He is a two time T20 World Cup winning captain. He plays as a right-handed batsman and a fast-medium bowler. On making his One Day International (ODI) debut against Bangladesh in 2004, Sammy became the first person from the island of St. Lucia to play international cricket. Three years later he made his Test debut against England, taking 7/66 which were the best bowling figures for a West Indian in his first Test since Alf Valentine in 1950. Sammy was appointed West Indies captain in October 2010. He scored his maiden Test century in May 2012 during a match against England.nSammy is the only captain to have won World T20 twice. Track 5.nnIf "world music" was a marketing category devised in the '80s to help sell records, it became the domain of the bourgeoisie, much like the worldbeat—which added electronic music into the mix—that followed it. That's the legacy the Parisian duo of Guido Minisky and Hervé Carvalho, who operate as Acid Arab, have to contend with. As DJs, they've been hosting a party of the same name, which, in combination with a revelatory trip to Tunisia, led to two compilations on Versatile Records—the label of Gilb'R, the Tunisian DJ they visited the country with. Now they deliver Musique De France, Acid Arab's debut album, and a mission statement of sorts. nnUsing a moniker as fabulous as Acid Arab is automatically intriguing, and it raises certain expectations, which are more or less met by the music. There are driving electronic beats and Middle Eastern or North African-derived modal melodies and instrumentation—or at least synths intended to emulate such instrumentation, such as rhaita horns—looped on almost every track. The beats and basslines are rooted in an underground sensibility that prevents the record from veering into blandly tasteful music. nnThe Arabic elements help Musique De France feel special, presumably thanks to keyboardist Kenzi Bourras, who is also part of Algerian-French star Rachid Taha's band. Seven of the ten tracks also feature collaborations, some of which form brilliant combinations, such as Taha's evocative vocals in "Houria," Yemenite singer AWA's rousing call and response and quasi-yodeling in "Gul L'abi," and Omar Souleyman keyboardist Rizan Said's virtuosic playing on "Le Disco" and "A3ssifa." It's interesting to hear Cem Yildiz's droning saz and the multi-tracked vocals on "Stil," or Algerian Sofiane Saidi's plaintiveness on "La Hafla," even though those stylistic contrasts don't work as well. "Tamuzica," featuring Jawad El Garrouge, feels the most gently traditional and the least "acid" of them all. nnAs much as the desire for authenticity insists on tangible connections to the music, it also regularly translates into proof of a birthright. Minisky and Carvalho might argue that—thanks to imperialism, modern globalism and the resulting Arab community in Paris—that birthright also belongs to them. Given France's colonial history, hinted at in the collaborators they enlist to help with the tracks, they would have a point. But the real proof is in the music. You can hear the warmest affection for Acid Arab's inspirations, like a desire to spread the joy they get from such artistry, and they seem to get that same respect from their collaborators. This week on How to Drink I'm making a Knickerbocker, inspired by one of my favorite films of all time The Thin Man from 1934. As I mention in the episode The Thin Man is a really exceptional pre-code crime/mystery/comedy starring William Powell and Myrna Loy and it's adapted from a novel of the same name by Dashiell Hammett. When it came to making this movie Warner Brothers though Powell and Loy were bad choices for the film. Powell was already famous for portraying another film detective, Philo Vance, and wasn't known for his comedy chops. Loy was well recognized for her turn in a string of exotic femme fatale rolls and was seen as a bad fit for the movie. The director W.S. Van Dyke must have known something though, he made a strong case to the execs at the studio and got his way, and boy was he right. The movie was a massive success and led to an additional five sequels, sort of the Fast and Furious of it's day. The onscreen chemistry between Powell and Loy is so good that people thought they were real life husband and wife, they weren't of course.nnI'm a big fan of Hammett's novels and got myself a bit turned around on this one, since the Knickerbocker doesn't get drank in the film but does in the book, but that's ok because it's a perfectly appropriate drink for the movie and fantastic in it's own right. nnTraditionally this drink would have been served over the ice it was shaken with, but I see no reason it shouldn't be made a tad more elegant and served up in a Nick & Nora glass (which coincidentally is named for the protagonists of The Thin Man: Nick and Nora Charles). Also in the episode I mention that I'm using raspberry gum syrup, you don't need the gum, but use it if you got it. The raspberry is of course necessary. nnKnickerbockernn2.5 oz. / 75 ml. “Robot cops” will soon be patrolling the streets of Dubai. A prototype of the new android police officer was recently seen in the halls of the Gulf Information Technology Exhibition (GITEX), Dubai’s annual computer and electronics show. Equipped with a touchscreen which can be used to report a crime or process traffic violation fines, it can also salute and shake hands, and speaks English, French and Arabic. Its interactive screen and microphone are directly connected to the Dubai Police force. “It’s a robot that has been developed 100% in Europe, in Barcelona, and we are very happy that Dubai Police has chosen us as their platform among other platforms available in the world,” Carlos Vivas, Business Manager at Pal Robotics, told Euronews correspondent Rita Delprete. Visitors to the computer and electronics show could also bump into the security guard robot. Made in the United Arab Emirates, it live-streams events going on around it and sends the data back to the control center. It’s thought the robot could replace human security guards in residential areas in the near future. The Sa’adah robot also made its debut at the GITEX. Deployed at Dubai International Airport, it will greet travellers and scan their facial expressions through built-in sensors to measure their satisfaction with customs and visa services. Security was also the driving force behind a new car monitoring system presented at the show. Capable of analysing a driver’s face, it can see if she is tired for example: if the driver closes her eyes for more than 1.5 seconds, an alarm goes off. The system also controls the driver’s concentration if she is distracted. A similar system is being used on more than 50 Dubai buses and has resulted in a massive drop in driver distraction. The plan is for all of Dubai’s 1.500 buses to be equipped with the system by 2018. It’s all part of Dubai’s ambition to position itself as the leading smart city in the region, from transport to renewable energies. “Technology is not our end goal, it’s our enabler,” said Aisha Butti Bin Bishr, Director General of the Smart Dubai Office. “Our end goal is to make our people happier. But we are using technology, innovative technology, to serve people. Later on, you will see one of our applications where we’ve brought almost 27 government entities together on one platform – more than 55 services that can be performed in one place. With a single payment you can perform all government services and transactions.” Also on show was an hourly car rental service, and there are plans for a Smart Parking Project that would help motorists identify free parking spots. Finally, one of the stars of the show was the latest addition to the Dubai Police car fleet, a 160.000 euros McLaren 570S. It should feel at home alongside the fleet’s other luxury racing cars that include models by Bugatti, Lamborghini, and Ferrari. Less
