Greek singer Demis Roussos, one of music’s most unlikely international superstars, had died aged 68. Early hits like ‘Rain and Tears’ brought fame with bandmate Vangelis in the progressive rock group Aphrodite’s Child. Solo success followed in the 1970s and 1980s with songs like ‘Forever and Ever’. Some mocked his weight, his high-pitched voice and extravagant dress sense but, for fans, Demis Roussos had a magic formula. “Instinctively I sang songs that are from the Mediterranean area, love songs,” he said in 2002. “And it proved to be not only successful, but I was the first one to do it and it became like a fashion after that and many other artists did it as well. Julio Iglesias was one of them “. Roussos, who also made headlines for being caught up in a 1985 hostage drama and for losing a lot of his weight, died of an undisclosed illness in an Athens hospital. Less

The funeral of Egyptian born Greek singer Demis Roussos has been held in Athens. The 68-year-old died last weekend and has been mourned by fans across the world. He was famed for his voluminous kaftans and soaring voice and became a permanent fixture in the UK charts. He scored a number one single with “Forever and Ever” while his global album sales topped the 60 million mark. “His was a voice which awakened emotions in people and honoured Greece wherever it reached. We bid farewell to Demis,” said the singer Mariza Koch while composer Giorgos Hatzinasios added: “I can still hear his heartfelt laugh in my ears and I want to bid farewell to him with nostalgia and love.” The singer put his international success down to the advent of cheap air travel opening up Europe to regular holidaymakers. “My music came right on time. It was romantic Mediterranean music addressed to all the people who wanted to go on holiday,” he said. Less
