Sri Matangi StotraMantras or sacred mystic syllables when repeated often produce the results as prayed for. Invocations or prayers for repetition to different deities depending upon our wish and longing, were identified by our ancestors. One such prayer is directed towards Shyamala, a manifestation of Shakit. She is the prime counselor for the Parasakthi or the embodiment of Supreme energy. She represents the Buddhi Tatva and activates our mind. Shyamala Dhandakam by Maha Kavi Kalidasa sung by Bombay Sisters. Upload for Navarathri 2012. Happy Navarathri to everyone.n nKalidasa was perhaps the greatest of the Sanskrit poets. He has written great dramas like Shakunthalam and great epics like Kumara Sambhavam, Malavikagni mithram , the message poetry called Megha Sandesham etc. He is extremely famous for the use of appropriate similes and metaphors. Shyamala Dandakam is perhaps the greatest stotra written by him eulogizing the mother goddess --Shyamala.nnHe has employed a poetic style called Dandakam in writing this prayer. Dandakam is that poetry where some of the lines have more than 26 syllables. It very much resembles prose. In this case, the entire Dandakam is a single sentence from start to the end. I have attempted to retain the same style.nnThere is a folk story about how he came about to write this stotra. He was a foolish wood cutter. The courtiers of a proud princess made him act as a wise man and made the princess marry him. The princess advised the wood cutter to enter in to a temple of kali, when she goes out for a walk and lock himself in. When Kali came back, the wood cutter refused to allow her in , unless she makes him wise. She did that. Shyamala Dandakam is supposed to be the first prayer of this wood cutter to Kali after he became wise.n nManikhya veenaam upalalayanthim,nMadalasam manjula vaag vilasam,nMahendra Neela dhyuthi komalangim,nMathanga kanyam manasa smarami. 1n nI meditate on the daughter of Matanga,nWho plays the veena made of precious gems,nWho has become lazy due to her exuberance,nWho is blessed with very sweet words,nWho has a pretty mien which shines like the blue gem.nnread the rest of Lyrics and meaning here: http://stotraratna.sathyasaibababrotherhood.org/g16.htmn(thanks to Shri P.R.Ramachander) Less

Matangi is the aspect of Devi (in other words, the Mahavidya) who is the patron of inner thought and speech. She guides her devotee to the incaused primordial sound. Matangi has three eyes and either a dark emerald or dark blue complexion. The Goddess Meenakshi at Madurai is worshipped as Mathangi. Matangi is considered the daughter of Rishi Matanga. She emerges as an aspect of Sati, spouse of Siva and the daughter of Daksa, in the mythic cylcle known as the Daksayajna. Siva attempts to prevent Sati from attending a sacrifice (yajna) Her father is conducting and to which neither He or She was invited. Daksa was forced to accept Her marriage to Siva but later rejected Siva and the marriage. Enraged by Siva's interference, She first shows Herself as Kali and then manifests nine other forms. Traditionally appearing in the cycle after Bhagalamukhi, Matangi is associated with the full moon, the 'night of intoxication'. She is depicted as dark (blue-black or dark emerald), very beautiful, sensuous with very large breasts, slender waist and long, flowing hair. She holds a goad, a noose, a sword and a sarod. These items may vary somewhat in different traditions. She grants control over all forms of speech, especially poetry, and music. Therefore, She is associated with the throat chakra. As the daughter of the the Rishi Matanga (lit. 'elephant') She is associated with vast and expansive knowledge. She is further closely associated with Sarasvati. Matangi is said to be born as a ...
