staff were arriving for work. The suicide bomber can be seen driving a car packed with explosives into the gate of the compound, followed by a huge burst of flames. Gunmen in another vehicle sped in and opened fire on soldiers, doctors and nurses working at the hospital. The footage also shows an attacker arming a grenade’s fuse then lobbing it into a group of workers before running away. The grenade can be seen exploding. The US military raised its alert status in the region after the coordinated strikes. Yemen is home to what Washington has called the main stronghold of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). Meanwhile, 15 people on their way to a wedding in Yemen were killed in an air strike after their party was mistaken for an AQAP convoy, according to local security officials. One security official said: “An air strike missed its target and hit a wedding car convoy, ten people were killed immediately and another five who were injured died after being admitted to the hospital.” Yemen is among a handful of countries where the US acknowledges using drones, although it does not comment on the practice. Human Rights Watch said in a detailed report in August that US missile strikes, including armed drone attacks, had killed dozens of civilians in Yemen. Source: euronews (english) Less

A bomb attack on the Interior Ministry in Kabul has killed at least four police officers on Wednesday. Security sources have said that the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber, wearing an Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) uniform to avoid security checks. The explosion happened hours after Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid gave a warning to Afghans to stay away from Saturday's presidential election on Saturday, claiming election workers and polling stations would be targeted. Footage released by the Iraqi Ministry of Defense shows the Iraqi army conducting airstrikes against positions of ISIL in Iraq. The strikes targeted ISIL control HQ, resulting in the killing of many of its adherents, according to the Iraqi Ministry of Defense. Iraqi forces have reportedly cut off all ISIL communication and supply lines to Tikrit, after forcing the militants to retreat to Salahuddin. Wednesday's airstrikes were part of a large-scale offensive on Tikrit, aimed at liberating the strategically important city. The next step will be to "quickly confront ISIL troops in Tikrit itself,' according to an Iraqi high-ranked military official. Less

Iraq's defense ministry has confirmed the death of a senior ISIL commander, Abu Alaa al-A'fari in an airstrike in Tal Afar, west of the city of Mosul. The ministry says A'fari was killed after the air raid targeted an ISIL gathering in al-Ayadheh in Tal afar. A'fari is said to be the acting leader of the Takfiri group after its leader Ibrahim Samarraee commonly known as Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi reportedly sustained a spinal injury in an airstrike back in March. Since then, A'fari had a dominant role in the terror organization's leadership. Like al-Baghdadi, he had been a member of al-Qaeda before forming the ISIL. In 2006, A'fari was reportedly arrested by the US army and imprisoned in an American jail in Iraq, but was later released.
