This is a 10 minute excerpt from the NARM double-DVD, which highlights 32 African British male role models. You can grab a copy of the NARM DVD and companion booklet at BTWSC events. You can download the book from www.btwsc.com/NARM. For more information: email@example.comProduced by BTWSCnDirected by KwakunFilmed by Anslem & KwakunEdited by Anslem & Tianyi ChunDVD authoring & post-production by Trevor Hughesn© 2010 BTWSCnwww.btwsc.com/NARMnnPreface: the journey to NARMn nThe NARM (Naming And Role Model) project is funded by Heritage Lottery Fund, and delivered by Brent-based, pan-London voluntary organisation BTWSC. NARM highlights African British male role models from 1907 to 2007, in various fields of endeavour, including Academia, the Arts, Business, Civil Rights, Education, Faith, Law, the Police Service, Politics, Publishing, the Sciences, and the Community & Voluntary Sector. nnThe term African is used to describe all people of African descent, whether they come from the continent of Africa or its diaspora. And as NARM is a heritage project, the achievement of the role models has to go back at least ten years.nnThe project demonstrates that contrary to what is put out by the mainstream media, there are countless positive male role models in the community, and that we do not need to continually look outside Britain, to places like America for role models. nnBecause many of our so-called role models are presented from the usual fields of entertainment and sports, NARM focused on other fields to show that we achieve in various fields. nnIn addition to highlighting role models, NARM, in its small way, serves as a history primer, filling in some of the gaps left in mainstream British history. Indeed, the role models featured in the NARM photographic exhibitions have provided opportunities to tell some of the ‘other’ British histories.nnNARM’s genesis stems from BTWSC’s Because… Youth Crime project, which started in 2005 with a series of consultations and workshops. The outcomes and 15 recommendations were published and launched in 2006 at City Hall. nnIn 2007, BTWSC polled Londoners in order to whittle down the 15 Because… Youth Crime reduction recommendations to 4. The top 4 recommendations included support for parents/families, and highlighting positive male role models. BTWSC decided to address the former through Voice Of Responsible Parents (VORP), and the latter through the NARM project.nnAlthough BTWSC values the contribution of women, and indeed a number of the role models indicated that their mothers were their role models, NARM focuses on males because we wanted to correct the erroneous notion that there are not enough positive African male role models. BTWSC has somewhat redressed the gender balance, by nproducing the ‘What They Said I Should Be: The Story Of African British Female Movers & Shakers’ DVD.nnNotable Africans have been in this country for a very long time. For example, in the second century AD, there was Septimius Severus, the first 'African Roman' emperor. At the time, Britain was a Roman colony, and Septimius ruled from Britain. There was Olaudah Equiano, an enslaved African who bought his freedom, became a leading anti-enslavement activist, and in 1789 published ‘The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, or Gustavus Vassa, the African’, which became a best-seller. nnHowever, NARM looks at the period 1907 to 2007, and although the video highlights thirty-two contemporary people, the booklet highlights role models going back to the turn of the 20th century.nnWe’ve also included the ‘unknown role model’ who represents the thousands of unsung fathers, grandfathers, brothers, uncles, nephews and friends.nnThis project is not about celebrities, nor is it a power list. Although celebrities can be role models, that is not necessarily the case. The NARM role models had to have demonstrable community engagement. nnAt the start of the project, BTWSC asked for nominations from the community, had consultations, and also conducted research led by NARM consultant Kwaku with youth and adult volunteers. BTWSC worked withnBrent Archive, and also organised an open discussion on role models - one of the role models offered at that event was British Rail train guard Asquith Xavier, who is little known. His fight in the 1960s for justice within the workplace ought to be better known. This is another reason for having projects like NARM, as they broaden our knowledge of history, which is often rooted inncontemporary times.nnNominations were also made through the project microsite – www.btwsc.com/NARM - we hope to update and continue the dialogue through this microsite.nnAs there are countless notable men in the African community, it is impossible to acknowledge every person who has made a contribution. All the DVD and booklet can do is to demonstrate that there are numerous African male role models, highlight a few and invite readers to visit the microsit Less

ART AGAINST KNIVES works with at-risk young people living in areas of London affected by knife crime and designs creative opportunities to help them secure employment, education or training.nnAt Art Against Knives, it is important to us that we don't speak for the young people we support, but provide them with the opportunity to tell their own stories. This short film provides an insight into the work that we do to support young role models within their communities, the impact they have and how they support our work. nnThrough working directly with disadvantaged boroughs of London we support inspirational individuals striving to make long-term change in their communities. We provide resources, one-on-one mentoring and business support to help them to gain the funding and experience they need to be successful. nnBy supporting role models we are able to work in disengaged neighbourhoods and ensure that our work benefits those most in need. nnWe hope, like us, you are inspired...nn WWW.ARTAGAINSTKNIVES.COM Less

I got a chance to drag race a 691-hp Tesla Model S P85D against a Ferrari and a Lamborghini today, and this is what it felt like:nFirst impressions: The acceleration is ridiculous. I daily drive an Aventador, and I thought I got used to fast accelerations. But no, the Tesla Model S P85D hauled some serious ass. As a passenger, you do not get a chance to get ready for it at all. My internal organs were glued to the back of my body. I've done the P85+ test drive before, and it was already pretty fast. But this P85D is on a whole other level.nnWe pitted the car's acceleration against other cars. It pretty much beat everything at the car show (Ferraris and R8s didn't stand a chance). So I had to pit it against my Aventador, which does 0-60 in 2.8-2.9 seconds. Tesla P85D does it in 3.1-3.2 seconds. Right off the bat, the Tesla got ahead. It gets a good maybe half a car length ahead before the Aventador grips fully and starts hauling. So we decided to make it fairer and only accelerate the Tesla when the Aventador grips and starts moving. That's when we truly got both cars to start moving at roughly the same time.nnDrag Race Results (Note: This was completely casual and not in anyway in ideal, scientific conditions - the Aventador was not doing launch control): The Tesla pulled ahead in the beginning by about the hood length. But Tesla never got a chance to pull away. Instead, the Aventador kept up and was slowly cutting the difference between them with each gear shift. By the 50-60 mph, the Aventador caught up. By the 85 mph mark, the Aventador was half a car length ahead and the Tesla was only at 70-75 mph. So from around 0-60, the Aventador and Tesla P85D were pretty much neck and neck. But from 0-30 or so... the Tesla beat the Aventador. This gives you a general idea of how ridiculously fast the P85D is at the jump.nnMore observation: It feels different as a driver. Since I can anticipate the acceleration, I don't get the same scare/thrill that I get as a passenger. It's to a point where I actually enjoyed being a passenger rather than a driver. But after about a dozen of those 0-60 accelerations, I felt like I had to puke - probably the first time I felt this way in many years. It was a different feeling than what I got from an internal combustion engine car, because when you hear the engine roar, you can kind of anticipate the acceleration that comes after it. But since the Tesla is silent, there's no warning. I think I almost got a concussion from my head suddenly banging into the headrest because of how little anticipation the car gives you. At one point I was in mid-sentence when my driver floored it, and I had trouble getting the words out of my mouth. It really takes your breath away (literally). The acceleration is at the border between fun and frightening.nnNeedless to say, I'm having one delivered to me on Christmas. Less
