During a press conference in the White House on Wednesday to announce a commission which will recommend measures to be taken to avoid future massacres like what happened in Newtown, President Barack Obama was cornered by ABC News' Chief White House Correspondent Jake Tapper regarding his newfound sense of urgency in addressing gun violence. "Where've you been," Tapper asked. "I've been President of the United States," Obama replied.nn"It seems to a lot of observers that you made the political calculation in 2008, in your first term, and in 2012 not to talk about gun violence," Tapper said. "This is not the first incidence of horrific gun violence of your four years. Where've you been?"nn"Here's where I've been, Jake. I've been President of the United States," Obama replied. He said he had to respond to the economic crisis, saving the automotive industry and ending two foreign wars. "I don't think I've been on vacation," he added. Less

CNN anchor Jake Tapper continued his prosecution of the Obama administration for not sending a high-level official to the Paris Unity Rally yesterday. He lit into former White House Press Secretary Jay Carney, now a CNN contributor, on Monday, asking what the administration was thinking in skipping the rally.nnCarney argued the security challenges of a president in an open rally would have distracted from the rally’s Franco-centric message.nn“I take your point on the president,” Tapper responded. “But Joe Biden, Bill Clinton, somebody else from the administration? Chuck Hagel?”nnRELATED: Zakaria on U.S.’s Absence from Paris Rally: Why God Invented Vice Presidentsnn“Certainly you’ll grant the point that there’s something wrong when this season’s The Good Wife had higher Obama representation, with a cameo from Valerie Jarrett, than this very important rally,” Tapper charged, “perhaps the most important rally in Europe in a generation.”nnCarney countered that if anyone but the president had been sent the critics would have howled anyway, and that the symbolism of attendance did nothing to deter the substance of the U.S.-France relationship. He added that outside of political commentators, people were a lot more concerned about the economy than optics.nn“There’s that pivot to the economy,” Tapper replied sarcastically. “I know it very well.” Less

Jake Tapper Battles Arkansas Pol Does Religious Freedom Bill Discriminate or Not? CNN’s Jake Tapper today grilled Bart Hester the sponsor of Arkansas’ religious freedom bill (currently on hold after the governor asked for clarified language) and asked him multiple times if it allows for discrimination or not. And Tapper expressed his confusion multiple times given all the conflicting messaging from supporters of the bill on the matter.nTapper vs. Arkansas State Senator: I'm Confused, How Can Refusing Service To Gays Not Be Discrimination?nState Senator Bart Hester insisted the bill is not about discrimination, but the First Amendment does give businesses the right not to do anything that conflicts with their strongly-held faith. For example, he said, “I wouldn’t ask a Jewish baker to put a Nazi swastika on a cake.”nnTapper still said he was confused and tried to nail down whether or not the bill discriminates or not. Hester said that “the First Amendment is not a confusion” and compared the unpopularity of refusing to serve gay people to burning the American flag (both frowned upon but okay under the First Amendment).nnSo, then, it discriminates? Well, again, no, because, as Hester told Tapper, he doesn’t believe it’s discrimination against individuals, but against a “message” they don’t agree with. Tapper asked if that means he would be fine with a Muslim baker refusing to provide services for any Christians or Jews.nnHester stood by the First Amendment argument.nnvideo footage caught on tape cellphone camera surveillance raw dash cam air live on tv share comment like most popular Less
