In mid October, Sydney Harbour Bridge was the subject of a security scare and investigation into an unmanned drone that crashed into the bridge, and ended up on the railway tracks. The train driver saw an unusual object, and thought someone had flown a bomb on to the tracks. Aussie: 10 years ago I would have called the train driver a paranoid idiot, but with all the fruitcakes and nutjobs around lately (particularly those in the name of their "God"), I don't blame him for being paranoid. Video 1 shows the shortened version (and I added some background tunes that I like), while Video 2 shows a longer clip as originally uploaded to the interwebs with more footage (if you are interested in 10 minutes of footage) of the unusual journey of the drone that caused the security scare. The footage has now surfaced, where the drone was launched by British man Edward Prescott. When the vehicle collided with a bridge girder and landed on the train line, it sparked an investigation by police and air safety authorities. The drone's camera was rolling the entire time it flew through and then into the Harbour Bridge, landed on a railway line, was picked up by Sydney Trains crew, placed in the train and taken back to their office and investigated. The drone (allegedly) went out of control because the camera mounting failed, but the drone tried to return to its starting point using GPS. After it crashes on to the rail line on the western side of the bridge a train is seen pulling up. The train driver picks up the quadrocopter and reports on his radio: "It's an odd looking plane, it's got a red light flashing, I don't know whether it's a bomb or not." Aussie: the odd thing here is that the thinks it is a bomb, yet carries it with him to the next station and hands it off ? WTF ? "That's a first... a model aeroplane that crashed on the bridge," he tells her. "It was in the road of the train so I jumped down and grabbed it." After a brief stay on a platform office desk, the drone is given to another Sydney Trains worker who takes it to another office. "It's got one camera lens. And it's flashing, like it's red now," the worker says, peering straight into the camera's lens. He's then seen taking photos of the drone while his curious colleagues look on. Mr Prescott, who was in Sydney as part of the support crew for US singer Rihanna's Australia tour, says he was testing new equipment on his drone when he lost control of it. He says he never intended for it to fly into the bridge. Thinking his drone was lost to the harbour, it was not until he read about a "mystery drone" in the news that he realised what had happened. "Imagine my surprise when the results of the internet search came back with a plethora of media sites from around the world carrying a story about a 'mystery drone', counter-terrorism investigation and a police hunt for the owner. "Needless to say I contacted the aviation authorities and Sydney police immediately," he says. A spokesman for NSW Police said the matter was investigated and deemed not suspicious. He said that the police team managing the International Fleet Review, which started the next day and which included counter terrorism officers, were notified but that it was handled by police transport command. Investigators say a kind of slow-down system on the Virgin Galactic spacecraft that crashed in the US appears to have been deployed too soon. The National Transportation Safety Board has highlighted a malfunctioning of what is known as the “feathering” system. But it says it is too soon to say that was to blame. Christopher Hart, the acting chairman of the US National Transportation Safety Board, said: “We have months and months of investigation to determine what the cause was. We’ll be looking at training issues. We’ll be looking at was there pressure to continue testing. We’ll be looking at safety culture. We’ll be looking at the design, the procedure.” And Richard Branson, founder of the space tourism company testing the craft, says it is too soon to talk about the future of the project. “It’s a massive setback,” he said. “It’s horrendous for the families of the test pilot but we’ve now got to pick ourselves up and I have now got to motivate the 400 engineers who have worked so hard on this programme for the last few years and find out what went wrong.” SpaceShipTwo crashed in California’s Mojave Desert during a test flight on Friday, killing one pilot and badly injuring another. Was able to get my hands on one of the first Canon Rebel T6i (750D), which for the most part is basically identical to the Canon Rebel T6s aside from a control wheel and a few very minor features. nnLong story short, I am LOVING this little camera, excellent optical and tracking focus (for face detection, not as well for non-facial features). Very good ISO performance, excellent buffer depth with JPEG images and most importantly, the image quality coming out of the camera is very, very good. Much better than what I am used to coming out of the T5i. nnThis is the first hands on review I have done in a couple years (5D3 was my last one), Ill get better at these. Armstrong was strapped into what was called the Lunar Landing Research Vehicle (later versions were called the Lunar Landing Training Vehicle), an ungainly rocket- and jet-powered craft designed as a simulator for the lunar module that would take astronauts to the surface of the moon. nArmstrong was about 30 feet above the ground when the LLRV's rockets failed. The craft lurched violently and began to lose altitude. Armstrong struggled to regain control before deciding it was a lost cause. He ejected from the LLRV moments before it crashed and exploded, as can be seen in this video.nDespite the incident, Armstrong praised the craft humorously dubbed the "flying bedstead," saying it did "an excellent job of factually capturing the handling characteristics of the lunar module in the landing maneuver." nIn fact, the simulator that nearly cost Armstrong his life may have saved his life and that of fellow Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin the day they touched down on the moon. YONKERS, N.Y. - The revelation that a New York City commuter train derailed while barreling around a sharp curve at nearly three times the speed limit is fueling questions about whether automated crash-avoidance technology could have prevented the carnage.nSafety officials have championed what's known as positive train control technology for decades, but the railroad industry has sought to postpone having to install it because of the high cost and technological issues.nInvestigators haven't yet determined whether the weekend wreck, which killed four people and injured more than 60 others, was the result of human error or mechanical trouble. But some safety experts said the tragedy might not have happened if Metro-North Railroad had the technology, and a lawmaker said the derailment underscored the need for it.n"This incident, if anything, heightens the importance of additional safety measures, like that one," said U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat from Connecticut, which also is served by Metro-North. "I'd be very loath to be more flexible or grant more time."nThe train was going 82 mph as it entered a 30 mph turn Sunday morning and ran off the track, National Transportation Safety Board member Earl Weener said Monday. He cited information extracted from the train's two data recorders; investigators also began interviewing the train's crew.nThe speed stunned officials - "I gulped," said U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y. Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the NTSB findings make it clear "extreme speed was a central cause" of the derailment and vowed to "make sure any responsible parties are held accountable" after investigators determine why the train was going so fast.n"At this point in time, we can't tell" whether the answer is faulty brakes or a human mistake, Weener said.nThe New York Police Department is conducting its own investigation with assistance from the Bronx district attorney's office in the event the derailment becomes a criminal case.nWeener sketched a scenario suggesting that the throttle was let up and the brakes were fully applied way too late to stave off the crash. He said the throttle went to idle six seconds before the derailed train came to a complete stop - "very late in the game" for a train going that fast - and the brakes were fully engaged five seconds before the train stopped.nIt takes about a quarter-mile to a half-mile to stop a train going 82 mph, according to Kevin Thompson, a Federal Railroad Administration spokesman.nInvestigators are not aware of any problems with the brakes during the nine stops the train made before the derailment, Weener said.nWeener would not disclose what investigators know about the engineer's version of events, and he said the results of drug and alcohol tests were not yet available. Investigators are also examining the engineer's cell phone; engineers are allowed to carry cellp hones but prohibited from using them during a train's run.nThe engineer, William Rockefeller, "is totally traumatized by everything that has happened," said Anthony Bottalico, executive director of the rail employees union.n"He's a sincere human being with an impeccable record that I know of. He's diligent and competent," Bottalico said. Rockefeller, 46, has been an engineer for about 11 years and a Metro-North employee for about 20, he said.nPositive train control, or PTC, is designed to forestall the human errors that cause about 40 percent of train accidents, and uses GPS, wireless radio and computers to monitor trains and stop them from colliding, derailing or going the wrong way. The transportation safety board has urged railroads to install PTC in some form since 1970, and after a 2005 head-on collision killed 25 people near Los Angeles, Congress in 2008 ordered rail lines to adopt the technology by December 2015.nMetro-North has taken steps toward acquiring it but, like many rail lines, has advocated for a few more years to implement a costly system that railroads say presents technological and other hurdles.nGrady Cothen, a former FRA safety official, said a PTC system would have prevented Sunday's crash if the brakes were working normally. And Steve Ditmeyer, a former FRA official who teaches at Michigan State University, said the technology would have monitored the brakes and would not have allowed the train to exceed the speed limit.n"A properly installed PTC system would have prevented this train from crashing," he said.
