Hopes of finding survivors from a deadly landslide in Sri Lanka have been hit by heavy rainfall. More than 100 people are believed to have been killed in the tea-plantation village of Haldummulla, some 200 kilometres from the capital, Colombo. There is uncertainty over the number of victims as authorities say some population data was lost. Residents are now taking shelter in schools and temples as the search for survivors continues. President Mahinda Rajapaksa visited the area on Thursday and ordered police to investigate if there had been any negligence by government officials in identifying the risks and informing local people before the disaster. Pope Francis has arrived in Sri Lanka, where he will spend two days before flying on to one of the Catholic church’s strongholds, the Philippines. He is the first pope to visit the island since a 26-year-long civil war ended in 2009, and his mission is to help interfaith healing after the war’s bloody conclusion, which left the Hindu Tamils crushed and the Buddhist Sinhalese majority triumphant. “It is no easy task to overcome the bitter legacy of injustices, hostility and mistrust left by the conflict. It can only be done by overcoming evil with good,” he said on his arrival. Francis’s visit comes at a political turning point, with the president who won the war just turned out of office by a newly elected leader who says he is committed to setting up a truth commission, which his predecessor rejected. Francis appeared to echo that call on arrival. Around seven percent of the Sri Lankan population is Christian, and it has recently suffered at the hands of Buddhist extremists. Less

In the first visit papal visit to Sri Lanka in more than 20 years, Pope Francis has called on the country to do more to seek the truth about its years of civil war. The pontiff attended an inter-religious meeting in the capital of this Buddhist-majority country, which voted out its wartime leaders only days ago. A brutal war that lasted 26 years ended in 2009, when army defeated the Tamil Tiger rebels. ‘‘For too many years, the men and women of this country have been victims of civil strife and violence,” said Pope Francis. “For the sake of peace, religious beliefs must never be allowed to be abused in the cause of violence and war’‘. The visit comes only days after Sri Lankans unexpectedly elected a new president, Maithripala Sirisena. The Pope is on a six day tour of Asia, which will take him next to the Philippines. Less

Pope Francis celebrated an open air Mass for an estimated one million worshippers on day two of his trip to Sri Lanka. It’s the first time a pope has visited the country since the end of the war in 2009 that saw the army and rebels accused of atrocities. Francis’s message is one of religious tolerance. Catholics make up about seven percent of Sri Lanka’s population while 10 times as many follow Buddhism. Thirteen percent are Hindus and 10 percent are Muslims. Wednesday’s highlight came when he canonised the country’s first saint – the 17th-century missionary Joseph Vaz. It’s an example of Francis’s no-nonsense approach to creating saints in order to meet the needs of the flock for new holy figures. Some say Vaz does not qualify because the Church has not attributed two miracles to him. The Pope’s visit to Sri Lanka is part of a six-day tour of Asia. On day three he will travel to the Philippines. Less

Voting is underway in Sri Lanka’s general election which is being widely seen as a test of a comeback bid by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. After losing his job in a snap poll last January, Rajapksa is hoping to return to office as prime minister. Although not favourite to win , the 69 -year-old war hero who crushed a 26-year long Tamil uprising in 2009 might just slip back into power. He could do that together with his at his Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) if his rival fails to win a majority. However pundits say the incumbent Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and his United National Party (UNP) have the best chance of forming the largest bloc in the 225-seat parliament. Fifteen million people have the right to vote after what observers say has been an unusually clean campaign. Less

A Sri Lankan official has said she doesn’t think any survivors will be found under the debris of a deadly landslide in the central village of Haldummulla. Disaster Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera estimates around a hundred people were buried. Other estimates suggest up to 192 local residents are missing, and around 150 houses were destroyed. Soldiers and government officials conducting rescue operations say it is difficult to give a precise number as population data was lost in the three-kilometre-long landslip. Heavy rain has heightened the threat of further mudslides, hindering rescue efforts and prompting almost 500 locals to spend the night of the landslide (October 29) in a nearby school. Less

The march was on its way to the Sri Lankan parliament where they were stopped by a police barricade. Several protesters were injured during the demonstration as a result of the water cannon and scuffles with police. The Indian subcontinent, which includes not just India but also Pakistan and Bangladesh, is one of the most ancient places on earth.
