After researching the online community of the LoveStories brand, this video series came to its existence. The video gives insight into a loving relationship from the point of view of 'the boyfriend'. This time they are armed with dildos, fake vaginas and a three kilo “Fist of Adonis”. The message? People who need assistance have the same needs as everyone else and should not need to see their lives reduced to a mechanical, institutional process.nnDressed in the role of the particularly unsympathetic assistive technology company Secreta AB, GIL is aiming to properly shake up the visitors to this year’s Leva & Fungera assistive technology exhibition in Göteborg. With disability-friendly vibrators and a disturbingly superior attitude, they paint a clear, if satirical, image of what life can be like when you are dependent on others.nn“Sex is simply a tool for us to gain publicity. It could just as well have been about scheduled toilet visits or other abuse,” says GIL’s Anders Westgerd. “But sex combined with a visible disability is ridiculously taboo, and thus pure dynamite from a communicative perspective.”nnAnders Westgerd knows what he’s talking about. As head of operations at GIL, and its public face, he has won many awards for his work on highlighting the structural faults that make life difficult for people with disabilities. Or functional variations, as Anders prefers to call them.nn“Me being unable to walk is really comparable to someone else not being able to run 100 metres in less than ten seconds,” says Anders. “Whether someone has a disability or not is decided by where society places the norm, not the physical ability.”nnThe people who are upset by GIL’s sometimes challenging campaigns are almost always people who do not have a disability. Anders believes that this is a clear indication that the campaigns work as they are intended to.nn“I’m completely capable of speaking for myself if I am offended, but many people experience the fact that I’m in a wheelchair as if it gives them a green light to treat me as if I’m a child,” clarifies Westgerd. “In some way, otherwise intelligent people get hung up on the idea that disabled is the same as incapable. You marvel that something so simple, so overlooked, could be so satisfying.nnTo me, it's the most memorable dish on Dan's small menu, which says a lot coming from a restaurant with pizza in its name. And that's ok with Dan. While learning to make a better pizza, he got sucked into the rabbit hole of fermentation. Now, as you'll see, it's become his specialty. The intention was to contrast the sombre tone of the musical track with the funny, charming visuals of Amumu; he has a head that is far too large for his body and cloddish feet, which makes him a bit awkward. His lonely and emotional personality gave us a lot of scope to ply with when developing a storyline for this piece.nnIn terms of a visual style Riot were looking for something different to the typical 3D, action packed, realistically rendered short that is more typical for video games. Handiedan‘s artistic universe revolves around some leading visual motifs and yet it amazes thanks to its complexity, both in terms of formal composition and in terms of the technique she uses for making them. These two aspects together determine the irresistible charm of her art.nnwww.handiedan.comnwww.facebook.com/handiedannwww.instagram.com/handiedannwww.twitter.com/handiedannnUndisputed protagonists of Handiedan‘s sculptural hand-cut collages, her vintage pin-ups immediately recall the burlesque genre. However if we look into them further many sources of inspiration are revealed: the Neo-Classical and Victorian ages, the Parisian Belle Époque, up to the 1940’s and Post-War sexy imagery. But none of Handiedan‘s ‘models’ really existed. In fact each of them is composed through by assembling anatomical parts of different pre-existing images. The newly formed woman is the result of a complex layering process that gives to Handiedan‘s art a three-dimensional quality and makes a collaged bas-relief out of every work. Her cheerfully sexy creatures seem to lively bend in and out of their background.nnNotwithstanding the ‘less is more’ design theory so prevalent in Dutch culture, Handiedan‘s art responds more to a fascination with minute ornamental details. In each work the background is as much intriguing as the feminine creatures emerging from it. Filled with tiny exquisite details, the backgrounds incorporates old postage stamps, antique currencies, playing cards, music sheets and all sorts of odd antiques, even cigar bands. They are composed as to create elegantly decorative motifs and patterns.nnOnce Handiedan has gathered all the visual fragments and having in mind an atmosphere rather than a specific subject, she ‘plays’ with them on the computer. When the digital design satisfies her, she prints the elements that will form the layered collage on paper. She also uses old wood and even zinc as a canvas of the final image. Her beautifully complex work is completed by her own drawings and pen doodles marking both the background and the body parts of the pin-ups. Mounted into antique ornamented frames, the works are finally ready in all their exuberant liveliness.nnIf Handiedan‘s pin-ups look like something in between an orientally adorned femme fatale from a noir film, a sexually joyful pin-up from a 1950’s calendar and a tattooed rockabilly gal, each work also works as a treasure trove of symbols scattered on the background in form of decorative detail. For instance, her most recent work focuses on Cosmology, Easter Philosophy and Sacred Geometries.nnThough she has opted for a monochrome treatment, her new series confirms the complexity and depth coming from this form of layered collage, where everything is hand-cut and assembled with great care.
